  • 2.Do you have to wear uniforms to school every day?Do you like them or you just want to wear your own clothes? Many students just wonder why they can't wear whatever they like, for teenagers want to be different from others.
In fact, there are several reasons why school uniforms are a good idea.First of all, uniforms help the school look smart. The students feel that they belong to a particular" group. When every student in the school wears the uniform, nobody has to worry about fashion.Everybody wears the same style of clothes.Uniforms can be useful in unexpected ways.A school in Ireland has introduced an interesting new uniform. On the edge" of the jacket, there is a piece of cloth which gives off light in the dark. When the children are walking or cycling to school on dark mornings, car drivers can easily see them.
But can uniforms help improve school standards? The answer to this question is not clear.
One study in America found that students' grades improved a little after the school introduced uniforms. But some students didn't want to wear the uniform.Other American studies showed that uniforms have nothing to do with the school performance.
School uniforms are traditional in Britain, but some schools are starting to get rid of them.Students of some very good schools do not have to wear uniforms now. However, uniforms are still popular.Pupils at about 90 percent of British secondary schools wear uniforms.

A.The whole jacket can give off light in the dark.
B.Students can wear it on dark mornings.
C.Students can wear it to walk or ride bikes.
D.It can make drivers see the students easily in the dark.
(3)How does the writer start this passage?

  • 3.If we want to grow as people,we can't just depend on our own evaluation' of how we're doing. We also need to know what other people think about our performance.Receiving feedback" from others can help us see the larger picture and show us a way forward to success. However, someone has to give that feedback, and sometimes, that someone will be you.How should you deal with this
First things first- if you notice a situation in which some feedback would be helpful, give it as soon
as you can.If you wait until the matter disappears from the person's mind, they might not understand what you're trying to tell them.Take the person to a safe, comfortable place and offer your advice in private.
When you're giving feedback,it's important to keep in mind that no one likes to be told they're doing a bad job.Make sure you give an equal" amount of good feedback to balance out anything bad.Like the saying goes, "A spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down. "
All good feedback shares something in common.First,it should help achieve a goal. It's less useful to tell your friends that their dish tastes "interesting" than it is to suggest adding a little salt.Feedback should also look toward the future. You can't change what's already happened, but you can prevent it from happening again.Tell your friends they should take more notes in class instead of talking about how they should have studied harder for the big history exam they failed.
Finally, don't think your suggestion is the only correct way to deal with a situation. You might even end up with some feedback on your feedback.Don't take it personally -- it can only help you give better advice next time.

(1)What does the underlined word "this" in Paragraph 1 probably mean?

    A.Seeing the picture.
    B.Giving feedback.
    C.Receiving feedback.
    D.Showing a way to success.
(2)Why is it important to give feedback in time according to Paragraph 2?

A.You might forget to tell the person later on.
B.Perhaps the person wants the feedback right away.
C.Maybe the person needs time to understand your advice.
D.If you wait too long, the person might forget what's happened.
(3)What can we infer from the underlined saying in Paragraph 3?

A.It's helpful to keep on giving bad feedback.
B.It's difficult to do a good job all the time.
C.It's better to balance good and bad feedback.
D.It's important to think twice before giving feedback.
    (4)The passage is mainly about
    .
    A.what characters good feedback includes
B.how people should give feedback properly
C.the differences between good and bad feedback
D.the importance of giving and receiving feedback

  • 菁優(yōu)網(wǎng)4.Many of us have had this experience:We lie down in a bed other than our own, perhaps at a friend's house or in a hotel room, and find it difficult or impossible to fall asleep. Is it because the bed is uncomfortable?Maybe, but perhaps there can be other reasons.
According to a new study published in Current Biology,an important reason is what the scientists call "first night effect".They believe that one side of the brain acts as a "night watch" to warn us about potential' dangers. It forces us to stay awake on the first night in a new environment.
For the study,35 young volunteers were asked to sleep in a sleep lab for several days.Meanwhile, researchers watched their brain activities.
According to the researchers,on their first night, the left brains were more active than the right brains and people had a hard time sleeping.However,left- brain activity decreased as days went by,falling even to the point of complete quietness. So,the volunteers got an increasingly better sleep experience.
The findings suggest that the different rhythms of the sides of the brain influence our sleep. When the two sides work differently, the balance between them is broken. And the brain can't relax, just as it is in the daytime.
US professor Jerome Siegel told Smithsonian Magazine, "If something unusual happens- if a door opens or you hear a key in a lock -- you can be alert, even though the sound is quite low."It works to protect us in a dangerous environment.
More surprisingly, this situation is similar to the way some animals sleep.Whales, dolphins, and many birds can sleep with half of their brain while the other half stays awake, with its one eye staying open.
If you have ever had what you think is "first night effect",researchers suggest that you bring your own pillow or sleep in a room similar to your bedroom next time you sleep away from home.

(1)The cause of "first night effect" is that
    .
A.the left brains begin to relax
B.the right brains have a hard time
C.one side of the brains is more active
D.two sides of the brains need more rest

    .
    A.protects people from danger
    B.helps animals sleep better
    C.a(chǎn)ffects less in the daytime
    D.causes something unusual
(3)To solve the problem of "first night effect",we're advised to
    .
A.study the pictures of more animals
B.learn from the way animals sleep
C.lie in a more comfortable bed
    D.get used to new environments
(4)The passage might be taken from a part of a
    .
    A.travel poster
    B.news report
    C.science magazine
    D.school notice
