  • 462.Four tobacco plant seeds found in an ancient Utah fireplace suggest early Americans might have been using the plant 12,300 years ago.The finding makes the first known use of tobacco some 9,000 years earlier than previously thought.Researchers believe hunter-gather-ers in the Great Salt Lake Desert may have smoked wads of the plant.Until now,the earliest evidence of tobacco use was a 3,300-year-old smoking pipe discovered in Alabama.
Scientists discovered the millimetre-wide seeds at the Wishbone site,an ancient camp in the desert in what is now northern Utah. There, they found the rest of an ancient hearth(壁爐地面)that was surrounded by bone and stone artefacts(手工藝品).
Their findings suggest the native American hunter-gatherers may have consumed the tobacco while cooking or toolmaking, the scientists say in a paper published in the journal Nature Human Behaviour.
The tobacco plant is native to the Americas and contains the psychoactive addictive substance nicotine(尼古?。?Tobacco was widely cultivated and spread around the world following the arrival of Europeans in the Americas at the end of the 15th century.
"The tobacco seeds were the big surprise. They are incredibly small and rare to be preserved," said Daron Duke,a researcher of the Far Western Anthropological Research Group. "Today, the Great Salt Lake Desert is a large dry lake. But 12,300 years ago,the camp would have been on a vast marshland. We know very little about their culture. The thing that interests me most about this find is the social window it gives to a simple activity in an undocumented past.My imagination runs wild."

(1)What does the finding suggest in paragraph 1?

    A.Americans prefer using smoking pipes.
B.Tobacco plants can easily be found around America.
C.Tobacco plants were introduced into America 9,000 years ago.
D.Americans have a longer history of tobacco use than we thought.
(2)What did scientists find at the ancient camp?

    A.Some animal meat.
    B.A rich farming land.
    C.Small tobacco seeds.
    D.A modern hunting tool.
(3)What can we learn from paragraph 4?

A.Europeans contributed to the spread of tobacco.
B.Americans started learning to smoke in the 1500s
C.Tobacco was first planted in America by Europeans.
D.People extremely cared about the effects of smoking.
(4)What did Daron Duke think of the discovery of tobacco seeds?

    A.Amazing.
    B.Threatening.
    C.Alarming.
    D.Satisfying.

  • 463.Movies about the future often show people travelling around in flying cars.Last Tuesday, that vision came a step closer to reality for a Japanese company called SkyDrive,as it showed off its new flying car,the SD-03,in action. The small car flew around for four minutes, staying about 1-2 meters off the ground.
The SD-03 is powered by batteries and has 8 motors, which lift it straight off the ground. What made this test flight special was that a pilot was on board.Toraohiro Fukuzawa, who leads SkyDrive, said,"Of the world's over 100 flying car projects, only a handful have succeeded with a person on board."
Many groups worldwide are working to develop flying cars. Some governments, including Japan's,are supporting the idea, hoping that in the future, flying cars will be useful for short trips like taxi rides in cities.Flying cars could also help reach places that can't be reached by road.
What happens when a motor fails? If flying cars are crossing a city,an accident could hurt not just people in the car,but people on the ground, too. That's why the SD-03 has eight motors—as backups.
Some people believe flying cars reduce traffic jams. But new systems will be needed to help control traffic in the air. With many cars flying around, these systems would be too complicated to be managed in real time by humans.Besides, flying cars are expensive. When it's ready,SkyDrive's flying car is expected to sell for between $300,000 and $500,000.
However, people who believe in flying cars point out that cars and airplanes faced challenges at first, too. With time, many of the big problems were solved.By 2050,Mr.Fukuzawa hopes people will be able to fly anywhere inside Tokyo in just 10 minutes. "I think flying cars will become normal in the near future." he says.

(1)What was special about this test flight?

    A.The car flew higher.
    B.The car was cheap.
C.The car flew on its own.
    D.The car carried a driver.
(2)Why is the SD-03 equipped with eight motors?

    A.To ensure its safety.
    B.To increase its flying speed.
    C.To make it look cool.
D.To enable it to carry more weight.
(3)Which aspect of the flying cars is mainly discussed in paragraph 5?

    A.Their design.
    B.Their application.
    C.Their cost.
    D.Their disadvantages.
(4)What is Mr.Fukuzawa's opinion about flying cars?

    A.They can be easily bought.
B.They have a long way to go.
    C.They have a promising future.
    D.They are environmentally friendly.

