  • 1.Early people lived by hunting animals and gathering grains(谷物).After a tribe(部落) had lived in an area for some time, its food supply would begin to reduce. Then the tribe had to move to new hunting grounds where there was more food.
This way of life caused special problems for the tribes. They were forced to depend on luck,as well as on their hunting skills. If they could find no game, the whole tribe was in danger of starving. And when the hunters had good luck one day, they were not sure whether they would find game the next time. The tribes moved often because much land was needed to support their people.
Finally, people learned that they could grow their food.At first, women of the tribes raised patches of wild grains.Later, people discovered that they could plant their own seeds.Farming slowly became a way of life.
As people turned away from hunting and moved to farming, their life changed. When the food supply became more constant, they no longer moved from place to place. The success of their crops depended partly on the weather, but there were also things they could do to help crops grow.
In the past,a tribe had to travel many miles for food.Later, only a small amount of land was necessary to feed the whole tribe. The tribe could grow in size because farming provided a way to feed people.

  • 2.When someone has been bitten by a snake, try to find out if the snake is poisonous or harmless.Their bite marks are usually different. The bite of most of most poisonous snake leaves marks of two fangs. If the bit of a snake leaves only two rows of teeth marks, but no fang marks,it is less likely that the snake is poisonous.
People often believe that certain harmless snakes are poisonous.Try to find out which of the snakes in your ares are truly poisonous and which are not. Please do not kill non-poisonous snakes, because they do no harm.On the contrary, they kill mice and other pests that do lots of damage. Some even kill poisonous snakes.
Here is some treatment for poisonous snakebite:
*Stay quiet:don't move the bitten part. The more it's moved, the faster the poison will spread through the body.If the bite is on the foot, the person should not walk at all.
*Remove jewellery because swelling(腫脹) can spread rapidly.
*Wrap the bitten are with a wide elastic bandage or clean cloth to slow the spread of poison.Keeping the arm or leg very still, wrap it tightly, but not so tight that it stops the pulse(脈搏) at the wrist or on top of the foot.If you cannot feel the pulse, loosen the bandage a little.
*Wind the bandage over the hand or foot, and up the whole arm or leg.Make sure you can still feel the pulse.
*Carry the person to the nearest health center. If you can also take the snake, because different snakes may require different antivenoms(抗蛇毒血清).
*Poisonous snakebite is dangerous.Send for medical help----but always do the things explained above at once. Some treatments, such as cutting the skin around the bite and sucking the venom out of the bite, can cause infection. And remember:Never drink alcohol after snakebjye.aie.It makes things worse!

(1)What is the purpose of Paragraph 2?

A.To introduce different kinds of snakes to us.

  • 3.The United States Environmental Protection Agency says only seven percent of plastic waste in the United States is recycled each year.A new company in northern New York says it can increase that percentage. It also says it can help the United States reduce the amount of oil it imports.
The company has a machine called the "plastic-eating monster".Every hour, thousands of kilograms of milk jugs, water bottles? and grocery bags are fed into the machine. The plastic waste comes from landfills across the United States.John Bordynuik runs the company, called JBI.
Mr.Bordynuik has invented a new process for turning plastic into fuel.First, many different kinds of unwashed plastics are melted together.
Mr.Bordynuik uses a special chemical to turn the liquid into a vapour. This reduces the plastic to its most basic elements.
"Plastics are just long hydrocarbon chains. What we're doing is re-forming them into links and chains that we want so they have a high fuel value.
Eight percent of the recycled plastic is used to run the system.Independent testers say eighty-six percent of what goes in comes out as fuel.
Bob Molodynia helps run the company. He watches as the plastic-eating machine pours a thin, brown liquid into an oil barrel.
JBI produces several thousand liters of fuel a day.It creates different grades of fuel for different industries. It sells the fuel for up to one hundred dollars a barrel. Each barrel costs about ten dollars to produce.
Scientists say plastic-to-oil technology is still new and developing. They say it is not yet known if the process is environmentally friendly. And some question whether turning plastic into oil can even be considered "recycling".
Carson Maxted is with the publication Resource Recycling,a magazine that reports on the plastic recycling industry. He says because there is a lot of plastic waste and a great demand for oil,JBI's recycling technology may create great changes in both industries.

(1)What should be the best title of the passage?

A.Could Waste Plastic Reduce Our Need for Oil?
B.How Can Waste Plastic Be Changed into Oil?
C.What Should We Do to Reduce the Import of Oil?
    D.What Is the "Plastic-eating Monster"?
(2)What is the purpose of using a special chemical?

    A.To melt the unwanted plastic.
B.To turn liquid plastic into vapour.
    C.To turn plastic into fuel.
D.To make the machine use more plastic.
    (3)From the passage,we know
    .
A.there is a great profit for JBI to turn waste plastic to oil
B.plastic-to-oil technology is very developed in America
C.the process of turning plastic into fuel is environmentally friendly
D.JBI's recycling technology must create great changes in the plastic recycling industry
(4)Who is the boss of JBI?

    A.Carson Maxted.
    B.John Bordynuik.
    C.Bob Molodynia.
    D.Machicl Smiths.

  • 9.A couple of months before I started high school,my parents gave me the greatest gift any teenage boy would ask for:a cellphone.I lived on that phone all summer.I always texted my friends, even at night. And I paid no attention to the people and things around myself.Being connected to the Internet was more important than being present.
So,you can imagine my displeasure when I learned what my dad had planned for our family vacation that year.It was not the Disneyland trip or beach vacation that I had been hoping for. "This year," my dad said, "we'll be doing something special, something I used to do with my dad when I was a kid. We're going camping in the forest!"
His excitement was met with a disappointed sigh(失望的嘆息),which was my communication style at that age.But he had made the decision and would not change his mind.I comforted myself by telling myself that it was still a vacation.I remained uninfluenced when they were busy preparing for the vacation.
My mind was on my phone, the texts flying back and forth.I focused on the screen in my hands so much that the first time I looked up was when we drove across a bridge on the trip to our campsite.
I looked out of the window and saw a fast-moving river. The air blowing into the car from the open windows was hot and smelt of trees. But that didn't matter to me.The reason why I had looked up was for something far more serious and annoying. My phone no longer had service. The signal was weak.During the last hour of the drive, there was no signal at all.
    注意:
    (1)續(xù)寫詞數(shù)應為150左右;
    (2)請按如下格式作答。
My dad explained he had chosen a campsite that had no phone service. ?
    _____
The next morning, without checking my phone as usual,I fixed my mind on nature around myself.
