11.Real financial security and freedom is not in our job but in our passion. It's easy to define and evaluate a man by his pursuit.Joseph Campbell once said, "Follow your dream and the universe will open doors where there are only walls."
In life,we'll always be found doing any of these two things:either making a living or making a difference.Pensions (養(yǎng)老金)and salaries stop many from pursuing excellence while passion unlocks hidden potentials that equip us for challenges and opportunities.A job helps us make a living while passion enables us to make a difference.
I want to sincerely help to adjust and clarify the misguided belief among workers that a job is a means of livelihood.Rather,it should be a means to fuel our passion. The earlier you realize this basic truth of life, the more clearly you'll be able to position yourself in living a life of impact and value.
The success of Kentucky Fried Chicken(KFC)shows how meaningful it is to pursue your passion instead of your pension. Its founder,Colonel Harland Sanders, didn't realize this until he was given his first social security check of 105 dollars. But he decided that there surely was something to do for himself and other people instead of living on that small pension. He was determined to engage himself in what brought him impact and value.Drawing inspiration from his mother's special recipe for fried chicken,he invented "finger-licking" seasoning with eleven spices and herbs.Despite much rejection,he managed to round up some investors and promote company's rapid expansion to more than 6,000 locations.Sanders' life pointed towards two facts about making a difference:one, there is no age that is too old to make a difference;two, there is nothing too small or insignificant to make a difference with,as long as it is your passion.
(1)How does the author support his argument in paragraph 2?
A.By listing examples.
B.By including a quote.
C.By showing contrast.
D.By sharing his experience.
(2)How did Sanders probably feel when offered his first social security check?
A.Deeply moved.
B.Internally motivated
C.Greatly relieved.
D.Pleasantly surprised
(3)What does the author intend to do ?
A.Give career guidance.
B.Advise us to pursue our passion.
C.Persuade us to get a well-paid job.
D.Secure our position.
(4)What is the best title for this text?
A.Following Your Dreams
B.Working for Pension
C.To Work or not to Work?
D.Passion or Pension?組卷:0引用:1難度:0.5 -
12.Along with the standard pigments(顏料)and paintbrushes, artist Sean Yoro(known as Hula),requires an unconventional piece of equipment for his particular brand of mural(壁畫(huà))making:a paddleboard.
The Hawaian muralist, balanced on the top of the floating platform, describes women from various sites across the world, whose homelands are often threatened by the effects of global warming.
For his most recent project, titled "What If You Fly",Hula traveled to Baffin Island, off the coast of Nunavut,Canada,to paint a portrait of local Inuit woman Jesse Mike, who lives there with her daughter.
In a short film telling of the artist's process,Mike explains her frustrating previous experiences working with filmmakers who reported on the terrible circumstances troubling her endangered landscape. "For most people,it's about the polar bears,it's not about the people." she said. "Well, let's make it about the people. "
Hula and his team spent 14 hours searching for the perfect iceberg canvas(油畫(huà)布),knowing all the while that the ice itself, and any image created on the top of it,would soon melt away into nothing.
"It's a little ambitious to do this larger than life ice mural in the Arctic, and somehow,at the same time, make a connection to the human culture," climber and filmmaker Renan Ozturk said of the project.
When Hula found his proper ice,he painted a portrait of Jesse he took earlier on his camera.Working against the power of time and Mother Nature, the artist aimed to finish as much of Jesse's portrait as he could before the iceberg disappeared.
The massive image,Hula's most remote and technically challenging piece yet, communicates a memorable reality—the consequences of climate change, first and foremost, affect people.
(1)What is "What If You Fly"?
A.A film about the muralist.
B.A project conducted by Hula.
C.A painting based on a local Inuit.
D.A woman called Jesse Mike.
(2)Why did Jesse Mike complain about some filmmakers?
A.They only reported on terrible circumstances.
B.They didn't focus on human beings.
C.They just reported on frustrating experiences.
D.They showed no sympathy to the endangered landscape.
(3)Why did Hula paint image on the Arctic ice?
A.He made an attempt to paint on varieties of materials.
B.He was ambitious enough to explore Mother Nature.
C.He warned people of the consequences of global warming.
