1.The fourth-grade teacher Tori Nelson allowed one of her students to shave her head in the schoolyard, after bullies(仗勢欺人者) teased him about his own buzz cut(短寸頭發(fā)型).Tori Nelson got the idea after noticing that Matthew Finney,a shy boy from her homeroom at Winlock Miller Elementary School in Washington State, was standing outside his classroom crying and wearing a winter hat.
Ms Nelson could see the back of his neck had been shaved, and since Matthew usually had very thick curly brown hair, she realized that he'd had a haircut over the weekend. She asked him what was wrong, and he said he'd gotten a buzz cut for the summer. But this morning,a fifth grader on the bus made fun of him,and he didn't want to come to class and get teased by other kids.Ms Nelson tried to convince Matthew to come inside, but since school rules prohibited kids from wearing hats indoors he refused - explaining that he was afraid of showing his haircut to the other children in case they also made fun of him.
"Finally I said, 'If you take your hat off and come to class,I'll let you give me a buzz cut too," Ms Nelson told Yahoo Parenting. "I figured it's just hair, and mine is already short anyway.I might as well get it shorter in time for the warm weather."
Matthew excitedly took her up on the offer, and Ms Nelson and another teacher gathered all the fourth graders together during break time.A school employee brought in scissors, which Matthew used to the cheers of his classmates, excitedly watching as their teacher's hair fell away onto the ground in the schoolyard.
"It was a lot of fun for the kids, and it helped Matthew feel better about himself," said Ms Nelson. "You have to do what it takes to reach children.Teaching isn't just about reading and writing;it's about self-worth and accepting differences."

2.Many kids help out around the house with chores(家庭雜務(wù)) such as emptying the dishwasher, putting laundry(洗好的東西) away, and taking out the trash. In exchange, some kids get allowances(補(bǔ)貼) or other rewards such as extra computer time.
But some people do not think that kids should get rewards for doing chores.Susie Walton,a parenting educator and family coach, believes that by rewarding kids, parents are sending a message that work isn't worth doing unless you get something in return."Running any kind of household is a team effort,"Susie said."A home is a living space for everyone in the family. It's important for kids to see that we all have responsibilities in the house, and that families decide together how they want their home to look, and how they are going to keep it looking like everyone wants it to look."
Other people believe that getting a cash allowance or other rewards motivates kids to do chores, and it also teaches them real world lessons about how we need to work to earn money. There are also new applications that give kids points and digital gifts that can be redeemed(兌?。?either online or in the real world. With the ChoreMonster app, kids earn digital points by completing chores that they can turn in for real-life rewards such as extra Xbox time or a trip to the mall."Our goal is to encourage kids to earn rewards,"says Chris Bergman, founder of ChoreMonster."Kids need positive reinforcement (強(qiáng)化) to help motivate them."
What do you think?Should kids be rewarded for doing chores?Or should kids help out around their homes without getting anything in return?

3.For many people who live in cities, parks are an important landscape. They provide a place for people to relax and play sports,as well as a shelter from the often severe environment of a city. What people often overlook is that parks also provide considerable environmental benefits.
One benefit of parks is that plants absorb carbon dioxide and give off oxygen.According to one study,an acre of trees can absorb the same amount of carbon dioxide that a typical car emits in 11,000 miles of driving.Parks also make cities cooler.Scientists have long noted what is called the Urban Heat Island Effect:building materials such as metal and concrete (混凝土) absorb much more of the sun's heat and release it much more quickly than trees and grass.Because city landscapes contain so much of these building materials, cities are usually warmer than surrounding rural areas.Parks and other green spaces help to lessen the Urban Heat Island Effect.
Unfortunately, many cities cannot easily create more parks. However, cities could benefit from many of the positive effects of parks by encouraging citizens to create another type of green space:rooftop gardens. While most people would not think of starting a garden on their roof, human beings have been planting gardens on rooftops for thousands of years. Some rooftop gardens are simple container gardens that anyone can create with the investment (投資) of a few hundred dollars and a few hours of work.
Rooftop gardens provide many of the same benefits as other urban parks and garden spaces, but without taking up the much-needed land.In the summer, rooftop gardens prevent buildings from absorbing heat from the sun, which can significantly reduce cooling bills. In the winter, gardens help control the heat that materials like brick and concrete release so quickly, leading to savings on heating bills.Rooftop vegetables and herb gardens can also provide fresh food for city settlers, making their diets healthier.Rooftop gardens are not only something everyone can enjoy but also a smart environmental investment.
(1)The underlined word "emits" in the second paragraph probably means
A.gives out

A.More building materials.
B.More trees and grass.
C.More parking lots.
D.More rooftop gardens.
(3)When it comes to rooftop gardens, what can be inferred from the passage?
A.They make people much happier.
B.They provide more benefits from urban parks.
C.They help to save money and keep a healthy diet.
D.They have become very popular in recent years.
(4)What's the author's attitude towards rooftop gardens?

When my parents got home, I asked that I could keep the dog. To my surprised and joy, they agreed. Up to now, he has become member of our family and everyone had enjoyed his company.
