  • 1072.Peter,a 5-year-old boy, showed such great interest in sea shells that he would rush to pick them up with his 3-year-old sister,Shirley. They screamed out their joy as Peter collected his treasure into his pockets. For Peter, sea shells lay shinning on the peaceful beach, waiting for him, just like stars twinkling (閃爍) in the sky.As waves touched them, they seemed to be flowers blooming (綻放)in gentle wind.
One day,Peter was wandering through market with Shirley, with some shells in his pocket.Suddenly Peter found his younger sister was lagging(落后)behind. He stopped and looked back, finding Shirley was standing in front of a toy shop and was staring at something with great interest.
The boy went back to her and asked,"What do you want?" Shirley pointed at the doll, wearing a smile on her innocent face.Peter held his younger sister's tiny hand, walking into the shop.He tiptoed(踮起腳尖)to reach for the doll, and like a responsible elder brother, gave the precious doll to Shirley.Holding tightly the doll, the sister was very very happy.
The shopkeeper was watching everything and getting amused to see the matured(成熟的)behavior of the boy.Now the boy came to the counter and asked the shopkeeper,"How much does this doll cost,Sir?"
The shopkeeper was a cool man,who had suffered from something in his life.So he asked the boy with love and affection,"Well, what can you pay?" Peter reached into his clothes for money that was intended for these two little guys' breakfast.Having counted the money,Peter put it carefully on the counter, asking again, "Sir,is it enough for my little sister's doll?"
The amusing scene just in front of the shopkeeper eventually brought a smile on his face.Shaking his head slightly,he replied,"My boy,I am afraid it seems not to be enough."

  • 1073.By now,we are all aware that social media has had a powerful influence on our culture,in business,on the world at large.Social media websites revolutionized the way people communicate and socialize on the Web.However, besides seeing your friends' new baby on Facebook,or reading about Justin Bieber's latest conflict with the law on Twitter, what are some of the real influences?
Social networks offer the opportunity for people to reconnect with their old friends and acquaintances, make new friends, share ideas and pictures, and many other activities.Users can keep pace with the latest global and local developments, and take part in campaigns and activities of their choice.Professionals use social media sites like LinkedIn to improve their career and business development.Students can work together with their peers to improve their academic and communication skills.
Unfortunately, there are a few downsides too to social networking. If you are not careful, immoral people can target you for cyber bullying(網(wǎng)絡欺凌) and disturbance on social sites.School children, young girls, and women can fall victim to online attacks which can create tension and suffering. If you are a victim of cyber bullying,do not take it lying down, but try to take appropriate legal action against the attacker.
Many companies have blocked social networks as addicted employees can distract (分心)themselves on such sites, instead of focusing on work.In fact, studies show that British companies have lost billions of dollars per year in productivity because of social media addiction among employees.
Also, what you carelessly post on the Net can come back to trouble you.Leaking personal information on social sites can make users easily harmed to crimes like identity theft, stalking(尾隨犯罪),etc. Many companies perform a background check on the Web before hiring an employee. If a potential employee has posted something embarrassing on social media,it can greatly affect their chances of getting the job.The same holds true for our relationships too,as our loved ones and friends may get to know if we post something undesirable on social networks.
Social media has its advantages and drawbacks as each coin has two sides. It is up to each user to use social sites wisely to improve their professional and social life, and exercise caution to ensure they do not fall victim to online dangers.

  • 1076.閱讀下面材料,根據(jù)其內(nèi)容和所給段落開頭語續(xù)寫兩段,使之構(gòu)成一篇完整的短文。
Sock-eater ants are made-up animals with the best intention ever.
"Ow!Ow!" I shouted as I broke my jump rope rhythm and trapped my feet in the loose rope. "Something in my shoe is biting me," I screamed. My teacher,Miss Bell, heard me and hurried over. "Which foot is it?" she asked.I stuck up my right foot as she bent over to inspect it.Just then, feeling a new sting,I yelped in pain. "Here.Let's take off your shoe." Instructed Miss Bell, squatting down to get the shoe.
Then,I remembered the holes in my socks.Welfare socks didn't last long.Holes in socks were common for our family in the years following the Great Depression.Socks with holes in the heels often got pulled down so the hole wouldn't show.Where there was a hole, there would soon be a blister.Every week as she washed our clothes,Mama would say, "Even if we're poor and our clothes are worn out,we can still be clean."
I refused to let Miss Bell take off my shoe.I could not bear for her and the others on the playground to see the hole in my faded red sock. "Come on,then.Let's go inside to the office." I did my best to hold back my tears.Yet,each time the thing in my shoe stung me,I would let out aloud, "Oh,oh,oh!" Tears raced down my twisted face.
Miss Bell lifted me onto the desk and tried again. "Let me take a look."She just about had the shoe off when I saw the hole.I grabbed the shoe and pulled on and held it.The stinging worsened the tighter I grabbed the shoe.Miss Womble, the fifth-grade teacher, came into the office. "Can I help?I know her.She lives next door to me." "I guess ants are stinging her right foot, but she won't let me take off her shoe," said Miss Bell.

  • 1080.Recently,I was talking with a friend of mine about a mutual(共同的)friend of ours. "I wish I could be like Jenny. She always seems so happy.I'm not joking;I honestly think she has the perfect life," said my friend.
If you were to look at the Instagram account of Jenny, you would indeed see what looks like the perfect life. However, despite the enviable content of her Instagram,I learned through a conversation with this girl that it was all carefully handled.Everything was put together to maintain the public image that she was a happy-go-lucky and carefree girl. When she was sad or upset, there was no indication of these emotions on her Instagram.
In fact,we all choose our online media presence.Look through your Instagram- I bet that you don't post pictures where you don't feel camera-ready.On Instagram,we always show our "good side".Think about it.Would you rather post "I tried so hard but I ended up failing my test" or " I treated myself to a hot coffee after studying hard all week"?
We all want to present the best parts of our lives,to show what's going well and what we're proud of.We take photos of the nice things we own,or of any sorts of events considered "special",such as invite-only or formal parties. We post photos of the good times rather than the bad times. No matter what happens,we try to make our online image perfect.
There's absolutely nothing wrong with making your online presence perfect- everyone does it in some way or another. However, when it comes to feeling envious of someone else's Instagram posts, remember that just like you, they're showing their good side.

    (1)What's Jenny's life like indeed?

    A.She lives a perfect life.
B.Her life is full of sadness.
C.Her life is boring and meaningless.
D.She lives an ordinary life just like others.
(2)What does the author consider common?

A.That people dream of living a perfect life.
B.That people hide their bad side online.
C.That people love reading posts online.
D.That people want to please others online.
(3)Which of the following statements would the author agree with?

A.We shouldn't perfect our online image.
B.We should always show our good side.
C.We should stop reading online stories.
D.We don't need to envy others' online presence.
(4)Where is the text most probably taken from?

    A.A professor's speech.
    B.A survey of people's life.
    C.A personal online account.
    D.An entertainment magazine.
