In recognition of Yuan's contributions to the country，the Chinese government awarded him the State Supreme Science and Technology Prize，or the Chinese Nobel Prize，in 2000.
Yuan's hybrid rice was not only a miracle（奇跡）that transformed famine（饑荒）into feast，but "was one of the biggest agricultural success stories that helped power the Chinese economic takeoff"，Zhai Huqu told Beijing Review.
Yuan's hybrid rice has been helping to solve food problems around the world.The late US economist Don Paarlberg said that Yuan's achievement is a victory against the threat of famine and his work is leading humanity to a world with ample food.
Yuan has shared his knowledge and techniques with foreign scientists and helped promote planting hybrid rice in more than 30 countries and regions around the world.So can he communicate with foreigners？As it turns out，the scientist speaks fluent English.
In 2017，he gave a 20-minute English speech at the 9th Shandong High-Level Talents Forum in Qingdao.At the beginning，he humbly said， "I speak broken English." However，his speech turned out to be a huge success with barely any pauses or mistakes.It inspired many to a greater effort into their English studies.
It was not the first time that Yuan had shown his excellent English skills.Back at the 1979 International Rice Research Conference，the scientist fluently answered questions about his hybrid rice research in English and was praised by participants for his language skills.

For many years there's been a debate about rewarding our children.Does it work？
Some people think parents should establish a standard with kids and give them something for meeting this standard as a reward.Punishment is given out in much the same way，but it's used when certain standards of performance or behaviour have not been met.Kids will often become more dutiful when threatened with punishment，and work harder when promised a valuable reward.The problem is what happens when parents aren't around.
To develop responsible，self-disciplined（自律的）kids，parents need to promote certain ideas.One of these ideas is that everyone pitches in and helps in the family，even if someone is not crazy about helping.Another idea is that there can be enjoyment in doing any task.When a task is for a worthy cause（our family can enjoy the house more because I helped clean it），and when parents are cheerful about their kids' chores，this message can have a big impact.
This is how parents help kids develop a sense of responsibility.When children develop this responsibility，they'll be more disciplined，and they'll control their emotions better.When parents give rewards to kids，they reduce the sense of responsibility.They also create children who may temporarily perform to a certain standard，but who aren't likely to continue the performance without the carrot hanging in front of them.
