  • 12.It's a familiar feeling.Your friend has made the team for Saturday's big game, and you take a certain pleasure in telling him you can't be there to watch him play. You smile, but that voice in you asks, why him and not you?
Envy is a fault that we like to keep secret. It raises its ugly head when we focus on what we want but don't possess now,or we may even wish for and take pleasure in someone losing it.Feelings of unfairness are part of being human, but when you focus on them, you can never get out of your dark emotions. And that makes you feel bad.
So is there a solution? Is there anything you can do to stop the most ungenerous emotions?Well, why not turn envy on its head, and make it the encouragement you need for self-improvement?The best weapon against envy is not to compete where you can't shine, but to do your absolute best where you can.
Start by making peace with yourself, and accept the gifts which make you unique.Make an agreement with yourself to be the best you can be.Then find out exactly the circumstances and qualities in others that start your envy.Is it someone's singing voice, their work promotion or their new car?Envy shows us the things we'd like to have-so make up a plan to earn what's important to you.Sign up for a night class.Start a training program.Give up a treat or two,and start saving for what you want.
And aim for real pleasure in the achievements and good fortune of others.Cheer on your friend when he scores that goal.Enjoy your best friend's wedding day. Then go out and do something special, and make yourself wonderfully proud of you.

(1)The first paragraph is intended to

    A.give examples
    B.tell the main idea

    D.a(chǎn)sk questions
    (2)When envy appears,we actually

    A.ignore its existence
    B.have feelings of unfairness
    C.share it with friends
    D.lose something of our own
(3)What is the best way to help stop envy?

A.Developing your own strengths to the full.
B.Competing for what you are not good at.
C.Forgetting about the things you can't get.
D.Trying to get anything that makes you envy.
(4)How does the author sound in the passage?

    A.Subjective
    B.Objective
    C.Unconcerned
    D.Worried.

  • 13.As her son Cameron sits at his laptop completing a task for his math degree course,Alison Thompson,a full-time mum,is busy helping her daughter Emma (two years younger than Cameron) get dressed. While help has always been available for Emma,Alison and her husband also have to fight to get Cameron the support he needs."People could see that Emma has special needs but because Cameron was doing so well at school, his teachers never thought there was a problem with him."says Alison.
It took Alison and her husband a while to realize their son was different.Cameron's ability didn't become clear until he began primary school.Once he even corrected the teacher when she told the class that zero was the lowest number.Cameron told her she was wrong because there were negative numbers (負(fù)數(shù)).He was four at the time. Now 14-year-old Cameron is at secondary school, studying for a distance learning math degree with the Open University, having sailed through his GCSE at 11 and his A-level at 12,achieving top grades.
Bethany, another daughter of Alison,is bright too but not gifted. She is the one who will remind absent-minded Cameron to put on his coat. She also helps him out in social situations.
Emma attends a specialist school and the family is quick to celebrate her successes too.
"The other day she did up the buttons on her coat, which was real progress,"Alison says.
Late last year the Thompsons took part in a television documentary (紀(jì)錄片) to prove that not all gifted children are the result of extremely ambitious parents.Gifted children need support too,but their lives don't have to be that different.Cameron is an example.

  • 14.    Psychologist George Spilich and colleagues at Washington College in Chestertown,Maryland, decided to find out whether,as many smokers say, smoking helps them to "think and concentrate".Spilich put young non-smokers,active smokers and smokers deprived of cigarettes through a series of tests.
In the first test, each subject sat before a computer screen and pressed a key as soon as he or she recognized a target letter among a grouping of 96.In this simple test, smokers, deprived smokers and non-smokers performed equally well.
The next test was more complex, requiring all to scan sequences of 20 identical letters and respond the instant one of the letters transformed into a different one.Non-smokers were faster, but under the stimulation of nicotine (尼古?。?,active smokers were faster than deprived smokers.
In the third test of short-term memory,non-smokers made the fewest errors, but deprived smokers committed fewer errors than active smokers.
The fourth test required people to read a passage, then answer questions about it.Non-smokers remembered 19 percent more of the most important information than active smokers, and deprived smokers bested those who had smoked a cigarette just before testing.Active smokers tended not only to have poorer memories but also had trouble separating important information from insignificant details.
"As our tests became more complex," sums up Spilich, "non-smokers performed better than smokers by wider and wider margins" He predicts, "smokers might perform adequately at many jobs-until they got complicated.A smoking airline pilot could fly adequately if no problems arose, but if something went wrong, smoking might damage his mental capacity."

(1)What is the purpose of Spilich's experiment?

A.To test if smoking has a positive effect on the mental capacity of smokers.
B.To see whether smoking helps people's short-term memory.
C.To prove that smoking affects people's regular performance.
D.To show how smoking damages people's regular performance.
(2)The underlined word "bested" mostly means
    .
    A.beat
    B.envied
    C.caught up with
    D.made the best of
(3)Which of the following statements is true?

A.Active smokers in general performed better than deprived smokers.
B.Active smokers responded more quickly than the other subjects.
C.Non-smokers were not better than other subjects in performing simple tasks.
D.Deprived smokers gave the slowest responses to the various tasks.
(4)What can we infer from the last paragraph?

A.Smokers should not expect to become airline pilots.
B.Smoking in emergency cases causes mental illness.
C.No airline pilots smoke during flights.
D.Smokers may prove unequal to non-smokers in handling emergency cases.

  • 47.閱讀下面材料,根據(jù)其內(nèi)容和所給段落開(kāi)頭語(yǔ)續(xù)寫(xiě)兩段,使之構(gòu)成一篇完整的短文。
As an only child,Nicole Renae often felt lonely in her youth. But all that changed when she turned ten.For her birthday,Renae's grandmother surprised her with an adorable gray puppy named Chloe. From the very start, the two were inseparable. "She was my best friend," Renae says.Every ounce of love Renae gave, the little dog returned ten times. "She was such a sweet dog," Renae says. "She'd lick (舔) your face forever if you didn't stop her."Whenever she called her name, she jumped three times.
But when Renae was 14,her father got a new job that came with a demanding condition—he'd be working from home, and the house needed to be free of sound distractions. "Chloe liked making sounds," Renae says. "I was just a kid,so I didn't have any choice in the matter.I didn't want to get rid of my dog.I just fet so sick and sad about it." With no easier option, the family took Chloe to a pet shelter.Though they were optimistic that the dog would find a new home with people who loved her, they couldn't know for sure. "I called the pet shelter to try to find out what happened to her," Renae says, "but they couldn't tell me anything. So I never knew."
In time,Renae grew up,got married, and had a child of her own.But her family didn't feel quite complete.Remembering the joy that having a dog had brought her as a kid,Renae wanted her daughter to experience the same. She had it in her mind that she would adopt a puppy, but then one day she saw a post on Facebook about a senior dog that needed a new home. The dog in the photograph looked a lot like Chloe—she was even named Chloe. In an instant it was decided —she would adopt this older dog.
