Isabel's parents were Canadian and arrived in China in 1912.They dedicated themselves to setting up schools and education institutions in southwest China.Crook herself was more interested in anthropology (人類學(xué)) and ethnic minorities in China. While Isabel's parents left China in 1942,Isabel would remain and continues to call the country home to this very day.The 107-year-old has lived 90 years of her life in China.
As a foreign girl born in an Asian country that was undergoing significant changes, she had every reason to be curious about what was going on around her.At the age of 23,Crook graduated from a Canadian college with a master's degree and began carrying out field research in rural areas in Sichuan Province.
In the early 1940s,Isabel met the British communist David Crook and the two were married in 1942.Their life journey together would continue until David died in 2000.In 1947,the couple was warmly welcomed by the Communist Party of China (CPC) to observe and study the revolutionary land reforms taking place in Chjye.aia.In 1948,the Foreign Affairs Committee of the CPC asked Isabel and David to stay and teach at a newly established foreign affairs school. The school was the forerunner of today's Beijing Foreign Studies University. The couple brought new Western teaching methodologies to the classroom, laying vital foundations for foreign-language education in China.Their passion for teaching lasted decades and their students have served as diplomats (外交官) to facilitate China's peaceful engagement with other countries.
Considering the trials and difficulties Isabel has tackled during her lifetime,we imagine she is weathering the current global storm with the same determination and adventurous spirit that has kept her in China all these years. In a nod 1 o Isabel's devotion,in 2019 she was awarded the Medal of Friendship,China's highest award for foreigners who have made economic or social contributions to the country.

Each play has a theme or central idea which the playwright(劇作家) hopes to get across through dialogue and action.A few characters are used to create a single impression growing out of the theme. It is not my intention to point out the central theme of each of the plays in this collection, for that would, indeed, ruin the pleasure of reading, discussing, and thinking about the plays and the effectiveness of the playwright. However,a variety of types is represented here. These include comedy, satire, poignant drama, historical and regional drama. To show the versatility(多面性) of the short play,I have included a guidance play,a radio play and a television play.
Among the writers of the plays in this collection,Paul Green,Susan Glaspell,Maxwell Anderson,Thornton Wilder,William Saroyan, and Tennessee Williams have all received Pulitzer Prizes for their contributions to the theater.More information about the playwrights will be found at the end of this book.
To get the most out of reading these plays, try to picture the play on stage, with you,the reader,in the audience. The houselights dim(變暗).The curtains are about to open, and in a few minutes the action and dialogue will tell you the story.

A.He has written dozens of plays.

D.Offering information on the playwrights.
(3)What does the author suggest readers do while reading the plays?
A.Control their feelings.
B.Apply their acting skills.
C.Use their imagination.
D.Keep their audience in mind.
(4)What is this text?
A.A short story.
B.An introduction to a book.
C.A play review.

Many years ago I stepped into a bookstore in Cincinnati in search of some books that I wanted. While I was there,a poor little boy, about twelve, came in to ask whether they had a world atlas(地圖冊) for sell.
"Yes.It costs one dollar," replied the salesman. "I have only sixty-two cents," the boy said.
"Would you let me have it and wait a little while for the rest of the money?" His request being refused, the boy left.I followed him. "And what now?" I asked.
"I shall try another place,sir."
"Do you mind if I go too and see how you succeed?"
"If you like," he said in surprise.
Four times I saw the look on the boy's face turn to disappointment. But he continued. When we entered the fifth store,he told the bookseller what had happened. When asked why he wanted the atlas so much, the boy said, "My father was a sailor, but he is dead.I want to know about the places he used to go to and I'm going to be a sailor, too."
Deeply touched, the bookseller sold the boy an atlas and presented him with a new pencil for his perseverance (毅力).I also gave him two dollars for other books he wanted.Tears in his eyes,he told us his name is William Hartley. He hoped to repay us some day.
Many years later,I left for Liverpool by wjye.aier.At the end of the journey, there came a terrible storm and the ship was in trouble.A great leak was filling the ship with water. The crew was made up of strong and able men.But after fighting for one whole night with the water still flowing in,the sailors gave up desperately.
But the captain didn't give up.He ordered every man to his position and went below to look for the leak.As he passed me,I asked whether there was any hope of saving the ship.He looked at me,firmly saying "Yes,sir. As long as one inch of this ship remains above water, there is hope."

So,you can imagine all these 100-year lifespans in a chain,end-to-end.When you look at things like that, human civilization has not been around very long at all.And an individual life is extremely tiny.
Many of us go through life struggling about the various decisions we have to make.In fact,on a cosmic(宇宙的) level, the costs aren't that high.If you're scared about launching a creative project, you might as well do it,because it doesn't matter much, even if it goes wrong.
Additionally, another philosopher,Iddo Landau, has pointed out that when we think of ourselves as important in planning things,it leads to problems in creating a meaningful life because we set the goal too high. It's as if you can only count your life as meaningful if you changed the course of world events or became internationally famous.
If we cut everything down to size and drop back into the reality of our situation, you'll see that far more things than you'd thought count as meaningful ways to spend your time on Earth - even ordinary things.Cooking a meal for your family - that's meaningful.Creating things that help even a small number of people is meaningful.Making some tiny contribution to the betterment of your neighborhood - that matters.
All sorts of things you're doing right now might be more meaningful than you realize. So,be happy as you really are using your limited time in a way that matters.

The demand for study lounges rose in China because students can hardly find a peaceful place to study after finishing classes. Before 2018,there were few study lounges in China, and the few that existed were mainly in first- and second-tier cities such as Guangzhou,Suzhou and Tianjin.Yet by 2019,they had become popular nationwide.
But the pandemic (流行?。?has dealt a blow to the industry.Since personal contact in a closed environment is unavoidable, the pandemic forced all study lounges to shut down for several months.Lou Qingxiao, founder of Xinliuzaowu, one of Beijing's earliest study lounge brands that opened in 2018,said their first study lounge near Renmin University of China had made ends meet before the pandemic.Li Hang and Zhang Yang,co-founders of Sishiloushi,a Beijing-based independent study lounge, said that even before COVID-19 broke out,the industry's profit was neither promising nor clear, let alone in such a particular period.
"Rent is a major fixed cost for study lounges, especially in first-tier cities," Lou said.In a first-tier city such as Beijing, rentals comprise more than a half of a study lounge's monthly operation cost. But Lou sounds optimistic about the industry commercial prospects, "because it's a blue ocean with less competition."
Study lounges provide a better learning experience that people cannot get in free public libraries. "Privately operated study lounges like ours actually make up for the shortage of public infrastructure (基礎(chǔ)設(shè)施) and public services and we are willing to cooperate with the government to better serve the public."
