Actually，Montreal is a city with considerable French colonial history dating back to the 16th century.Montreal's beginning was as a missionary centre，named Ville-Marie by its founder，Paul de Chomedey，in May 1642.He built dwelling houses，a chapel，a hospital，and other structures，protecting the settlement against Indian attack with a stockade.It began as a missionary settlement but soon became a fur-trading centre，a role that was enhanced after the conquest of New France by the British in 1763.And its importance as a furtrade centre soon surpassed that of Quebec City.
