Rose's front doorbell rang loudly.She lived alone but she liked company now and again.She didn't like it if she missed visitors.That happened a lot in the past when her doorbell was too quiet.But everything was fine now，thanks to Mr.Banks，Gus's dad.He put in a louder doorbell for her，which made all the difference.He was always doing odd jobs for her when she needed help.But now poor Mr.Banks was gone.
It seemed so unfair for a nice man like him to die at forty so young!With a wife and two children to support，too!Poor Mrs.Banks.
Rose opened her door.It was Gus Banks，standing there with a big smile and a bag of potatoes. "Mum sent me with these，" he said. "She said to tell you the jam was lovely.We tried some jam from the farmers' market but it's not as good as yours，Rose."
"That's nice of her to say so，dear.I'd love to give you some more but I haven't got any，" Rose said sadly.She could see that Gus was disappointed，though he was trying hard not to show it.
She continued. "But there are always some blackberries growing in the field at this time of year.If you pick some for me，I'll show you how I make the jam and then you can make it yourself!"
Gus opened his mouth in surprise. "What，me？I can't make jam!And even if I did，it could never be as good as your jam，Rose!"
Rose laughed and smiled. "Don't be silly，Gus.I'll show you.There's nothing to it once you know how."
"Really？"
"Yes，love."
"See you tomorrow，Rose." said Gus，as he put the potatoes down in Rose's hallway.
