  • 12.    Two months of the hottest summers on record, the effects of extreme wildfires are being felt acutely throughout the world. In the US alone, over 55 million acres of land have been burned since 2015 due to wildfires.A report in early 2022 by the UN Environment Programme estimated that the number of extreme wildfires experienced globally will increase by 50 percent by 2100,largely as a result of increasing temperatures and widespread drought.
Wildfires can be deadly,as is seen in a newly released documentary,F(xiàn)rom Devil's Breath. The film tells the story of a community working together to recover from one of the most devastating wildfires in European history. On June 17,2017,four separate fires broke out in Portugal's rural city Pedróg?o Grande among one of the hottest, driest summers on record.Throughout the season, over 1.2 million acres of land were burned across the country. In Pedróg?o Grande alone, the fire claimed 66 lives and left a further 253 people injured, making it the deadliest wildfire in Portugal's history.Even several years since the fire, much of the landscape still bears the scars.
However, despite the devastation,Pedróg?o Grande's residents took the filmmakers by surprise. "I thought we might meet a more terrified community after this tragedy," Von Einsiedel said. "What we found was a community coming together to honor those who had lost their lives and stand by each other to heal from this collective trauma, while at the same time working hard to make sure a tragedy of this nature could never happen again."
Tom Crowther,a local resident, encountered a similar air of recovery. "Despite the devastation of the fires, hope prevailed," he said. "This hope was not only for a better future.People I spoke to were also genuinely motivated by the idea that their restoration of local nature can make a small contribution in the global fight against biodiversity loss and climate change."

(1)What is the function of Paragraph1?

A.To state the reasons of wildfires.
B.To introduce the topic of wildfires.
C.To show the report of wildfires.
D.To explain the concept of wildfires.
(2)What can we learn about the wildfires in Pedróg?o Grande?

A.Wildfires killed 66 people and injured 253 in Portugal.
B.Wildfires happened only because of the high temperature.
C.Over 1.2 billion acres of land were burned all over the country.
D.Many burned areas still don't recover well after the fire.
(3)Which aspect of the residents in Pedróg?o Grande surprised Von Einsiedel?

    A.Their support of each other.
    B.Their concern about this tragedy.
C.Their hope for a better future.
    D.Their contribution to climate change.
(4)What is the meaning of the underlined "prevailed" in the last paragraph?

    A.Predicted.
    B.Revealed.

  • 13.In 1926,US automaker Henry Ford shortened its employees' workweek from six eight-hour days to five, with no pay cuts. It's something workers and labor unions had been calling for.Ford wasn't responding to worker demands;he was being a businessman. He expected increased productivity and knew workers with more time and money would buy and use the products they were making. It was a way of encouraging consumerism and productivity to increase profits, and it succeeded.
Since standardization of the 40-hour workweek in the mid-20th century, everything has changed but the hours. If anything, many people are working even longer hours, especially in North America. This has a severe influence on human health and well-being,as well as the environment.Until the Second World War,it was common for one person in a family, usually the oldest male,to work full-time.Now,women make up 42 percent of the world's full-time workforce.Technology has made a lot of work unnecessary, with computers and robots doing many tasks previously performed by humans.
Well into the 21st century,we continue to work the same long hours as 20th century laborers, using up ever more of Earth's supply to produce more goods that we must keep working to buy,use and replace in a seemingly endless cycle of hard work and consumption. It's time to pause and consider better ways to live like shifting from fossil-fueled lifestyles with which our consumer-based workweeks are connected.
The UK think tank,New Economics Foundation, argues that a standard 21-hour workweek would address a number of interconnected problems: "overwork,unemployment,over-consumption,high carbon emissions, low well-being,and the lack of time to live sustainably,to care for each other, and simply to enjoy life".
Economic systems that require constant growth on a finite (有限的) planet don't make sense. It's time for a change in our economic thinking.

(1)Why did Ford decide to shorten the workweek?

    A.To make more profits.
    B.To cut workers' pay.
    C.To respond to worker demands.
    D.To meet labor unions' requirements.
(2)What change in the workforce happened after World War Ⅱ?

    A.The number of laborers decreased.
    B.More women worked full-time.
C.Technology enabled people to work shorter hours.
D.It was unnecessary for a family's oldest male to work.
(3)What can we infer from the third paragraph?

