At school,I avoided Nick because he has long hair as a boy and looks like a troublemaker.During lunch,he sat alone playing with his food while I chatted with my friends. My parents always warned, "Stay away from that Nick. He's nothing but trouble."
One day after class,I was reading under a tree when a group of big boys came over laughing. They knocked the book out of my hands.
"Oh look,it's a little baby." one said.To my shock, they grabbed(抓) the cup sitting next to me,a gift from my late grandmother.
"Give that back!" I shouted anxiously.
"Oh,we can't touch the baby's cup?" the boy laughed, holding it out of reach. The others snatched it from him and tossed(拋) it around. As I watched them taunt me,tears streamed down my face.
Just then,Nick ran up and yelled, "Stop right now or I'm telling your parents!"
The bullies hurried off. "Let's go guys, this loser isn't worth it." I heard one say as they disappeared from view.
After calming down for a few minutes,I suddenly realized they had taken my cup too!As I cried and gasped for air,Nick patted my shoulder comforting me.He helped me search the entire school for my precious cup.We looked in the classrooms and playground until finally,as the sun was setting,we found the cup half-buried in a sand of the schoolyard.
"Here it is!" Nick said, gently digging it out and brushing off the sand. "I'm really sorry they took your cup.Are you okay?"
I nodded, thanking him deeply. As we walked back,I apologized for avoiding him all this time.Nick just gave an understanding smile.I realized I had completely misjudged him.
The next day at lunch,I sat with Nick and shared my sandwiches with him. We've been good friends ever since.I learned that everyone can't judge a book by its cover.Though Nick seemed reckless,he was a true hero to me.
