A village primary school in Xuzhou,Jiangsu Province has zero cases of nearsightedness(近視)and overweight for eight years through rope skipping(跳繩).
Qilu Primary School,23 kilometers away from the town,is home to 210 students, including 130 left-behind children and 15 teachers. Most of the teachers are over 50.
"In countryside areas, many parents don't realize the need for children and many grandparents look after left-behind children,so students developed some bad habits, including the overuse of mobile phones and electronic products(電子產(chǎn)品).They spend lots of time playing video games instead of learning courses on the mobile phones.Sometimes it took them much time to have long conversations with friends they made on the Internet," said the school headmaster Liu En.
"Before the school began rope-skipping lessons, some third or fourth-graders had nearsightedness.Others showed low interest in studying and weak sense of working together," said the headmaster.Besides meeting the students' needs, the school was also short of sports resources(資源).So Liu finally decided the rope skipping was the best choice.
To get them more interested in the activity,Liu Yan,who is the teacher of the rope skipping lessons, allowed students to come up with their own playing ways. She also decided to name a new rope skipping move after the student who invented it.In order to further improve students' interest in the activity,Liu Yan allowed students to practice rope skipping as often as possible after class. So far, more than 30 kinds of basic rope skipping ways as well as more than 200 new moves have been accepted by the school.
"I thank the teachers for bringing us rope skipping, which provides me with not only sports skills, but also makes me away from video games and get confidence in life," said Xiao Ya,a left-behind girl at school.
