681."HEY,HOW YOU DONG?I'm Courtney. What grade are you in?Third? What's your favorite book?Elephant and Piggy?Yeah,I got it.
If you thought you'd walked into a library with a greeting like that, you wouldn't be too far off.In fact, you've entered the workplace of Courtney Holmes, also known as the Storybook Barber.
Two years ago,Dubuque,Iowa, held its first annual Back to School Bash, offering needy families an opportunity to learn about free resources in the community.Holmes agreed to participate. He was holding down two jobs at the time and Saturday was his busiest day,but he chose to give free haircuts to poor kids.Several times later he had a light-bulb moment:The kids should earn their free haircut by having to read a book to him.
The idea was so popular that he continued it the first Tuesday of every month for the next two years.Kids would grab a favorite book, settle into the barber chair, and read aloud while Holmes was hair-cutting,offering help when kids had trouble reading.
Holmes, who is married and has two sons, aged three and four, recognizes not every parent has the time to read with their kids. "I get it.You have four kids, and you're working two jobs.Sitting down and listening to them read is the last thing you have time to do.So bring your kids in and let them read to me."
Holmes admits he benefits from the free activity. "There was a seven-year-old who struggled through his book," said Holmes, "I had the boy take the book home and practice. When the child came back a few days later,he read it with no problems. That inspires me."

Robert and Henry were two friends in the same class. They always played together and went home together. One day,Robert and Henry were going home from school, when,on turning a comer,Robert cried out, "A fight!Let's go and see!"
"No," said Henry. "Let's go quietly home and not meddle(插手)with this quarrel. We have nothing to do with it and may get into trouble. Also our parents are expecting to have dinner with us together at home and I don't want them to worry about me."
"You are a coward(懦夫),and afraid to go," said Robert, and off he ran.Henry went straight home, and in the afternoon went to school as usual.
But Robert had told all the boys that Henry was a coward, and they laughed at him a great deal. From then on,they looked down upon Henry and didn't want to play with him together.
Henry was sad but he wasn't angry with Robert for his rude behavior, because he knew that they misunderstood him,and that he ought to be afraid of nothing but doing wrong. Thus,he just ignored(忽略) the other boys' laughter and continued to go to school and study as well. However,Robert didn't invite him to go home with him any more.Instead,he had some other boys who also thought Henry was a coward.Every day after school, they didn't go home directly but went to the river or somewhere to play games and had a lot of fun.
A few days later,Robert was bathing with his new friends in a river, and got out of his depth. He struggled and cried for help, but he failed. The boys who had called Henry a coward got out of the water as fast as they could, but they did nothing to help him.
