  • 12.In 2007,Bianca Valenti had an experience which nearly killed her. When she surfed (沖浪) at Ocean Beach in San Francisco, she met a wave as tall as a two-story house.
The wind was strong enough to block my vision. The moment I went under water,I was just getting knocked and spun (旋轉(zhuǎn)) every which way.And then my feet touched the sand bottom there. When I swam to the surface,my lungs were burning painfully.I just thought to myself, "If there's one more wave after this,I'm going to die." Luckily there wasn't another wave. That was when Valenti knew she had the drive and skill to surf big waves.
By 2014,Valenti surfed and won her first big waves contest (比賽) at Nelscott Reef in Oregon. There, she met fellow professionals Alms,Moller, and Kennelly. "One thing got me fired up at that point," she said. "I wanted to have the opportunity to win more events, but there weren't more events for women. That's really annoying." Luckily,Valenti,Alms,Moller, and Kennelly decided to stick together, support each other, and then fight together.
The four surfers formed Committee for Equity in Women's Surfing (CEWS) to fight for entrance at Mavericks-a contest set in the surfing location of the same name, north of Half Moon Bay.Mavericks was invitation-only and was open to only men when CEWS was formed. Now,through the organization's hard work with the State of California, women are allowed to surf in the event.
When Valenti was young, there weren't many women represented in surfing culture. "I think it's important for young kids to have all kinds of role models. That way they know all the people who they see as superheroes are just normal people who have crazy dreams. And sometimes the dreams aren't even that crazy. If you work hard and you stick together with your friends, you can do anything. You can move mountains."

A.Her gift in learning surfing skills.

  • 13.For generations, people have dreamed of travelling to Mars to explore Earth's closest neighbour.NASA and other space agencies have announced plans to send people to the Red Planet. But such a manned mission is years away.
In the United States, some volunteers are learning how people will react to months of separation from other humans on a Mars base. What would it be like to live on the planet Mars?Six volunteers are isoiated high on top of Mauna Loa,a volcanic mountain on the Big Island of Hawaii. They are living on a simulated(模仿的),or make-believe,Mars Base.
The project called HI-SEAS is in the charge of Kim Binsted. She says this wild environment is as close to Mars as you can find on Earth.Because it is so high, the land is not warm or rich with plants, like the rest of Hawaii.
"You will see there is really no visible piant life or animal life. And you have got this wonderful volcanic material."
Mauna Loa,2,500 metres above sea level,is geologically very similar to Olympus Mons on Mars. When measured from its base, deep in the ocean,Mauna Loa is the second largest mountain in our solar system, after the one on Mars.
Kim Binsted says this experiment looks at how the volunteers interact,or get along with each other. "We study how well they work together, how we can keep them happy and supported, and not wanting to kill each other over these long durations(時期)."
The six-member HI-SEAS crew is mostly self-sufficient.Sometimes,food and other supplies are brought to them. But the individuals bringing those supplies cannot communicate with volunteers inside the habitat,or base.Crew members communicate with the outside world through e-mail and blogs. They also produce videos on the YouTube website.
"I am really enjoying this opportunity to live in this dome and pretend that I'm on Mars and get to learn all sorts of new skills." one of them said.
"Whoever gets there first, the trip will not be easy." says Kim Binsted. "It is going to be challenging."

(1)What is the purpose of the experiment?

    A.To improve humans' living ability.
B.To explore a new island in Hawaii.
C.To monitor signs of volcanic activity.
D.To prepare for a space mission to Mars.
(2)What do we know about Mauna Loa?

A.It has warm climate and various plants.
B.It is 2,500 meters from its base in the sea.
C.It is the second largest mountain on Mars.
D.Its wild environment is similar to that on Mars.
(3)How can crew members keep in touch with the outside world?

    A.By telephone.
    B.By Internet.
    C.By letter.
    D.By fax.
(4)What might be the best title for the passage?

    A.Volunteers First Explore Mars.
    B.Volunteers Experience Life in Hawaii.
C.Volunteers Get a Taste of Mars in Hawaii.
D.Volunteers Study the Environment on Mars.

  • 14.In a natural disaster-a hurricane, flood, volcanic eruption,or other catastrophes-minutes and even seconds of warning can make the difference between life and death.Because of this, scientists are working to use the latest technological advances to predict when and where disasters will happen. They are also studying how best to analyze and communicate this information once it is obtained.
On September 29,1998,Hurricane Georges made landfall in Biloxi,Mississippi, after damaging Haiti, the Dominican Republic,Puerto Rico, and several islands of the Caribbean badly with torrential rains and winds up to 160km per hour.Few people lost their lives along the Gulf Coast of the United States, although hundreds died in the Caribbean.
This was a very different outcome from 1900,when a powerful Gulf Coast hurricane made an unexpected direct hit on Galveston,Texas, killing at least 6,000 people.
Vastly improved hurricane warnings explain the different circumstances at either end of the 20th century--residents of Galveston had no advance warning that a storm was approaching, while residents of Biloxi had been warned days in advance, allowing for extensive safety precautions (預(yù)防).
At the same time that people in Biloxi were thankful for the advance warning, some residents of New Orleans,Louisiana were less satisfied.A day before Georges made landfall, forecasters were predicting that the hurricane had a good chance of striking New Orleans.Because much of New Orleans lies below sea level, the city is at risk for flooding.Emergency management officials must begin evacuations (疏散)well before a storm strikes. But evacuation costs money:businesses close, tourists leave, and citizens take precautionary measures. The mayor of New Orleans estimated that his city's preparations for Georges cost more than 50 million. After Georges missed New Orleans, some residents questioned the value of the hurricane forecasts in the face of such high costs.
The different views on the early warnings for Hurricane Georges show some of the complexities related to predicting disasters.Disaster prediction is a process of providing scientific information to the government officials and other decision makers who must respond to those predictions.

(1)What is the purpose of disaster prediction according to the passage?

A.To identify the cause of disasters.
B.To save people's lives and property.
C.To prevent natural disasters from happening,
D.To apply advanced technology to disaster prediction.
(2)Which of the following areas suffered the most severe damage?

    A.Puerto Rico.
    B.New Orleans.
    C.Biloxi,Mississippi.
    D.Galveston,Texas.
(3)The city residents of New Orleans were unsatisfied because
    _.
A.their preparations were made in vain
B.the hurricane warning arrived rather late
C.the forecast hurricane did not hit the city
D.they suffered from a heavy hurricane attack
(4)What does the passage mainly talk about?

A.The different ways of disaster prediction.
    B.Technological advances in disaster prediction.
C.The benefits and preparations of disaster prediction.
D.The importance and uncertainty of disaster prediction.
