  • 1.Money with no strings attached. It's not something you see every day.But at Union Station in Los Angeles last month,a board went up with dollar bills attached to it with pins and a sign that read,"Give What You Can,Take What You Need."
People quickly caught on.And while many took dollars, many others pinned their own cash to the board. "People of all ages, races, and socio-economic(社會(huì)經(jīng)濟(jì)的)backgrounds gave and took," said Tyler Bridges of The Toolbox, which created the project. "We even had a bride in her wedding dress come up to the board and take a few dollars." Most of the bills on the board were singles, but a few people left fives, tens and even twenties. The video clip(片段)shows one man who had found a ﹩20 bill pinning it to the board.
"What I can say for the folks that gave the most,is that they were full of smiles," Bridges said. "There's a certain feeling that giving can do for you and that was apparent in those that gave the most. " Most people who took dollars took only a few,but Bridges said a very small number took as much as they could.
While the clip might look like part of a new ad campaign,Bridges said the only goal was to show generosity and sympathy. He added that he hopes people in other cities might try similar projects and post their own videos on the Internet.
"After all, everyone has bad days and good days," he said. "Some days you need a helping hand and some days you can be the one giving the helping hand."

  • 2.Mathilda,15,is Turkana,a native people that has survived by raising cattle in a semiarid (半干旱) region.Mathilda's school, like most schools in the area, doesn't have access to clean water and sanitation facilities for its students. So instead of spending their whole school day learning,Mathilda and her classmates start their day by spending two hours to the closest river fetching water---water that is anyway most likely not safe to drink. They do the same thing again in the afternoon,so they often lose around half of their school day fetching water.
Mathilda has to do the same thing outside of school hours to get the water her family needs at home, leaving her little time for studying.Because of rising temperatures, water has become harder and harder to find here, and people have to spend more and more time trying to find it.
This is just one small example of how climate change is making it harder to realize people's rights to water, education and security.Unfortunately, most higher-income countries remained silent on the issue.
This is despite studies showing that communities already facing marginalization(邊緣化),such as women and children, mostly suffer from climate change. This is especially the case for those in countries with limited resources and fragile ecosystems.
Meanwhile, women consist of the majority of the world's poor, and so are more dependent for their livelihood on natural resources that are threatened by climate change. And around the world, women and girls are the most likely to be responsible for fetching water for their families.
This exposes them to danger and leaves them with less time to attend school, earn money,or simply to rest. But the fact is that the effects of climate change will be felt globally.
Despite the difficulties she is facing, trying to get an education,Mathilda says she hopes to serve her community in a leadership role when she grows up.
"All of the world's leaders need to work together to solve this problem that we are all facing,"she said.
    (1)Mathilda has to spend
    fetching water every school day.
    A.two hours
    B.four hours
    C.more than four hours
    D.a(chǎn)lmost a whole day
(2)The first two paragraphs are intended to tell us

A.the cause and effect of lack of water
B.one serious consequence of climate change
C.the difficulties in fetching water in the semiarid region
D.the hardship of life for the people in the semiarid region
(3)We can conclude from the passage that

    A.climate change is everyone's business
B.water is becoming rare because of rising temperatures
C.fetching water takes up Mathilda's half of studying time
D.females are more responsible for fetching water for their families
(4)The passage is mainly about the problem caused by

    A.rising temperatures
    B.fetching water
    C.climate change
    D.water shortage.

  • 3.Dogs are our best friends. That's especially true after a disaster, such as an earthquake. When buildings fall
down,search-and-rescue dogs help find trapped people.Dogs' amazing noses can pick up the smell of survivors. Now scientists have developed an electronic tool that does the same thing. It's taking smell detection(探測(cè)) to a whole new level.
The new invention is a sort of electronic nose, which can detect extremely low levels of many compounds(化合物) from people's skin. This isn't the first time engineers have developed such an object.Earlier models, however, have been bulky and expensive. They could not detect low levels of target compounds eijye.air.The new one is inexpensive and small enough to fit inside hand-held equipment.
The electronic nose can detect extremely slight smell of more than one compound at the same time."Being
able to do this,in such a small object,is the significant discovery,"says Sotiris E.Pratsinis,Professor of Process Engineering and Materials Science at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich. His team tested it in special spaces. They were like the small spaces where people might be trapped.Chemicals given off by the volunteers built up inside. The electronic equipment detected those compounds at unbelievably low levels.
The results were good news for the research team. But they may be not for our four-legged friends, who could soon be out of a job. "Ideally, this technology could replace search-and-rescue dogs," Pratsinis says.
Stephen Taylor,an electrical engineer, agrees that the new technology has some benefits over dogs.Still,he thinks it may be too soon to have our trusty friends retire. He suspects, "I foresee that such an object could add to the fine work done by the dogs." Taylor also points out some potential limitations of the new invention "E-noses are useful, but can be very likely to be affected by unstable readings and interruption," he says.

(1)Why does the author talk about dogs at the beginning?

    A.To catch the readers' attention
B.To introduce the topic about e-noses.
C.To show what search-and-rescue dogs do.
D.To add background information for discussion.
(2)Which of the following best explains "bulky" underlined in Paragraph 2?

    A.Complex.
    B.Fragile.
    C.Handy.
    D.Large.
(3)What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?

    A.What e-noses' working principle is.
    B.How e-noses are made.
C.What differences between dogs and e-noses are.
    D.How powerful e-noses are.
    (4)What does Stephen Taylor mean?

A.Dogs and e-noses could work together.
    B.Search-and-rescue dogs will retire soon.
C.E-noses are more reliable than noses of dogs.
D.Dogs are better at finding out trapped people.

It was time to go home. "Remember to work on your class speeches for homework," Miss Walker called as everyone started talking and packing their school bags.Jenny felt sick. She hated having to read aloud in class. She was sure everyone got really bored listening to her.Once, when Jenny was reading out her holiday diary,Lee was even looking at his watch,a silver and blue one which seemed just magical.
Jenny watched Lee walk ahead of her as they left school. He seemed so clever, and he had a certain sort of shining confidence. He was just one of those people who were good at everything.Jenny sighed. As she turned the corner, she saw Lee's watch lying right in the middle of the path.
Jenny knew she should just pick it up and return it to him,but she didn't want to run after him.Jenny bent down quickly, picked up the watch and ran home.On arriving home,Jenny put it on almost without thinking. She was surprised it fitted so well. She walked to the mirror and started practising her speech.Words just flooded out of her. "I'm going to talk about swimming.I have been lucky.I've won lots of competitions. But when I'm in a race,I'm not really thinking about winning.I'm just loving the feeling of being in the water…" Jenny laughed with excitement. She walked across the room. She suddenly seemed to have a certain sort of confidence.Turning back to the mirror,Jenny saw a flash of light from the watch in the glass. The flashes of silver seemed almost magical. So maybe Lee's watch really DID have something magic about it.
The next day,as the lesson began,Miss Walker asked who was going to be brave and go first.Nobody moved.Jenny slowly raised her arm. Before Miss Walker could say anything, there was a shout from behind. "She's stolen my watch!" Lee said angrily, "It went missing at school yesterday."
    Paragraph 1:
Everybody was fixing their eyes on Jenny, waiting for an explanation._________.
    Paragraph 2:
Miss Walker smiled and asked the class to listen to Jenny's speech first._______.
