  • 2.An elderly couple in the UK claimed that they were held hostage by a pair of seagulls nesting on the roof of their home.Every time they tried to leave, the birds would become aggressive and attack them.
One time, when Roy Pickard, the 71-year-old husband, decided to take his chances and go outside,he was hit so hard on the back of the head that he had to be taken to the hospital for help.Local authorities have installed a gazebo outside the couple's home, which should offer some protection. That's the best they can do for now.
"The whole thing has been terrible," Roy old reporters. "I've not been able to go out of the front door.If I try to get out of the door, the two adult birds are right there, and I've got no chance. It's really frightening. My wife isn't well at the moment,so we're relying on me to get out." Luckily, the Pickards' garage is connected to their house and he can get out through there when he needs to do some shopping, but he doesn't dare get out of the car to close the garage door,so he always leaves it open until he comes back.
Roy has complained about the situation to both the local authorities and animal organizations like the RSPCA and RSPB,but their solutions have not been very helpful. The Wyer Council says that seagulls are protected while nesting,so all they can do is try to make the couple's life bearable by installing a gazebo and making arrangements so that the 77-year-old wife,Brenda, can reach her private appointments safely.Unfortunately, animal organizations wouldn't help the Pickards either. For now,all they can do is wait for the chicks to fly away. • 3.If you follow luxury resorts (度假勝地) or travel influencers online, chances are that you've seen at least one "floating breakfast".Floating breakfasts are a typical pricey hotel room service breakfast—think toast, fruit, coffee and the like—served in a pool or hot bathtub instead of in bed.Usually, they're placed on large plates or colorful baskets, and then decorated with bright flowers.
These breakfasts are particularly popular in Asia and the Pacific, especially at warm-weather private villa resorts in places like Thailand and Fiji.Nearly everyone agrees that the trend began in Bali.
Are these breakfasts just made to be shared online,or do people genuinely enjoy eating them?James Booth,a reporter, admits wondering the same thing before trying one at a resort in Bali.
Though Booth had pre-scheduled a specific time for the breakfast to arrive,he ended up oversleeping about 20 minutes, meaning he had missed the perfect time to enjoy it.The food was already getting cold. The hotel's staff had wisely placed the trays (托盤) in a separate section of the pool, but he moved them into the larger area to stage the scene. That ended up in trays floating off in different directions.
"I was too embarrassed to ask for help," he admits, "so I spilled everything everywhere. The coffee had a bit of pool water in it,and the bread was wet." Still,Booth was careful to put the blame on himself. "I think it's a bit violent to jump into the water first when you wake up," he says.
"Anyway, the floating breakfast has quickly become another luxury hotel service, like afternoon tea. Many travelers have also accepted floating breakfasts," said Timo Kuenzli, general manager of Cape Fahn Hotel. "Nearly 100% of our guests over the past year have ordered one.Floating meals have seemingly gone from fashion to mainstream."

(1)What can we infer about floating breakfasts from Paragraph 1?

    A.They look appealing.
    B.They are delicious.
    C.They are nutritious.
    D.They are low-calorie diets.
(2)Why is the question raised in Paragraph 3?

    A.To make a summary.
    B.To further explore the topic.
    C.To share some confusion.
    D.To bring on some argument.
(3)How does Booth like his first attempt at having a floating breakfast?

    A.Attractive.
    B.Boring.
    C.Funny.
    D.Terrible.
(4)What do Timo Kuenzli's words show?

A.The safety of floating breakfasts is uncertain.
B.Many people can't accept floating breakfasts.
C.Floating breakfasts have gradually become popular.
D.Floating breakfasts are not as popular as afternoon tea.

  • 9.閱讀下面材料,根據(jù)其內(nèi)容和所給段落開頭語續(xù)寫兩段,使之構(gòu)成一篇完整的短文。
I sat at the breakfast table with my four-year-old son,Matthew trying to ignore the ache in my stomach. "Mama, want to play? " "Not today, baby, " I shook my head. These days I could barely get out of bed.I was still recovering from a surgery.I hoped for strength and happiness. But the future seemed so hopeless.
Suddenly,Matthew jumped up from his spot on the kitchen floor. "Bird! " he shouted, rushing to our courtyard.Sure enough, there was a white dove seated in a rubber tree.It sat there for a few moments, and then flew away.Strange,I'd never seen one in our neighborhood before.
When I dragged myself to the kitchen the next morning, the dove was back. This time with a mate carrying twigs(細(xì)枝) "Look,Matthew, " I said, pointing to the tree. "They 're going to make a nest. " The doves flew in and out of the courtyard all week, building on top of the rubber tree.Matthew could hardly contain his excitement.Every morning,he'd run into the kitchen and take his spot by the sliding glass door, talking to the birds while they worked. His enthusiasm was influential. As much as I was grieving,I couldn't help but look forward to the doves' visits too.
Then it all went wrong. The courtyard was a safe enough spot for a nest, but the rubber tree's broad, thin leaves were far from stable. One night,a strong wind blew, throwing the doves' nest to the ground.I heard the twigs break apart.
I surveyed the damage.Nothing good ever lasts.I wouldn't blame the doves if they never came back. But they returned. And they paid no attention to the pile of sticks (枝條) that had once been their nest. They started again from scratch (抓,刨,撓).Again, though, the wind destroyed all their hard work. The next day,and the next, they renewed their efforts,as if nothing had happened.
