  • 2.Failure is an unavoidable part of life.Though science has named some life skills that promise success,we're told over and over again that no great success was ever achieved without failure—or many failed attempts. One of life's most important lessons, therefore, has to be how to handle failure best. But what is the message?
For starters, ignore advice from anyone that tells you,"Don't beat yourself up about it," no matter how well-meaning they are.According to the new research from the University of Kansas,we absolutely should be beating ourselves up when we fail.Marketing professor Noelle Nelson and her team found that the more emotional a person's response is to failure, the more likely they are to achieve better results the next time they deal with a related task.
The researchers carried out two experiments in which undergraduate students were required to perform specific tasks. In one experiment, they were asked to search online for a squeezer and report the lowest price they could find with the possibility of winning a ﹩50 cash prize. However, the task was controlled, and all participants were told(by a computer)that the lowest price was ﹩3.27 less than their reported price.Consequently,no participant won the cash prize. When the results were announced, some participants were asked to focus on their emotional response, and others on their cognitive(認(rèn)知的)response.During the next similar task, participants who focused on their emotional response to failure made more effort than those who focused on a cognitive response.
Everybody has their own unique challenges, responsibilities, duties, and projects, but these findings are related to all of us.Your personal failure may be a cake that fails to rise,a presentation that goes wrong,or a deadline that gets missed—it doesn't matter. What matters is how you react to it.Instead of thinking about the failure, let yourself feel bad about it.Then follow this advice on how to bounce back after your failure.

(1)What's the relationship between failure and success?

    A.Failure promises success.
B.Failure is the key to success.
    C.Failure does damage to success.
D.Well-handled failure is good for success.
(2)Why does the writer support beating oneself up when failing?

    A.It's a well-meaning suggestion for failure.
B.It's been proved by the study of a university.
C.Being emotional is good for one's future success.
D.It can make people less emotional about failure.
(3)What is the purpose of the two experiments?

A.To test the participants' abilities to search online.
B.To improve the participants' cognitive response.
C.To teach the participants to avoid failures.
D.To test the benefit of emotional response to failure.
(4)Which can be the best title for the passage?

A.Personal Failure Is a Cake That Fails to Appear
B.The Most Productive Way to Handle Any Failure
C.Different Methods to Change Failure into Success
D.The Reason Why Failure Is the Mother of Success

  • 3.Regardless of how far we'd like to believe gender(性別)equality in the workplace has come, there's still a yawning gap between male and female leaders in the professional world.A 2018 statistic shows that women nowadays hold just 5.8 percent of CEOs positions at S&P 500 companies, according to Catalyst.
While it's not a huge shock that women are somewhat underrepresented in leadership positions, what is surprising though,is the fact that females may actually be better suited to lead in almost every area,at least according to new findings from the BI Norwegian Business School.
In their research,Professor Oyvind L.Martinsen and Professor Lars Glas surveyed(調(diào)查)2,900 managers with a special focus on personality types. The results were clear:Women scored higher than men in four of the five major leadership-centric categories.
While some people believe that men inherently make better leaders—probably because they picture a leader with a commanding voice, which is more typical of men than women—this piece of research suggests that women are better at methodical management and goal-setting,openness,sociability and supportiveness,as well as ability to communicate clearly.
There was one area in which men scored higher than women, though, and that was on emotional stability and ability to face job-related pressure and stress. The results suggest that women are more sensitive to the effects of high-pressure or highly emotional situations.
Obviously,it's important to consider individual(個人的)differences.Anyone, regardless of gender, may be an inspiring leader and a competent boss.So next time you're hiring for a management position, you just might want to give the resumes (簡歷) from female candidates a harder look.

(1)What makes us shocked much at leadership positions?

    A.Women are worse than men.
B.Men take almost all high positions.
C.There is a huge gap between genders.
D.Women might behave better in nearly every field.
(2)Which of the following can best replace the underlined word "inherently" in Paragraph 4?

    A.Properly.
    B.Potentially.
    C.Naturally.
    D.Normally.
(3)Which of the following may be the best title of this text?

A.How We Can Figure Out The Boss
B.Why Women Are Better Than Men
C.Why Women Make The Best Bosses
D.How We Can Tell Gender Difference
(4)Who might have special interest in this article?

    A.Job hunters.
    B.Employers.
    C.Employees.
    D.Male bosses.

第二節(jié)(滿分25分)

  • 9.閱讀下面短文,根據(jù)其內(nèi)容寫一篇60詞左右的概要。
Look inside any family home in the evening, and you might see a typical enough scene:Mom and Dad,each on their own laptop or tablet, streaming movies, catching up on work or maybe answering emails on their smartphones.Meanwhile, one child is chatting online with one school friend while texting anojye.air.The other is playing a video game with a friend on the other side of the city at the same time. Each member of the family is totally absorbed in his or her own piece of technology.
According to some experts, the effect of technology on human relationships is worrying as technology becomes a substitute for face-to-face human relationships. It appears to be the case that many people would much rather spend time with their electronic gadgets(電子產(chǎn)品) than with one another.Young people say it is difficult to get their parents' attention and they have to compete with smartphones, tablets and other technology.
However,a report from the Pew Internet and American Life Project offers a more helpful and encouraging view, suggesting that far from replacing human contact, technology can actually better family relationships.Just over half of the 2,253 people surveyed agreed that technology had enabled them to increase their contact with distant family members and 47 percent said it had improved the communication with the people they lived with. Moreover, even the closest members of families need time away from each other at some point to seek their own interests.Family members who might otherwise have sat in separate rooms can now be in the same one while still occupying a different mental space.
Look back at our typical family scene above. Is it any different from four people reading their own books?Or is it driving families apart?Where technology will lead us remains to be seen.Yet there is no need to worry. As a matter of fact how it affects our family relationships depends on our attitude towards technology.

附加題:讀后續(xù)寫

  • 10.閱讀下面材料,根據(jù)其內(nèi)容和所給段落開頭語續(xù)寫兩段,使之構(gòu)成一篇完整的短文。
It was a Saturday afternoon. The color of the sky was changing, first light gray, then dark gray, and finally dark and dense. The wind was blowing heavily, and the trees were swaying in the strong wind.It began to rain cats and dogs.Soon, the road was filled with puddles from the rain.
On such a stormy afternoon,my mother took my five-year-old brother,Christopher, and me to a new big toy store she had read about in the newspaper. "So many toys," the advertisement had shouted in full and flashy color, "that we had to get a huge warehouse to fit them all! "
Christopher and I couldn't have been more excited. We ran across the parking lot, through the cold and biting rain,as fast as our little legs could carry us.We left our mother outside to battle with the frustrating umbrella, which never worked when she wanted it to. "Christine!Take care of your young brother! " Mother shouted at the top of her voice.
"Christine!I'm going to find the Lego section(樂高積木區(qū))!There's a new pirate ship I want, and I have four dollars!Maybe I can buy it! " Christopher exclaimed and ran off excitedly.I only half heard him.I took a right turn and,to my wide-eyed delight, found myself in the midst of the Barbie(芭比) World.
I was studying a Barbie and doing some simple math in my head when suddenly an earthshaking clap of thunder roared from the storm outside.I jumped at the noise, dropping the doll to the floor. The lights flickered(閃爍)once and died, covering everything in a blanket of blackness.Thunder continued to shake the sky and lightning illuminated the store for seconds, casting frightening shadows on my mind.
    注意:續(xù)寫詞數(shù)應(yīng)為150左右。
"Oh no," I thought, "Where's Christopher?"__________.
        "Christine,I'm here."__________.
