Born in London in 1912,Alan Turing was the son of a civil servant(公務(wù)員) in British India.Throughout his childhood, the young boy was fascinated with the idea that the human body is a "complex machine",an idea he got from a gift book. "The rest of Alan Turing's life",as American scientist Vint Cerf, one of the founding fathers of the Internet, put it, "was about collecting small facts and ideas about human and non- human machines, then putting them together in very original ways".After four years of studying mathematics at the University of Cambridge,Turing graduated in 1935 and stayed there as a teacher.
At that time, his interest in the human mind led him to draw a machine. He described it as a typewriter-like device. It could read instructions that were placed in code on a special tape and finish whatever it was told to do.This is quite similar to the bits and bytes(位與字節(jié)) of the modern computer application and the machine that runs them.In 1937,Turing wrote a report about his machine. However, few people understood what he was talking about. But the report turned a new page in Turing's life. His talent for machines shone during World War II.After joining the secret service,Turing's design of an early computer-like machine helped the British government break the Nazis' codes at high speed and saved millions of lives.
Clearly a man ahead of his time,Turing never stopped thinking and writjye.aig.In 1950,he developed a test to find out if machines could actually think. "A computer would deserve to be called intelligent if it could fool a human into believing that it was human," Turing wrote in 1950 about his now- famous Turing Test.Just as Turing saw a rosy future for what was now becoming known as the computer, other parts of his life went terribly wrjye.aig.On June 7,1954,he killed himself.
Today, the highest award for contributions to computer science is honoured after Turing. As computers continue to evolve (發(fā)展),challenge and excite, people can't help wondering what new ideas he would challenge us to think about had he lived into the 2 lst century.
Read the passage and fill in the blanks with one word in each blank. In his childhood,Alan Turing was(1) In his (3) In his late(13) During World War II,having(8)
