19．On a sunny afternoon in July，my husband Lenny took the garbage to the town's landfill（填埋場(chǎng)）.After unloading，Lenny walked around to see what others had thrown away.Being a person who finds treasure in what others call trash，Lenny would sometimes bring home what he called " great finds"，though our five-year-old daughter Cindy always disliked him doing so.
Since it was a small-town landfill，it was never monitored（監(jiān)控），and the gates were locked only at night.As Lenny walked around that day，he heard a "meow" and looked around but saw nothing.Then he saw a shoe box in the garbage pile move slightly，and he heard the cries again.When he picked up the box，cut the tape and carefully tore open the shoe box，he found a black-and-white kitten，about eight weeks old.He will never forget the terrified look in the kitten's eyes after he removed the lid.It was so frightened that it jumped into his arms and held him with its tiny claws.
The kitten was not wild and was already familiar with humans.It wasn't afraid of him.The poor thing was very thin and had probably been taken away from its mother only recently.Someone had cruelly left that kitten to die there on the landfill.
