2271．While many countries are trying hard to deal with the increasing rates of childhood obesity，Japan stands out.The country has both high scores for nutrition and very low obesity rates.What's the country's secret？Some say it's school lunches.
According to an Oct.22 report from the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund（UNICEF），Japan tops the charts for childhood health indicators（指數(shù)），with low rates of infant mortality（嬰兒死亡率） and few underweight children.It also has the lowest rate of childhood obesity among the 36 member countries of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development（OECD）.
According to the report，there are various factors at work，including a health-conscious society and regularly mandated（強(qiáng)制的） health check-ups.However，a nationwide school lunch program also plays a key role.
In schools，the lunches are mandatory（強(qiáng)制性的）—no packed lunches are allowed—and while they are not free for most，they are heavily subsidized，making them affordable.
Each meal is designed to have around 600—700 calories，balanced between carbohydrates（碳水化合物），proteins and vegetables.A typical meal served to children in Japan's Gunma prefecture（縣） gives a good example：rice with grilled fish and spinach（菠菜），served with soup with pork，alongside milk and prunes（西梅干）.
