  • 1.Tipping customs differ from country to country. You need to know how to tip in the country that you're in when you travel;or you'll leave servers annoyed everywhere you go.Here are just a few guidelines to tipping in different countries.
       Dubai
In Dubai it's a rule for restaurants to charge 10% tip on all restaurant and bar bills. You can add a couple of dirhams(迪拉姆,貨幣單位)to this if you feel like it.Waiters are not paid very much in Dubai,so it is always very appreciated.
       Brazil
There will always be a standard 10% service charge added to your bill, and you won't necessarily have to tip.If you do feel like being generous,an extra 5-10% will really make your server very happy.Just remember to do this as skillfully as possible - Brazilians don't make a big show of this.
       Czech Republic
While locals in the Czech Republic don't leave tips, that doesn't mean you're off the hook.Foreign tourists are definitely expected to leave some kind of tip for service - as long as you're in a high tourist traffic area, like Prague for instance. The standard tip is 10%.
       India
Here it is often considered appropriate for a tourist to tip your server 5-10%.You have to adjust that number by yourself though. This is how the rules go in this country. If the bill is for a small meal and totals less than 300 rupees, tip the full 10%.If the bill is higher, tip towards the 5%.

  • 2.I am Fionn Ferreira,an Irish teenager.I am very delighted to have won $50,000 for my project. My project came about as I was constantly hearing about plastic pollution on the news. And I also see the real effects on our beaches every day.I discovered,to my shock, that at present no filtration(過(guò)濾)for microplastics takes place in any European wastewater treatment centres,so I started looking for a solution.
Seeing that there was none,I decided to investigate further, finally finding a way to use the ferrofluid(鐵磁流體),a liquid which sticks to the plastic allowing it to be removed using magnets. After over 1,000 tests I have proved that my method would remove 87% or higher of microplastics.
I grew up in West Cork,Ireland. My hometown is surrounded by untouched nature. This has been my primary inspiration about how nature works.I soon discovered that science really was in everything. The fact that I lived in such a remote place meant that I had to build my own equipment and lab to conduct tests and experiments.
Inspired by scientists such as Ben Feringa and his work with organic chemistry and nanotechnology(納米技術(shù)),I would like to study chemistry or chemical engineering when finishing my last year of secondary school. Both of these subjects will be suited to me as I really enjoy problem-solving and experiments.
One of the most valuable rewards from the science fair for me is the opportunity to present my work to a group of professional judges.Winning the prize is a great honour to me as this is an acknowledgement of my project and ideas. Also, winning the prize will give my project more attention. There is nothing I would like to see more than my project to be used in addressing microplastics in our oceans worldwide.

(1)What do we know about Fionn?

    A.He is studying at college.
    B.He lives by the sea.
C.He works for a science fair.
    D.He was born in America.
(2)Why did Fionn set up the project?

    A.To purify the polluted air.
    B.To recycle microplastics in cities.
C.To collect plastic wastes in water.
    D.To remove microplastics from water.
(3)Which of the following can be used to describe Fionn?

    A.Competitive.
    B.Creative.
    C.Optimistic.
    D.Humorous.
(4)What is Fionn looking forward to?

A.Seeing his project applied widely in real life.
B.Going to the science fair to get another prize.
C.Attracting more attention to his project.
D.Getting his project acknowledged by the judges.

  • 3.One of the sweetest and smallest banana varieties, the baby banana is also known as the Finger Banana.Just about 3 inches(7.5 cm)long, when ripe,it has a thick, bright yellow peel and pale, creamy, dense flesh. The baby banana is native to Colombia, where it grows on a tree-size plant in bunches of "hands" that may each contain 10 to 12 "fingers" or bananas. The bananas are harvested and shipped while still green.
Because of its small size and sweetness, this little banana is loved by children. As a wholesome (有益健康的) source of complex carbohydrates (碳水化合物),it is a perfect addition to lunchboxes, providing a good energy boost for active kids.Like all bananas,it is loaded with nutrients. It is an excellent source of heart-healthy vitamin B6.In addition, the banana provides a good source of vitamin C,fiber and potassium, which have many health benefits.
In addition to being eaten as it is,the baby banana can be baked, sauteed, broiled,or even grilled, and it is a wonderful addition to fruit salads. For a healthy treat that children, especially, will love, peel one and push a wooden stick into one end.Wrap it tightly in plastic wrap and freeze it until solid.Serve it frozen.
As with all bananas, the baby banana should be purchased while still relatively green.Be sure to select ones with smooth, clean skins.Store them at room temperature.Refrigerating bananas will delay the ripening process. If bananas are ripening too quickly for use, place them in the refrigerator. The skins will turn brown, but the flavor of the fruit will not be affected. To store for longer use,the bananas may be mashed with a little lemon juice and stored in resealable plastic bags in the freezer for up to two months.

