1.My father got his first job when he was eleven years old, cleaning up the garbage outside of the bowling alley (保齡球場).Two years later his dad died, and my father took odd jobs to help put food on the table during the Depression.Ten years after that,Dad fell in love, married Mom and had a baby girl.Eight more children followed.During those years,Dad slipped into a routine he never broke. He woke up before six, took the train to work and wouldn't get home until after five thirty. After supper,Dad spent the rest of the evening in the basement making dental parts for extra money.
Two years ago,at the age of sixty four,Dad retired. When I was young,Mom and Dad did well to hide the fact that we were poor. All nine of us attended Catholic schools and we always had plenty of school supplies. We slept in wooden beds, shared one bathroom and watched television from a tiny black and white set in the living room.Mom and Dad never bought anything for themselves. They clipped coupons, wore the same pair of sneakers for twenty years and sewed worn clothing together every Saturday afternoon.
At his retirement party,I wanted to thank Dad for all his hard work and sacrifice by buying him the best present I could think of.As I shopped though,I realized there was nothing I could buy for Dad.Dad taught me through his own faith that the greatest gifts come from the heart. Finally,I left my present on the kitchen table for Dad to find before he left for his final day at work.

2.People have been growing chrysanthemums (菊花) for more than 2,000 years.Chrysanthemums make bright and colourful gardens.People in China and other Asian countries make tea with the flowers.
One basic kind of chrysanthemums is the garden chrysanthemum. The other basic kind is the florist chrysanthemum. The garden chrysanthemum is better able to handle different growing conditions.
There are many varieties of chrysanthemums. The decorative chrysanthemum is often seen in gardens.Another popular type, the quill chrysanthemum, has long, straight petals (花瓣) like a tube or needle.
Chrysanthemum blooms can be white, yellow, gold, red or other colours. The plants often grow one metre high.
The soil for chrysanthemums should be kept moist but well drained so it does not get too wet.
Newlyplanted chrysanthemums should be watered two or three times a week, depending on conditions.Plants established in the ground may do well just with normal rainfall.
Chrysanthemums grow best in full sunshine. They produce colourful blooms when days get shorter and nights get longer. The life cycle of the plant depends on the amount of daylight. This is why experts advise against placing chrysanthemums near nightlights or streetlights. The light may interfere with their normal growth cycle. The plants may develop buds too soon.
In climates where temperatures fall below freezing, plant chrysanthemums at least six weeks before the first frost. That way,the plants will be well established for cold weather.
Some gardeners say the most beautiful presentation comes from planting chrysanthemums close together. But be sure to leave enough space to let air flow between the plants. If not, there may be a greater chance of disease.
To get more blooms, gardeners pinch out (掐掉) the branches when new growth has reached fifteen centimetres.Squeeze about five to seven centimetres off each branch.Pinch it again when a branch grows another twelve to fifteen centimetres.Stop the pinching about one hundred days before you want the plants to bloom.

3.There is a brown female Canadian duck that weighs only four hundred fifty grams. The duck had flown to the southern state of Florida for the winter.A hunter shot it on January fifteenth and took it to his home in the city of Tallahassee. He put it in the refrigerator. Two days later the man's wife opened the refrigerator door. The duck lifted its head and looked at her.It was alive!
The family took the duck to a doctor who treats animals. The doctor gave the duck to the Goose Creek Animal Sanctuary(避難所).Animal sanctuaries provide homes for animals and teach people about their care.
The doctor said it was easy to understand why people thought the duck was dead.He said ducks generally do not move a lot, especially after being shot. And he said its low body temperature helped it survive in the refrigerator.
That was enough to make the duck famous around the world. The Tallahassee Democrat newspaper published the story that was reprinted in many different countries. But that was not the end of the story.Workers at the wildlife sanctuary named the duck Perky. And they arranged for the doctor to perform an operation to repair the duck's damaged wing.During the operation,Perky stopped breathing-not just once but twice. The doctor tried to save Perky by giving her oxygen through a face mask. But he finally said the duck had died.A few seconds later, however,Perky began to move.Reports say the people in the operating room were so happy that they cried.
Workers at the wildlife sanctuary say Perky will not have any more operations. It seems she had a bad reaction to the drugs that were used.Perky is expected to live at the sanctuary. And a local company has begun to sell T-shirts showing a picture of the lucky duck.Money from the sale of the shirts will help pay for Perky's care.