A.Longer working hours means better consumption ability.
B.The 21st century sees the longest working hours in history.
C.Pausing our way of living can change the present workweek.
D.The cycle of hard work and consumption should be changed.
(4)New Economics Foundation thinks a 21-hour workweek will
    .
    A.increase unemployment
    B.encourage people to enjoy life
    C.cause various problems
    D.challenge the economic growth

  • 14.    People have always had trouble pronouncing his name. The 19th-century British prime minister Benjamin Disraeli was once laughed at in Parliament for getting it wrong. If you don't speak German,it's not at all obvious how you are supposed to say it.A safe bet is to start with a hard 'g' on 'Ger...' and end with a 'ter':Ger-ter.
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe has often been seen as one of Europe's big cultural heroes— comparable to the likes of Shakespeare,Dante and Homer. He was excellent in a wide range of areas:he wrote many poems, was a huge hit as a novelist and made scientific contributions in physiology, geology and botany. He was also a diplomat, fashion guru (專(zhuān)家),a senior civil servant, the head of a university,a fine artist,an adventurous traveller, the director of a theatre company and the head of a mining company.
During his life,Goethe's admirers were impressed by his literary works. But more than any of his books, what impressed people at the time was how he lived his life, the kind of person he was.The life was more significant than the books (which helps explain why, unlike Jane Austen or Marcel Proust, his literary works are relatively unknown).
Goethe was born in the city of Frankfurt in 1749.His family was comfortably off—it was new money, made from keeping an inn.
Goethe's parents took great care with his schooling:he was mainly educated at home;he wrote poetry for his friends, took art classes, and learned Italian. He went to the theatre a lot and became friends with actors. As a member of the upper class,he wore a sword in public from the age of 12.
Goethe studied at the University of Leipzig and later did a master's degree in law at the University of Strasbourg. He often went to a viewing platform high up on a nearby cathedral tower. He was afraid of heights. But he made himself do it because he liked to overcome difficulties—and loved the view.

(1)Why was Benjamin Disraeli laughed at in Parliament?

A.He pronounced his own name wrongly.
B.He didn't know how to speak German.
    C.He couldn't say Goethe's name correctly.
D.He once wrote Goethe as Ger-ter mistakenly.
(2)What is special about Goethe, compared to Shakespeare,Dante and Homer?

A.He did well in a variety of fields.
B.He was a British big cultural hero.
C.He was one of the literature masters.
D.He wrote numerous novels and poems.
(3)What can we know about Goethe?

A.Goethe ran an inn with comfortable rooms by himself.
B.Goethe's parents devoted themselves to his education.
C.Goethe's literary works impressed people most at his time.
D.Goethe belonged to the upper class due to his royal family.
(4)Which can best describe Goethe's personality?

    A.Cautious and famous.
    B.Selfless and confident.
    C.Honest and generous.
    D.Brave and intelligent.

Tom has an aunt who lives in a far-off village. He hadn't seen her for two years and he really missed her.
Tom spent a lot of time with his aunt when he was a little boy.At that time, his parents were too busy with their work,so they sent him to his aunt.It was his aunt who took care of him for a long time.He remembered that back then a girl sometimes played with him.But he couldn't remember her clearly. After all,it had been so many years before.
Last week,Tom decided to visit his aunt. And he called her first.
"Hello,Auntie. This is Tom.How are you?" asked Tom over the phone.
        "I'm fine,Tom.Thanks.I'm just a bit lonely," said Tom's aunt.Hearing that,he knew he had made a right decision.
"I'm coming this weekend.I want to spend the weekend with you," he immediately said, thinking his aunt would be surely full of joy.
"Really? That's great!I miss you so much." his aunt said excitedly.
Tom set off on Friday afternoon. He thought he would arrive by bus in the evening, but there was an accident on the road and all the traffic was stopped for almost an hour. When he got off the bus,it was getting dark.
It's a ten-minute walk from the bus station to his aunt's house. The village had experienced a lot of changes.Tom looked around curiously.Just at that moment, another bus stopped and a girl got off the bus.The girl passed by Tom and began to walk into the village.Thinking that his aunt was waiting for him,Tom began to walk into the village, too.
He walked behind the girl. After about two minutes,it seemed that the girl noticed him.She looked back hurriedly, and then continued to walk.Moments later, the girl looked back again and then quickened her pace.

It seemed that the girl was a bit scared.
