With her eyes always feeling tired as she prepared for an exam,16-year-old Sun Run went to the hospital with her parents in January. She was surprised when she found out that her eyesight dropped from 5.0 to 4.6. "A few of my friends have had the same experience these days" Sun said.In fact, poor eyesight among Chinese primary and high school students went up from 59.2 percent to 70.6 percent in 2020,according to the Ministry of Education.
By 2050,half of the people in the world (nearly 5 billion)will be nearsighted(近視),according to a study come out in the magazine Ophthalmology. The main reason for this is that people's lifestyles have changed. They spend less time outdoors and more time looking at screen.
To protect students' eyesight, the Chinese government has worked out new requirements(要求) for school things that will come into use on March 1,2022.For example, according to the requirements, the size of text in students' textbooks should be at least nine-point(小五號).Teachers should also stop using projectors(投影儀) or television that are too bright.
There are also requirements for desk and classroom lights. For example these lights should give off as little blue light as possible.Blue light is bad for our eyes,as it can kill the photoreceptor cells(感光細(xì)胞)we need, according to Harvard Medical School. Many of the screens we use every day, like our phones and computer screens, give off blue light. What's more,in May 2020,the National Health Commission also required schools to make sure that students should have at least two hours of outdoor activities a day.
Although the government made rules to protect our eyesight, the key point is the students themselves.Good habits might keep eyesight from getting worse. He Jiajing 16,of Guangdong, has good eyesight. She does eye exercises every day, plays on her computer just one hour a week and watches TV from a distance."I take a short break after reading for an hour," said He.
