2.Mario's tired feet carried him up the narrow metal staircase to the upper deck. With his lantern in hand,he checked the living-room and the dining hall, but his father was nowhere to be seen. Most of the men had retired to their bedrooms for the night. The surest place to find him was the captain's library. His father kept scores of books at home, but had packed only a few favorite ones in his luggage. Some evenings he liked to sit in the ship's library, buried in heavy,salt-stained books about the places they would soon visit.
Mario walked his way through the dark corridor(走道),guided only by the light from his lantern.Suddenly,he heard a funny sound like a held-back sneeze,he thought. He turned around, looking for the source, but he couldn't see anyone else.Shrugging,he continued down the hall until - "Achoo!" A real sneeze erupted in the narrow hall.
"Who's there?" Mario called. There was no answer.Maybe those girls were playing a trick on him, trying to scare him.Holding his light high,he began to search the walls, looking for a door or window where someone might be hiding. There was only a narrow fireplace. He lifted his lantern and looked into the darkness beyond. When his light reflected in two dark eyes,he sprang back with a scream.
"Who are you? What are you doing in there?" he cried.
After a long silence,a whisper came through the fireplace. "Don't tell anyone, please, sir.I boarded the ship to escape my cruel step-father,but if they find me,they will send me back to him,or make a slave of me,or worse!"
Mario's fear disappeared as the boy spoke. "I'm Mario," he offered. "What's your name?"
"Benito," the boy replied.
"Come out,Benito." Mario insisted. "My father would never let anyone harm jye.ai.You must be starving.Come out,and we'll have apples and bread, and you can sleep in our bedroom." More long moments followed as the boy considered his situation. Finally he climbed out of the fireplace and stood on his unsteady legs.

3.England and Wales launched a COVID-19 smartphone app on Thursday,October 5th,allowing users to track contacts, check the local level of risk and record visits to venues such as pubs, four months after the technology was promised to the public.
The NHS COVID-19 app comes as Britain braces for a second wave of infections, with daily case numbers rising at rates not seen since the peak of the pandemic and a testing system unable to deal with demand in many areas.
The government had said a COVID-19 app would arrive in May,but early trials were dogged by problems, and developers abandoned home-grown technology in favor of models in other countries in June.As the delay lengthened, the government played down the importance of smartphones in fighting COVID-19,saying that rather than an app being central to the test and tracking system,it was "the cherry on the cake".
Health Secretary Matt Hancock, however, said that with infection rates rising, every tool available must be used to prevent transmission, including the latest technology. "We have worked extensively with tech companies, international partners, and privacy and medical experts - and learned from the trials - to develop an app that is secure, simple to use and will help keep our country safe," he said.
The app uses Bluetooth signals to log when a user is in close contact with another user, generally meaning within two meters for 15 minutes or more.If someone then tests positive for COVID-19,they can choose to share the result anonymously (匿名的)with their close contacts, who will each receive a warning and will have to isolate for 14 days. The app generates a random ID for each user to protect privacy, and matches cases on the device rather than on a central server. It will also enable users to book a COVID-19 test subject to availability, check symptoms, and register at venues using a QR-type bar code displayed by businesses.
People aged over 16 will be encouraged to download the app by advertisements with the line: "Protect your loved ones.Get the app." Britain has recorded 6,178 new coronavirus cases on Wednesday, which is close to the highest ever daily total, recorded in early May.
(1)Why was the launch of the NHS COVID-19 app delayed?
A.The early experiments didn't go on smoothly.
B.The British government abandoned the system.
C.People didn't want their privacy to be exposed.
D.They faced competition from foreign countries.
(2)What does the underlined phrase "the cherry on the cake" in paragraph 3 imply?
A.The App is not the most essential.
B.The symbol of the App is a cherry.
C.The cherry on the cake is greatly valued.
D.Cherries are popular decoration on cakes.
(3)What is the function of the NHS COVID-19 app?
A.It helps users to book a test by using Bluetooth.
B.It uploads information of patients to a central server.
C.It informs people when their close contacts test positive.
D.It enables people to register to hospitals using QR codes.
(4)What's Matt Hancock's attitude to this kind of technology?
A.Opposed.
B.Unconcerned.
C.Doubtful.
D.Supportive.組卷:9引用:1難度:0.5

Through our lives,we can gain a lot and lose so much. But being honest should always be with us,as honesty is always regarded as a virtue.Every time I talk about the topic, something crowds in my mind as if it had just happened.
I was 16 when one morning,Dad told me I could drive him to Mijas and then take the car in a nearby garage to get it serviced. At that time,I had just passed the driving test, and I hardly had a chance to use the car,so I said yes without hesitation.
I drove my father to Mijas, promising to pick him up again at 4 PM,then I went to a nearby garage, and put the car in there.Since I had several hours to spare,I decided to go to a movie theater near the garage to see the movie. However,I was so absorbed in the plot of the movie that I forgot the time. When the last movie finished,I looked at my watch:6 PM.I was two hours late!
I thought my father would be very angry if he knew what I was doing. And he would never let me drive again. So I decided to make up an excuse. Then,I drove to the appointed place,my father was sitting in a corner, waiting patiently.I first apologized for being late, then told him that I wanted to get there as soon as possible, but that something was wrong with some of the main parts of the car.I would never forget the way he looked at me. "I'm very disappointed that you thought you had to lie to me,Jason." My father looked at me again and said, "When you didn't show up on time,I called the gas station and asked if there was anything wrong. They told me you never picked up the car. So,you see,I know there's nothing wrong with the car at all."
