  • 2723.Skateboarding,a form of entertainment and sport, popular among youths,in which a person rides standing balanced on a small board mounted on wheels.Considered one of the so-called extreme sports, skateboarding as a professional sport boasts a range of competitions, including vertical(垂直的) and street-style events.
The first commercial skateboards appeared in 1959,but crude homemade versions of skateboards, often consisting of nothing more than old roller-skate wheels attached to a board, were first built after the turn of the 20th century. In the early 1960s,skateboard manufacturers such as Makaha and Hobie attempted to
capitalize on the rising popularity of surfing by promoting skateboarding, then known as"sidewalk surfing".In 1963 Makaha formed the first professional skateboard team, and that same year the first skateboard competition was held in Hermosa,California. The initial popularity of skateboarding waned over the next couple of years because of the limitations of the skateboard's operability and because of warnings from safety professionals that the activity was dangerous.
Skateboards were revived in the mid-1970s after the development of the faster and more maneuverable polyurethane wheel. The craze spread worldwide, and skateboard magazines helped promote both the sport and young innovative riders such as Tony Alva and Stacey Peralta. The first skate park was built in Florida in 1976,and many others began to appear throughout North and South America,Europe, and Asia, all providing a variety of slopes and banked surfaces for sudden turns and stunts.
In the 1980s,skateboarders built their own ramps(坡道) and half-pipes and began skating the urban environments, creating what became known as the street style. It was during this time that a distinctive youth subculture(亞文化群)began to develop around the sport.Skateboarding has established itself as a professional sport while still maintaining its independence from traditional team sports.

  • 2724.Summary writing.
Effects is a famous poem by Alan Jenkins which explores the idea of loss, and the lasting impact it can have on an individual both physically and emotionally. It stands out with the active use of poetic techniques.
Repetition plays an important role in adding extra emphasis to negativity(消極性).For example,"drink after drink"and"night after night".This is a very effective use of repetition because some readers are likely to feel a sense of hopelessness or disappointment, particularly as both"night" and"drink"can have negative meanings. As such, readers are likely to have a much more emotional connection with the poem, making them remember it longer.
Similarly, adjectives and verbs have significant effects. The added description such as"cheap cut"or"faded snapshots"not only adds subtle extensions of understanding due to daily objects, but it also improves the ability of a reader to accurately imagine and picture the situation;in particular with these two examples indicating that the family was not well off, evoking readers' empathy.
Also, the first person description throughout the poem is used to build a more personal connection. Some readers may not see this as initially important, but when it is considered how different the tone of the poem would be and the corresponding reader response if it was written in the third person,it can be realized how important it is.It also makes the poem much more personal because a reader is able to apply the sense of loss to a specific individual, rather than a more abstract group or entity.

  • 2730."Hope has proved a powerful predictor of outcome in every study we've done so far," said Dr.Snyder,a psychologist.
In research with 3,920 college students,Dr.Snyder found that the level of hope among freshmen at the beginning of their first term was a more accurate predictor of their college grades than were their S.A.T.jye.ai or their grade point averages in high school. "Students with high hope set themselves higher goals and know how to work to attain them," Dr.Snyder said. "When you compare students with equal learning ability and past school achievements, what sets them apart is hope."
In seeking a way to assess hope scientifically,Dr.Snyder went beyond the usual belief that hope is merely the sense that everything will turn out all right. "This idea is not concrete enough;it fails to clarify two key components of hope," Dr.Snyder said.
"Having hope means believing you have both the will and the way to accomplish your goals, whatever they may be."
Despite the wisdom in the old saying "where there's a will there's a way," Dr.Snyder has found that the two are not necessarily connected. In a study of people from 18 to 70 years old,Dr.Snyder discovered:only about 40% of people are hopeful in the technical sense of believing they typically have the energy and means to accomplish their goals;about 20% of the people believed in their ability to find the means to attain their goals, but said they had little will to do so;another 20% have the opposite pattern, saying they had the energy to motivate themselves but little confidence that they would find the means;the rest had little hope at all, reporting that they typically had neither the will nor the way.
"It's not enough just to have the wish for something," said Dr.Snyder. "You need the means, too. On the other hand, all the skills to solve a problem won't help without the willpower to do it."

(1)What does Dr.Snyder think can best predict a freshman's academic performance?

    A.His S.A.T.jye.ai.
    B.His high school grades.
    C.His level of hope.
    D.His family background.
(2)The underlined word "concrete" in the third paragraph probably means
    .
    A.clear
    B.pure
    C.universal
    D.popular
(3)What did Dr.Synder say about the old saying "where there's will there's a way"?

    A.It is quite realistic.
B.It is not inspiring to students.
    C.It is totally wrong.
D.It is not always true in reality.
(4)What can be the most suitable title for the passage?

    A.No pains,no gains.
B.Hope emerges as key to success.
    C.Will gets it going.
    D.Where there's a will there's a way.
