  • 菁優(yōu)網(wǎng)1.Baby sign language is a growing movement.Pointing to a colorful flower,Tricia Campbell lifts her baby's soft hand, and rapidly moves it from one side of his nose to the other as she sniffs (嗅) loudly."Flower!"she says loudly.Gregory smiles, looks carefully and says happily, "Flower!"It could be a year before Gregory,4 months old,can speak, but now his mother hopes to communicate with her baby through sign language.
Like others around the world,Campbell is part of a growing movement of parents teaching hearing babies simple signs to communicate before they can talk. The baby sign language has been more popular in recent years. The movie,"Meet the Fockers",where Robert De Niro's character teaches his young grandson to sign, makes it well developed.
Babies generally begin to talk between 12 and 15 months, but babies can use sign language to communicate before they learn how to speak.
"They are understanding words before they are able to say them. From around 16 to 18 months, they might say 50 words but understand 200.They understand short sentences well."says McRoberts.
Studies have shown deaf children learn to use sign language earlier than hearing children learn to speak meaningfully. As to whether hearing babies can communicate earlier with sign language,McRoberts says,"I think that's still unknown. It may not.I'm very interested in that very question."

  • 2.The most difficult thing for university student Shaun Rogers is opening his classroom door.Shaun can't do this without help because he's only six years old. He's the youngest person ever to study at Rochester University in New York.Shaun began reading at two,by the age of five he was regularly corresponding (通信) with university professors and will shortly complete his first book, "I love learning," says Shaun."My hero is the scientist Albert Einstein because he never combed his hair or wore socks."
Psychologists (心理學(xué)家) have found it difficult to test Shaun's intelligence (智力) because it goes beyond what they usually measure.Shaun's mother first realized her son was different when he kept crying at play school because he was bored with the children's games. She started teaching him at home after finding that local schools were not prepared for children who learnt at Shaun's speed. Now Shaun is studying geography at Rochester University and using the Internet to complete his high school studies.
However, some psychologists warn that too much study can prevent a child from developing normally."I don't care how brilliant the kid is,six-year-olds have to play with their friends,"says Dr Brian Wood.Mrs Rogers disagrees that her son's time is completely taken up by school work."He loves the violin and has many outdoor interests, such as camping, fishing and swimming, just like other boys of his age."

  • 3.A device that stops drivers from falling asleep at the wheel is about to undergo testing at Department of Transport laboratories and could go on sale within 12 months.
The system, called Driver Alert, aims to reduce deadly road accidents by 20%~40% that are caused by tiredness.Airline pilots can also use it to reduce the 30% if all pilot-error accidents that are related to fatigue.
Driver Alert is based on a computerized wristband. The device, worn by drivers, gives out a sound about every four minutes during a car journey. After each sound the driver must respond by squeezing the steering wheel (方向盤).A sensor in the wristband detects this pressing action and measures the time between the sound and the driver's response.
Tiredness is directly related to a driver's response time.Usually,a watchful driver would take about 400 milliseconds to respond, but once that falls to more than 500 milliseconds,it suggests that the driver is getting sleepy.
In such cases the device gives out more regular and louder sounds, showing that the drivers should open a window or stop for a rest.If the driver's response continues to slow down, the sounds become more frequent until a nonstop alarm warns that the driver must stop as soon as possible.
The device has been delivered to the department's laboratories for testing. If these tests, scheduled for six months' time, are successful, the makers will bring the product to market within about a year.

    (1)According to the text,Driver Alert

    A.a(chǎn)ims to reduce tiredness-related accidents
B.has gone through testing at laboratories
C.a(chǎn)ims to prevent drivers from sleeping
D.has been on sale for 12 months
(2)How should a driver respond to the sounds from Driver Alert?

    A.By sounding a warning.
    B.By touching the wristband.
    C.By checking the driving time.
    D.By pressing the steering wheel.
(3)We can learn from the text that the driver needs to stop for a break when his response time is

    A.a(chǎn)bout 400 milliseconds
    B.below 500 milliseconds
    C.over 500 milliseconds
    D.a(chǎn)bout 4 minutes
