       Gabriela Mistral was once an ordinary teacher in a small village school in North Chile．She was born to a poor family in 1889 and began teaching when she was only fifteen．But she was a good teacher．She helped her students to know the world．
     For eighteen years，Gabriela tried her best to help improve the living and studying conditions of the poor farm children in North Chile．During part of this time，she was director of schools in all of Chile．Before long，many countries got to regard her as a great friend of children and a leader in education．
     In 1922，she was invited to Mexico to help organize the school system in the countryside．Two years later，she came to the United States where she served as a visiting professor in several colleges．In the same year，a group of teachers helped her to publish her first book of poetry in New York City．Some of her books had been translated into six different languages，and she gave the income from some of her books to help poor children．
     In 1945，she made her name known to all by winning the Nobel Prize in Literature，the first South American to win the prize．
