2.My 11-year-old daughter has been awarded an academic scholarship to a private school. It's only a small discount, but the scholarship means she'll skip the waiting list.Should we pay the private school fees,or choose free education instead?
I always assumed my children would go to a private school, like I did.Not because my family is wealthy, but because I believe that the best education is private. It took years for me to make peace with the fact that my two children attended our local public primary school. They'll go to a private high school,I told myself.Yet here we are.My eldest is now in her last year of primary school, and my husband and I will struggle to afford private school. If so,I could increase my work hours. My law degree was supposed to be my ticket to a good job and a secure income, but that's not quite how it turned out.
During many sleepless nights,I felt troubled by the decision.Although I want the best for my daughter,I have my own dreams too.I can't sacrifice(犧牲)everything for my precious girl.I explain that I want to be a positive role model for my daughter, and an unhappy parent is a terrible strain on a family. And finally,it's decided. My daughter is going to the public school behind our home. She couldn't be more pleased.
Now I'm satisfied.More than my fancy private school education,it's my family that shaped me.With high school now 25 years in the past,I can no longer remember what I once knew so perfectly. The lessons from my childhood home, however, have proved impossible to forget.

3.Most people around the world are right-handed.This also seems to be true in history. In 1799,scientists studied works of art made at different times from 1,500 B.C.to the 1950s.Most of the people shown in these works are right-handed,so the scientists guessed that right-handedness has always been common through history.Today, only about 10% to 15% of the world's population is left-handed.
Why are there more right-handed people than left-handed ones?Scientists now know that a person's two hands each have their own jobs. Most people use hands to find things or hold things. The right hand is used to work with things. This is because of the different work of the two sides of the brain. The right side of the brain, which makes a person's hands and eyes work together, controls the left hand. The left side of the brain, which controls the right hand,is the centre for thinking and doing problems. These findings show that more artists should be left-handed,and studies have found that left-handedness is twice as common among artists as among people in other jobs.
No one really knows what makes a person become right-handed instead of left-handed.Scientists have found that almost 40% of the people become left-handed because their main brain is damaged when they are born. However, this doesn't happen to everyone,so scientists guess there must be another reason why people become left-handed.One idea is that people usually get right-handed from their parents.
Though right-handedness is more common than left-handedness,people no longer think left-handed people are strange or unusual.
(1)After studying works of art made at different times in history, the scientists found that
A.the art began from 1,500 B.C.
B.the works of art ended in the 1950s

D.The passage doesn't tell us.

A.No one really knows what makes a person become right-handed.

4.It seems that great artists and scientists often suffer from mental problems. Both Einstein and Dickens had mental illness. Now scientists have started to look at whether mental illness and genius are linked(聯(lián)系).
Dr.Adele Juda studied 5,000 creative people in Germany. She found there were more people with mental illness in this group than in the general population.Poets had the highest rate(比例)of mental illness, followed by musicians, with lower numbers for painters and architects.
Other scientists did research which also showed a strong link between mental problems and creativity. But,it did nothing to explain it.
Dr.Ruth Richards of Harvard University made a breakthrough.Instead of studying creative people, she took a group of psychiatric(精神病的) patients and tested them for creativity. The patients got much higher scores than a normal group.
Also, the patients' close relatives were much more creative than the patients and a normal group. This suggests that the key to the link between creativity and mental illness is in our genes(基因).
But this is a problem.According to Darwinism, harmful genes should be removed. Some scientists believe that evolution(進化)has created a balance, where the madness of a few people leads to the development of the whole human race.
Geniuses may be mad,bad or just difficult to understand, but their discoveries have improved the world we live in.It seems that a little creative madness is good for us all.
(1)According to Dr.Adele Juda, which of the following groups has the lowest rate of mental illness?
A.Painters.
B.Musicians.
C.Poets.
D.Bus drivers.
(2)The underlined phrase "made a breakthrough" in the fourth paragraph means "
A.discovered or found something new and important
B.made a way through using force
C.(of the sun or the moon) appeared from behind (clouds)
D.suddenly changed (from a slower to a faster pace)
(3)Which of the following statements is NOT true?
A.Among the 5,000 creative people in Germany, more people suffer from mental diseases than the general population.
B.There is a strong link between mental problems and creativity.
C.Psychiatric patients make greater contributions than common people.
D.The key to the link between creativity and mental illness is in our genes.組卷:7引用:1難度:0.5

We lived not far from the sea,but I had never been allowed by my parents to play in the sea water. It was said that there was weed at the bottom of the water along the beach and of course it was dangerous to swim in the water. But I didn't believe it and that day,I agreed to play with my friends on the beach.I had to lie to my parents since I would never get a chance to go out if I told them I would go to play on the beach without them in sight.
After breakfast,I read a book in my room for some time to wait for my mum to leave the house. But she kept working in the kitchen.I couldn't waste time any more.Otherwise,Bobby and Jimmy would be angry.
I went downstairs slowly and tried to walk casually towards the back door.Mum asked me without looking up from her work of dish washing,"Where are you going?" I answered without hesitation,"I am going to the outside on the grass to play with Jack and Tim." After I got out of the room,I breathed a sigh of relief. My plan had worked out fine so far.I climbed the fence and jumped onto the muddy field a few feet away from my house and started running towards the bus stop at top speed.I was on the beach scanning the crowd for my friends Jimmy and Bobby about ten minutes later. After a while,I saw them near a coconut(椰子)tree.I ran towards them and got into my swimming trunks. For about an hour,we played volleyball happily.Suddenly,Bobby hit the ball too hard and the ball fell onto the sea.Just as Bobby was going to pick up the ball, the tide came in and carried the ball further and further away from the shore.I wanted to show off my swimming skills,so I declared to help get the ball for them.

I dived into the water and started swimming at a steady pace.______
