  • 2.I think the most profound (深遠的)influence in my life was my father. He was an inventor and a scientist with an inquisitive (好奇的)mind. He loved and was greatly stimulated by the beauty and the design he found in nature.Once he was asked how he got the idea for his invention, the silencer. He answered,"By watching the way water behaved when it went down a drain."
This simple statement opened up for me the ideas which led to a firm belief that human intelligence needs no bounds.I believe that through the use of our intelligence we will move progressively closer to an understanding of man and of the universe around us and that this knowledge will bring a closer harmony between man and his surroundings. And then, this way lies the chance to make the world a better place to live.
Then I remember sitting with him on his boat one night in early September. He was deeply interested in astronomy and the stars were brilliant. He led my mind into unforgettable speculation (思索)as we explored the great beauty of that night.I think from this I came to understand that there must be law and order in our universe. There is design.Humans can observe.Humans can learn to understand. Finally, humans can apply. The secret is to apply in the interests of the common good.It is not for one or a few but for all people.
My mother and father each had an acute social conscience. They believed that because good fortune had given them better than average opportunities, they had a duty to perform in their communities. From this,no doubt, came my own conviction (主張)that I must give more than I receive and that a satisfactory life must be measured by its usefulness to others.I learned that each one of us has a right to his beliefs. From this understanding,I moved into the belief that people everywhere must learn how to work together for the common purpose of the improvement of human beings.

  • 3.The"dog days,"I always thought, were those so hot summer days that even dogs would lie around on the earth, breathing loudly.Originally, the phrase actually had nothing to do with dogs,or even with the lazy days of summer. The dog days refer to the dog star-Sirius (天狼星).
To the Greeks and Romans, the"dog days"occurred around the day when Sirius appeared to rise just before the sun,in late July. They referred to these days as the hottest time of the year.If you go back even as far as a book The Iliad,it describes the star as being associated with war and disaster. All throughout Greek and Roman literature, you found these things. The phrase"dog days"was translated from Latin to English about 500 years ago.Since then,it has taken on new meanings.
Are the dog days, around when Sirius rises, really the hottest days of the year?Although July and August are generally known as the hottest months of the year in Europe, the hottest period can vary from year to year.In Athens, for instance,Sirius will rise around the middle of August this year. But it'll happen earlier in the next year.
There's another reason that the dog days don't correspond (與…一致)neatly with the heat."Our Earth is like a spinning top (陀螺),"said Bradley Schaefer, professor of physics and astronomy at Louisiana State University."If you throw it onto a table, after it slows down the pointing direction of the top will slowly go around in circles.Similarly to a ball, the Earth's movement is kind of wobbling (搖晃)around."
The calendar is fixed according to certain events, but the stars have shifted according to the way that the Earth wobbles. So in about 50 years, the sky shifts about one degree. This means that the dog days of ancient Greece aren't the dog days of today. What it also means is that thousands of years from now, this event won't even occur during the summer.

(1)What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?

    A.The origin of the"dog days".
    B.The influence of the"dog days".
    C.The occurrence of the"dog days".
    D.The misunderstanding of the"dog days".
    (2)From Paragraph 3,we know

A.people in Europe don't like Sirius
    B."dog days"appear earlier in Athens
C."dog days"appear at different time every year
D.people in Europe believe Sirius brings the hottest days
(3)Bradley uses the spinning top in order to

A.explain the movement of the Earth
B.study how the Earth is affected by heat
C.introduce the reason why the Earth moves
D.predict how the Earth will move when it slows down
(4)What's the purpose of the passage?

A.To study the relation of the Earth and Sirius.
B.To explain why hot days are called"dog days".
C.To introduce some information about"dog days".
D.To show the changes of Sirius throughout the years.