  • 465.Researchers found brushing your teeth three or more times per day is linked with lower risk of heart failure and atrial fibrillation ─a heart condition that causes an irregular and often abnormally fast heart rate.
One possible theory behind the discovery is that frequent tooth brushing reduces bacteria living in the pocket between the teeth and gums, preventing it from entering the bloodstream.Existing studies show poor oral hygiene (口腔衛(wèi)生) leads to bacteria in the blood, causing inflammation (炎癥) in the body Inflammation increases the risks of irregular heartbeat and heart failure, where the heart's ability to pump blood or relax and fill with blood is weakened.
In their new research, scientists in South Korea examined the connection between oral hygiene and occurrence of these two conditions in a series of studies of more than 161,000 participants aged between 40 and 79.
Participants underwent a routine medical examination between 2003 and 2004 and information was collected on height, weight, laboratory tests, illnesses, lifestyle, oral health, and oral hygiene behaviors.During a follow-up of ten and a half years on average, three percent of participants developed atrial fibrillation and around five percent developed heart failure.
The lead investigator of the new study is Tae─Jin Song,a doctor and professor at Mokdong Hospital at Ewha Womans University in Seoul,South Korea, said:"We studied a large group over a long period, which adds strength to our findings. But he also noted that the analysis was limited to one country and as an observational study does not prove causation.
An accompanying editorial states: "It is certainly too early to recommend tooth brushing for the prevention of atrial fibrillation and congestive heart failure. While the role of inflammation in the occurrence of heart and blood vessels' disease is becoming more and more evident, further studies are needed to explain strategies of public health importance."

(1)Which is true about frequent tooth brushing?

A.It reduces the risk of heart failure.
B.It promotes the heart beat faster.
C.It rids the bloodstream of bacteria.
D.It weakens the hearts' ability to pump blood.
(2)What does the underlined part "these two conditions" in paragraph 3 refer to?

    A.Inflammation and bacteria.
    B.Heart failure and atrial fibrillation.
C.Oral hygiene and occurrence of heart failure.
D.The heart's ability to pump blood or relax and fill with blood.
(3)It can be inferred that the outcome of the research

    A.is discouraging.
    B.has its limit.
    C.has its variety.
    D.is unexpected.
(4)From which is this text probably taken?

    A.A magazine.
    B.A diary.
    C.A guidebook.
    D.A novel.

  • 466.Astronauts traveling in space meet forms of radiation that are uncommon on Earth. Some of this radiation has been shown to be harmful to human health. It is linked to cancers and heart problems.Yet a new American study suggests the radiation does not shorten astronauts' lives.
Researchers studied nearly 60 years of health records and other data about male astronauts from the United States. They then compared this data with information about a group of men who are in good health, richer than most Americans and receive good health care-professional athletes. The study found that neither group has higher rates of dying at a young age.In fact, both groups generally live longer than other Americans.
Astronauts are usually well-educated,earn more money and are in better physical condition than the average American. Some earlier research has linked being an astronaut to a lower risk of early death, the researchers noted. The findings were reported in the publication Occupational & Environmental Medicine.
Much of the existing research on mortality rates in astronauts has not yet explored the mental and physical demands of this job. There also has not been a lot of research on whether astronauts show what is known as the "healthy worker effect".This effect leads people with employment of any kind to have fewer medical problems than people who are unable to work, said Robert Reynolds.
Reynolds said, "The challenge has always been to understand if astronauts are as healthy as they would be had they been otherwise comparably employed but had never gone to space at all.To do this,we need to find a group that is comparable on several important factors."

(1)How did researchers carry out their study?

    A.By doing interviews.
    B.By analyzing some factors.
    C.By comparing different data.
D.By doing experiments in the lab.
(2)What can we learn from the text?

A.All radiation is harmful to human health.
B.Athletes tend to be poorer than most Americans.
C.Healthy worker effect makes working people healthier.
D.Research has explored the mental and physical demands of being astronauts.
(3)What can he inferred from Reynolds' words?

A.They are determined to face the challenge.
B.The research is almost impossible to conduct.
C.Several important factors hold back the research.
D.Astronauts are as healthy even they haven't been Astronaut.
(4)What can be a suitable title for the text?

    A.Astronauts----Healthy or Otherwise
B.Astronauts Are as Healthy as Athletes
    C.Radiation Affects Astronauts' Health
    D.Astronauts---- Well-Educated and Earn More
