1.On many travelers' lists of things to do before they die, you'll find "See the northern lights" written down.Rightfully so-these lights are one of nature's most jaw-dropping views.
In Sweden, the northern lights usually appear from late March or early April.Your best chance of catching a glimpse of them is on cold winter nights when the sky is clear, dark with little to no moonlight, and cloudless. You need to be away from city lights and go to the countryside. For those willing to brave the cold on winter nights, here are some of the best locations.
Abisko National Park
Abisko National Park is a main location. The scientifically confirmed "blue hole"-a piece of sky over the Tornetrask lake that usually remains clear despite cloudy weather nearby一 gives Abisko its own microclimate(局部地區(qū)氣候),which is suitable for catching the lights.
Jukkasjarvi
The village of Jukkasjarvi only has about 550 people. But don't let the small population size fool you:Jukkasjarvi owns the world's first ice hotel and is one of the best places to view the northern lights. The ice hotel organizes guided tours for guests to the Esrange Space Center. There you can eat at a camp outside and see the Arctic winter sky for aurora borealis(北極光).Or why not try to get closer to the northern lights and watch them through an aeroplane window? The ice hotel arranges flights for the amazing northern lights experience.
Gallivare
You can drive a snowmobile to the mountain top in Gallivare for a private light show,or head a few kilometers to nearby villages to watch those lights shining across the dark winter sky.But remember-if you do get the chance to see the northern lights in person, never whistle to them.According to ancient Sumi fairy,it brings you bad luck.

2.There was something in the elderly woman's behavior that caught my eye.Although slow and unsure of step, the woman moved with deliberation, and there was no hesitation in her gestures. She was as good as anyone else, her movements suggested. And she had a job to do.
The elderly woman had walked into the store along with a younger woman who I guessed was her daughter. The daughter was displaying a serious case of impatience, rolling her eyes, huffing and sighing, checking her watch every few seconds. If she had possessed a belt, her mother would have been fastened to it as a means of dragging her along to keep step with the rush of other shoppers.
The older woman detached(分開) from the younger one and began to glance over the DVDs on the nearest shelf. After the slightest hesitation,I walked over and asked if I could help her find something. The woman smiled up at me and showed me a title written on a piece of paper. The title was unusual and a bit unfamiliar.Clearly a person looking for it knew a little about movies, about quality.
Rather than rushing off to locate the DVD for the woman,I asked her to walk with me so I could show her where she could find it.Looking back,I think I wanted to enjoy her company for a moment.Something about her deliberate movements reminded me of my own mother, who'd passed away the previous Christmas.
As we walked along the back of the store,I narrated its floor plan:old television shows, action movies, cartoons, science fiction. The woman seemed glad of the unrushed company and casual conversation.
We found the movie, and I complimented her on her choice. She smiled and told me it was one she'd enjoyed when she was her son's age and that she hoped he would enjoy it as much as she had.Maybe, she said with a hint of eagerness,he could enjoy it with his own young children. Then, reluctantly,I had to return the elderly woman to her keeper, who was still tapping her foot at the front of the store.
I accompanied the older woman to the queue at the cash register and then stepped back and lingered near the younger woman. When the older woman's turn in line came, she paid in cash, counting out the dollars and coins with the same sureness she'd displayed earlier.

3.The story of O.Henry, whose real name was William Sidney Porter, could almost be an O.Henry story. He had a secret and spent most of his adult life trying to hide it.
The pen name was part of that effort, but Porter also avoided being photographed, rarely gave interviews, and stayed away from situations where someone might pry(窺探)into his past.
His early life was unsettled. At nineteen,he worked as a pharmacist.Soon afterward,he moved to Texas. He later published a number of stories set in the West. Then disaster struck. He took a job as d teller(出納員)in the First National Bank of Austin.In1894,a federal bank examiner discovered a shortage of$5,654 in the bank's accounts, and accused Porter of embezzlement(盜用公款).
It was natural to assume that Porter had borrowed the money to keep his struggling magazine out of debt, intending to pay it back.On the few occasions,he implied that he was covering for someone else, but he never said who it was.Eventually,he was sentenced to five years in prison. And that is the secret he spent the rest of his life trying to hide-even from his daughter.
In prison,Porter wrote fourteen stories and began using O.Henry as a pen name.In 1902,he moved to New York where he began producing at an astonishing rate.In 1904 alone,he published sixty-six stories. He began bringing out collections in 1906"The Four Million'',which contains some of his most famous works: "The Gift of the Magi" and "The Cop and the Anthem".
Financially,he led the hand-to-mouth existence of most full-time writers, even very successful ones.Despite his rate of production,Porter found writing stressful and had trouble with deadlines. He was frank about the fact that he wrote for the income. When he started getting paid more for his stories,he wrote fewer of them.Suffering from several health problems,he died in 1910 at forty seven. He was begging his editor for payment in advance right up to the end.

The Feel-Good Shoebox Catherine sat on her bed with her chin in her hands. "Why aren't you getting ready for Grandma's birthday party?" asked Mother.
"I can't bake like Sylvia or knit like Anne," Catherine grumbled. "They made good presents. All I made for her is an ugly card." "It's a lovely card. And no one can be good at everything," said Mother. She sat on the bed next to Catherine. "When I was your age,I felt sad when I couldn't do certain things. But one day Grandma showed me the shoebox game, and it made me feel a lot better." Catherine frowned(皺眉). "How can a shoebox make me feel better?""You'll see," said Mother. She disappeared down the hall, then came back carrying a shoe box,a pencil, paper, and scissors.
Catherine watched as Mother cut several pieces of paper into squares. "Now,I want you to write down all the things you can do," said Mother. "Like what?" asked Catherine. "Why not start with things you've learned in school?Give it some thought while I ice Grandma's birthday cake."
Catherine sat for a while wrinkling(起皺紋)and unwrinkling her eyebrows.Slowly Catherine began to write and write. Before long she had written on every square of paper. She was so busy that she didn't hear Mother come into the room."My goodness!" said Mother."Do you think they'll all fit in the shoebox?""I hope so," said Catherine. "It was fun thinking of all the stuff I can do.""And the next time you feel sad because you can't do something, your feel-good shoebox will remind you of how much you can do-just as mine did when I was a little girl," said Mother,"Now let's finish getting dressed for Grandma's party."