(1)From which continent does the baby banana originate?

    A.South America.
    B.Europe.
    C.Asia.
    D.Africa.
(2)What does paragraph 2 mainly tell us about the baby banana?

    A.Its size.
    B.Its function.
    C.Its shape.
    D.Its fingers.
(3)Why does the author mention the frozen baby bananas in paragraph 3?

A.To tell readers they can bring energy to kids.
B.To prove they are the children's favorite fruit.
C.To show readers another good way of eating them.
D.To indicate that the baby bananas will have more nutrients when frozen.
(4)Which of the following is NOT a result of refrigerating bananas?

    A.Their flavor stays the same.
B.They can ripen as soon as possible.
C.Their color can be changed into brown.
D.Their process of ripening can be slowed down.

When Jayce Crowder was in kindergarten,he began noticing that he looked different from his classmates. They had two hands. But he had only one.
It started when one boy teased him.Jayce was in a bad mood. He'd return home in Des Moines,Iowa, with questions:Why am I different? Why me?Why?"He actually told us that he was mad at looking so different from others," said his mother,Cortney Lewis. "That really hurt him." Lewis admitted she didn't know what to do at that point. How could she provide answers to her son's questions when she had never found those answers herself?
A few weeks later,Lewis came home from her job and turned on the TV to a news story about Trashaun Willis,an eighth grader from Washington middle school,Iowa. The boy, then 14,had become an Internetstar after posting videos of his slam dunk(扣籃),and, like Jayce,he was missing most of his left arm.Lewis called Jayce in.He was shocked, staring at one dunk after another.
At the time,it seemed that watching Trashaun would simply be an inspiring moment for Jayce—he'd see a shining role model with a seemingly similar born disability. And had it stayed just that,Lewis would have been happy. But little did she know that a family friend had already reached out to the Des Moines Register, asking the newspaper to help set up a meeting with Trashaun to encourage Jayce and build his confidence.

  • 10.Shared Services Need More Imagination Suppose you need to drill a hole in the wall to hang an item but do not own a power drill. You may regard it as expensive to buy a power drill and consider renting one.Sharing is the solution. The sharing industry is an emerging highly flexible economic network that allows people to share resources, either free or for a fee.The important idea of the sharing industry is that people might only need an item for a relatively short period.
The private part of shared services has been moving towards this area since the beginning of the 1980s,and then the public part has taken note of the benefits and continued for best practice. The United States and Australia among others have had shared services in government since the late 1990s.
With the rise of the sharing industry, the best-known shared bikes and shared cars have got a lot of public attention. This kind of transportation is so environmentally-friendly that it is increasingly popular among people in many cities.
Of course shared services don't need to be limited to machines. The real pay-off in shared services probably lies in renting out smaller, less heavy items. For example,in today's casual environment, you don't need a tie unless you're going to a wedding or a job interview. So some companies, would let you pick up a tie when you needed it and only when you needed it.Another example is an umbrella-sharing service.Since visitors don't want to be carrying umbrellas all the way,it would be cheaper and easier to simply borrow an umbrella on one street corner and drop it off on another.
Recently organizations that have centralized their IT functions have begun to take a close look at the technology services that their IT departments provide for customers, evaluating where it makes sense to provide technology components.E-mall and scanning (掃描) operations were obvious early candidates. Many organizations are now offering their document-intensive operations is a shared service. There is no doubt that people are calling for the expansion of shared services to more and more areas.

    (1)What is the sharing industry?

(2)Why does shared transportation receive attention from people?

(3)Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why.
Shared services are getting increasingly popular for their convenience, but there are still calls for expansion to wider areas because they are currently restricted to machines.

(4)What's the main idea of this passage?
