Before leaving China，Che Zhaosheng's shiftu，or teacher，said to him，"After you go to the United States，share some of our Chinese culture if you have a chance."Today，decades later，the student is fulfilling that expectation.
   Che is now a specialist gardener for a penjing court in the newly expanded Chinese Garden in Huntington，Bom in Guangzhou，Che started studying penjing at the age of 26.However，his effort to introduce penjing in America seemed fruitless at first."When first arriving here as a Chinese，we're penniless，"he says."I have taken jobs in restaurants and worked as a residential gardener.Later，I struggled as a volunteer to tend to a small collection of black pine penjing."
   Then，chance turned up when Huntington looked for someone who knew penjing to build a Chinese Garden.Che became the first technical specialist gardener there.That was more than a decade ago，and today，an enthusiastic 69-year-old with a broad-brimmed straw hat，Che both cultivates（培植） penjing and tends to the ones in the Huntington's collection.
   Some penjing use wires to train the plants into desired shapes.Che does not.Beginning with a taproof or sometimes a plant started by another gardener.Che studies the shape of the trees，lets each grow to the desired diameter（直徑），and then makes what he calls"the first cut".He cuts off the mini-trunk at that strategic point and lets it grow from there，in a method called"clip and grow".Although a penjing typically will involve multiple plants that have a landscape-like setting with rocks and maybe water，many of Che's penjing feature one tree—and the differences may be more regional，according to certain demands.
   "Penjing takes time，a lot of time，and it can take 20 or even 30 years，like raising a child，"Che says."But，I'm happy to stay here and let them go out into the world，where other people can appreciate them."
