  • 12.Consider what goes through your mind after you've taken your seat on an airplane. You've not seen the captain, but his or her voice comes over the air. "Hello, this is your captain speaking." Are you about to fly the friendly skies? What you probably don't realize is that you do make quick judgments (判斷) based on very few factors the moment you hear "hello".
Experts have discovered that "hello" carries enough information for listeners to draw judgments about the speakers personality, such as how reliable (可信賴的) he or she is.They recorded 64 students reading a telephone conversation. The word "hello" was then picked from each recording, and 320 different students listened to that word through a computer. The students were asked to score the voices according to personality, including attractiveness and warmth, giving them points from l to 10.Although every voice was played in one third a second, the students formed an opinion quickly.
It is amazing that from such short voices of speech they can get such an obvious impression of a person. And whether it is correct, their impressions are mostly the same as what the other listeners get.The research also suggests that people' impressions are based on the tone (語(yǔ)調(diào)) of voice.Men and women who present the strength of their voices are regarded as more reliable.
The speed with which the students made their judgments makes much sense.Deciding who to trust can be important to your survival. There's no point in listening to someone talk for 5 minutes to decide if they're reliable or not — you could be dead already. The discovery may help improve computer-made voice technologies, experts say.

    A.To present a fact.
    B.To make a prediction.
    C.To introduce a new research.

    A.Making telephone calls.
    B.Playing voices at high speeds.
    C.Picking "hello" from conversations.
D.Listening to and scoring the records of "hello".
(3)What can we do to leave a good first impression?

    A.Make a long speech.
    B.Give powerful voice.
    C.Follow other listeners.
    D.Speak as fast as possible.
(4)What will probably be talked about in the following paragraph?

A.The secret to tallying for 5 minutes.
B.The different ways you say "hello".
    C.The application in voice technologies.
D.The method of listening with attention.

  • 13.A method to transform a commonly thrown-away plastic to a resin (樹(shù)脂) used in 3 D printing could allow making better use of plastic waste,A team of Washington State University researchers developed a simple and efficient way to transform polyactic acid (PLA) (聚乳酸),a bio-based plastic used in products such as filament, plastic silverware and food packaging to high-quality resin.
"We found a way to immediately turn this into something that's stronger and better, and we hope that will provide people with the inspiration to upcycle this stuff instead of just throw it away," said Yu-Chung Chang,a postdoctoral researcher in the WSU School of Mechanical and Materials Engineering and a co-corresponding author on the work. "We made stronger materials just straight out of trash. We believe this could be a great opportunity."
Although it's bio-based,PLA,which is categorized as a number 7 plastic, doesn't bread down easily. It can float in fresh or salt water for a year without degrading (降解).It is also rarely recycled because like many plastics, when it's melted down and re-formed,it doesn't perform as well as the original version and becomes less valuable.
"It's biodegradable and compostable, but once you look into it,it turns out that it can take up to 100 years for it to rot away in a landfill," Chang said. "In reality,it still creates a lot of pollution. We want to make sure that when we do start producing PLA on the million-tons scale,we will know how to deal with it."
While the researchers focused on PLA for the study, they hope to apply the work to polyethylene terephthalate (PET) (滌綸樹(shù)脂),which is more common than PLA and has a similar chemical structure and present a bigger waste problem. They have filed a temporary patent and are working further optimize (優(yōu)化) the process. The researchers ane also looking into other applications for the upcycling method.

(1)What can the method help do according to paragraph 1?

    A.Solve financial crisis.
    B.Change waste into wealth.
    C.Control plastic production.
    D.Determine 3 D printing skills.
(2)What does Yu-Chung Chang think of the method?

    A.Promising.
    B.Unrealistic.
    C.Imaginable .
    D.Common.
(3)Which of the following is a feature of number 7 plastics?

    A.Invaluable to recycle.
    B.Easy to deal with.
    C.Hard to break down.
    D.Difficult to sort out.
(4)What is the text mainly about?

    A.Applications for an upcycling method.
B.A better method to break down plastic.
C.3 D printing with newly found materials.
D.A new way to turn plastic into valuable products.

  • 14.    Working from home has become common, during the course of the pandemic(疫情),leaving many with a newfound appreciation of the freedom and flexibility of working remotely. However, while the traditional idea of an office—a place away from home, typically owned or rented by the business—may have changed, the need for specific office space hasn't.
In fact, this period of working from home has highlighted just how important it is to have a place of work, which is separate from daily family life.Without that, many have noted concerns over a worsened work-life balance.
Perhaps the most distinctive characteristic of the office of the future will be its hybrid solution. It should marry the beneficial parts of a physical company-owned workspace with the benefits of working from home.
As teams have proven their ability to efficiently get their jobs done remotely, employers will be much more open to the flexible approach moving forward. The positive impacts of a physical office on things like company culture, communication, team spirit and shared knowledge should not be ignored, which is why tangible space is still very much a necessity.
The solution for the future will enable employees to come into the company's workplace in order not to miss out on these valuable office benefits, but also work from home when required for a better work-life balance. Both large and smaller companies have already started to adopt this new approach, allowing teams to create schedules for when they will be working from home,or even use an online booking system to secure a desk space in the shared facility. This way,the company can manage the number of people in the office at one time, meaning spaces can be downsized to save costs, and social distancing and thorough cleaning procedures can be maintained.

(1)What is the potential problem with working from home?

    A.Imbalance between work and life.
B.Change of the idea of an office.
C.Lack of working space at home.
D.Too much freedom in remote work.
(2)What does the underlined word "tangible" in paragraph 4 mean?

    A.Empty.
    B.Separate.
    C.Physical.
    D.Flexible.
(3)What can be inferred about the new office style from paragraph 5?

A.It is well received by companies.
B.It limits the number of employees.
    C.It makes thorough cleaning unnecessary.
D.It is helpful for workers to design schedules.
(4)What is the best title for the text?

    A.Social Distance:A Pressing Need
    B.Working Remotely:A Growing Trend
C.Traditional Office:To Leave or to Stay
    D.Hybrid Workplace:Office of the Future