D.He wanted to show his unconventional painting.
(4)What can be the best title for the text?
A.A Muralist and an Inuit
B.Arctic Ice Painting,Memorable Reality
C.Mother Nature,Massive Images
D.Standard Tools,Unconventional Paintings組卷:0引用:2難度:0.5 -
13.The hike to the lost Incan city of Choquequirao is one of the most difficult in Peru. From the town of Cachora, which is 161km west of Cusco,it's an 18km walk to Capuliyoc Mountain, then down to Playa Rosalina, where travellers camp for the night.Waking early, travellers then have to cross the Apurímac River and walk uphill to camp close to the ruins. Then, the next morning,it's another 2km walk up to the ruins,3,100 m above sea level. To get back?Well,it's the same way you came.
"I've had people in their 60s and 70s do it," said Juan Barrios,a guide from the Adventure Life company. "But some people come out thinking that because it's only 28km from the drop off they can do it in a day.Six or seven days for the hike is best."
It makes sense, then, that Choquequirao draws only about 30 people a day during the high season(June through August).Compare that to the 2,500 people who arrive each day at the famous Incan city of Machu Picchu.
But for those who make the journey, the rewards(回報(bào))are great:beautiful mountain views at every turn, and the chance to explore the wonderful ruins nearly alone.
Believed to be created around the same time as Machu Picchu,in 1445,Choquequirao is actually larger than better-known Machu Picchu. But very little has been written about Peru's other lost city and researchers are still uncovering new parts of the ruins, leaving life on the mountain relatively untouched.
But officials say that the building of the first cable car(纜車(chē))to Choquequirao will shorten the several-day walk to a 15-minute cable car ride.As a result, the number of travellers that now make the journey each week could turn into 3,000 visitors per day.
Choquequirao is beautiful now because of how untouched it is.Even though the lost city was discovered by Spanish explorer Juan Arias Díaz in 1710,the ruins still make you feel as though you're the first to find them. Will it be the same when more travellers flood in (大量涌入)?
(1)What does the first paragraph centre on?
A.How tall Choquequirao is.
B.How to get to Choquequirao easily.
C.What great views Choquequirao has.
D.How hard the trip to Choquequirao is.
(2)In what way is Choquequirao different from Machu Picchu?
A.Choquequirao is older.
B.Choquequirao is quieter.
C.Choquequirao is smaller.
D.Choquequirao is better known.
(3)How are the ruins of Choquequirao?
A.They're still being dug out.
B.They're in a generally poor condition.
C.They're being renewed at the moment.
D.They've been researched internationally.
(4)What does the author think of Choquequirao in the future?
A.It will be more attractive.
B.It will develop at a slow speed.
C.It won't necessarily take a turn for the better.
D.It won't be more popular than Machu Picchu.組卷:103引用:4難度:0.5

Yoghurt It was a rough week. The price of oil skyrocketed as the temperature dropped sharply in Maine. We were looking at a high of eight degrees that week, and I had missed three days of work so my paycheck was going to be lower than normal.I was stressed,to say the least.I shopped strategically, looking for every possible way to cut pennies so I could buy groceries and keep the house warm.
My eight-year-old son didn't understand when I told him we were struggling that week.He wanted a special kind of yoghurt, but I didn't have the extra three dollars to buy it for him.It was the kind of yoghurt with a cartoon kid riding a skateboard on the front of the box,and a mere two spoonfuls in each cup.It was the kind of product that wastes a parent's money and makes me hate advertising.
I felt guilty as a parent when those big eyes looked at me with confusion,as if to say,"It's just yoghurt. What's the big deal?" So I found a way.I put something back as single mothers often do.He got his yoghurt.
On the way driving back from the grocery store,I noticed a homeless man holding a sign by the side of the road.My heart hurt, and I tried not to look at him.I watched people stay away from him on the street and walk by without even meeting his eyes.My son didn't seem to care much, either.I looked at the man closely then- bare hands grasping a piece of cardboard, snot(鼻涕)frozen to his face,a worn-out jacket. And there I was struggling because I had to buy oil and groceries. But I decided to help.I pulled over to the man and handed him a five-dollar bill.
