Easter Island,an island in the south Pacific Ocean, belongs to Chile. The island is famous for its stone statues (雕像) along the coastlines.
In 1722,an explorer named Jacob Roggeveen visited the island. This happened to be on Easter Sunday, and this gave the island its name:Easter Island. What he discovered there were three types of people, darkskinned, redskinned, and very paleskinned people with red hair. The island had a small population with almost no culture they could remember. They hardly had any contact with the outside world.
Most scientists believe that the Polynesians were the first people of Easter Island.Another guess is that the first people came from South America, for the sweet potato,a main diet of the early Easter Island people, was from South America. It shows that there must have been some connection between the two cultures.Erich Daniken,a famous writer, believes that aliens once lived on the island.
The most famous sight on Easter Island is the 887 huge stone statues called Moai. Most of the statues are 5.5 to 7 meters tall and very few are shorter than 3 meters. The average (平均的) weight is 14 tons. Some Moai weigh more than 80 tons.Every one of them is made of one single piece of huge stone.Although all the Moai are large with heads and shortened bodies,no two exactly resemble(相像) each other.Besides, since the land had been treeless by the time the Europeans first visited, how the statues were moved is still a mystery.
It is believed that the statues were used to represent ancestors whom the island people regarded as gods. They were placed as a warning to keep enemies out and watch over other tribes (部落).
