2821.If you think Canada is a cold place, then Montreal is the exception. The French-Canadian city is as warm as it gets in all four seasons. This city island offers an unlikely mix of European charm and North American energy.
Montreal is the second most populous city in Canada and the principal city of the province of Quebec. The city of Montreal occupies about three-fourths of Montreal Island, the largest of the 234 islands of the Hochelaga Archipelago.Montreal's location on the St.Lawrence River proved to be a major advantage in its development as a transportation, manufacturing, and financial centre. From the time of the confederation of Canada (1867),Montreal was the largest urban centre in the country until it was surpassed by Toronto in the 1970s.
Actually,Montreal is a city with considerable French colonial history dating back to the 16th century.Montreal's beginning was as a missionary centre, named Ville-Marie by its founder,Paul de Chomedey,in May 1642.He built dwelling houses,a chapel,a hospital, and other structures, protecting the settlement against Indian attack with a stockade. It began as a missionary settlement but soon became a fur-trading centre,a role that was enhanced after the conquest of New France by the British in 1763.And its importance as a furtrade centre soon surpassed that of Quebec City.
French Canadians are the majority population in Montreal, which is often said to be the second largest French-speaking city in the world, though the accuracy of that statement is sometimes questioned. The city has been a destination for many immigrants and is widely considered to be one of North America's most cosmopolitan cities.
Montreal remains a city of great charm, vivacity, and one of unquestioned modernity. As the 21st century unfolded,Montreal remained a growing, dynamic city with a diverse economy and a cultural life that was as rich as its history.

Our house was directly across the street from the clinic (門診) entrance of Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. We lived downstairs (樓下) and rented the upstairs rooms to patients at the clinic.
One summer evening as I was preparing dinner, there was a knock at the door.I opened it to see a truly awful looking man. "He is hardly taller than my eight-year-old S on."I thought as I stared a t his stooped (彎曲的) body. But the shocking thing was that his face was unbalanced from swelling.Yet his voice was pleasant a s he said, "I've ( come to see if you have a room for just one night.I came for treatment this morning from the eastern shore, and there's no b us till morning."
He told me he'd been hunting for a room since jye.aion.No one seemed to have a room. "I guess it's my face ...I know it looks terrible, but my doctor says with a few more treatments ..."
For a moment I didn't know how to do,but his next words convinced me. "I could sleep in this chair on the porch(門廊) .My bus leaves early in the morning."It old him we would find him a bed,but he couldn't sleep on the porch.I went inside and finished getting dinner ready.I asked the man if he would join us. "No,thank you.I have plenty."And he hold up a brown paper bag.
When I finished the dishes,I went out to talk with him.It didn't take long to see that this poor man had an oversized heart crowded into that tiny body.He told me he fished for a living to support his five children, and his wife, who was hopelessly disabled from a back injury.
He didn't tell it by way of complaint. He was grateful that no pain accompanied his illness, which was clearly a form of skin cancer.
Paragraph 1:At bedtime,we put a camp bed in the children's room for him.
__________
Paragraph 2:On his next trip,as a gift,he brought us a big fish .
__________發(fā)布:2024/5/23 20:38:36組卷:4難度:0.52825.A British friend told me he couldn't understand why Chinese people love eating sunflower seeds(嗑瓜子)so much. "I've met a lot of older Chinese and many have a crack in their front teeth;I believe that's from cracking the seeds," he said.
I had never noticed the habit, but once he mentioned it,I suddenly became more aware.I realized that whenever I'm watching TV or typing a report,I always start mindlessly cracking sunflower seeds. My friend doesn't like sunflower seeds, and,to him,it seems unnecessary to work so hard just to get one small seed.
When we were young, the whole family would usually get together for Chinese New Year. Then,we all lived close to one another, usually in a small city, and sometimes even neighbors would go door-to-door on Chinese New Year's Eve to check out what every household was making.
I remember my parents would be in the kitchen cookjye.aig.In the living room,a large table would already be laid out, complete with a fancy tablecloth,ready-made dumpling fillings, and dishes full of candy, fruits and sunflower seeds.
Some of the dishes were to be offered to our ancestors later, while others were for neighbors and children to eat before the evening feast.I must have learned how to crack sunflower seeds back then.
I don't think it's right to criticize one's choice in food or eating habits,no matter how strange they may seem.
It's not only in China. When I went abroad,I found people had all sorts of strange habits when it came to food.In Denmark, they put salted red fish on bread and eat it for dinner,no matter how much it ruins their breath. They think it's a delicacy, and it's connected with their culture.I think it's a wonderful tradition.
