  • 3.Everyone needs a buddy, even jye.ai.Sharks are often described as Hollywood monsters, the lone wolves hiding in the deep, hunting for prey. But that description of sharks is increasingly out of step with what scientists are learning about the animals.Instead, they say, some species of sharks are social creatures who return day after day to a group of the same fellow sharks.
Papastamatious's team studied gray reef sharks living in the waters off Palmyra Atoll Island. They attached small location transmitters to track the animals' movements around the reef. After tracking the sharks for four years, the researchers found that the same groups of sharks frequently returned to the same parts of the reef repeatedly. They also found that some of the groups stuck together longer than previous studies have observed.
The sharks might be motivated to stay together,Papastamatious says, because it makes hunting for food easier. "If we hang out together and I see something, then you can come and try and take advantage of that," he says. "And alternatively,if you see something, then I can try and take advantage of that."
He emphasizes that the sharks don't hunt together, but says that as long as the group isn't too large—which would raise competition and conflict-socializing appears to benefit the sharks. And that may be one of the factors that led to sociality in the species.
David Shiffman, who studies sharks' ecology and conservation at Arizona State University, says he was surprised to learn the sharks stuck together for so long. "I mean,I don't have a lot of friends I do that with," he jokes.
Sharks are amazing creatures,Shiffman says.In addition to knowing where to grab a bite by watching their friends,he says, some species of sharks can also learn to solve simple puzzles, just by watching other sharks solve them.Given their intelligence and social abilities,he says perhaps it's time to drop prejudices about sharks. "It turns out that they are a lot smarter than most people think, and they have come complex ability to process their environment and learn and change," Shiffman says.

(1)Why do some sharks keep together?

A.To go back to the same reef.
    B.To have fun.

  • 4.When faced with the decision to get out of bed or have a few more minutes of sleep, which do you choose?Believe it or not, that decision could make a world of difference in the rest of your day.
About 85 percent of Americans use an alarm clock to wake up in the mornings, according to sleep researcher Till Roennenber. And while there are no official numbers on snoozing(打盹),a quick survey of social media makes it clear that hitting the snooze button is a popular pastime.
As to how the snooze button will affect your day, scientists have mixed opinions. Some scientists think people who hit the snooze button in the mornings are actually clever, creative and happy while some said that hitting the snooze button will ruin your life,or at the very least your day. "I feel that hitting the snooze button has got to be one of the worst things that ever happened to human sleep," researcher Jonathan Horowitz said. "The chances of you 'snoozing' and actually experiencing a meaningful rest are close to zero."
According to some sleep experts, when hitting the snooze button, you are in fact confusing your body and mind, and throwing yourself into a deep state of being sleepy. The body needs some time to wake up,so,when returning to what will be a light sleep for a brief period of time, you are putting your body back into a sleep mode before waking it again. At that point your body won't know what it wants, resulting in a sort of half awaken state.
If you really want to take advantage of an alarm clock, the key is to form a healthy sleep cycle.Focus your efforts on getting enough sleep each night and waking up at the same time each day so that when your alarm goes off you feel rested.

(1)What can we infer about hitting the snooze button from Paragraph 2?

A.People do it just for fun.
    B.It is a common practice.
    C.People take it seriously.
    D.It is a bit childish.
(2)What do some sleep experts think of hitting the snooze button?

A.It is meaningful in the long term.
    B.It makes people become lazy.
C.It brings us a sense of satisfaction.
D.It affects our body and mind.
(3)What's the author's suggestion on getting the best out of alarms?

    A.Forming a good sleep habit.
    B.Trying to relax ourselves.
    C.Making use of willpower.
    D.Using an extra alarm.
(4)What is the best title for the text?

A.Ways to keep refreshed in the morning.
B.The snooze button and people's character.
C.Should you rely on the snooze button?

We took a plane to Albuquerque,a big city in the state of New Mexico. We reached Albuquerque in the late afternoon.Uncle Paul,my dad's friend, picked us up from the airport and drove us up to his farm in Pecos.
His wife Tina cooked us a delicious dinner and we got to know his sons Ryan and Kyle.My dad and I spent the night in the guestroom of the farm house listening to the frogs and water rolling down the river nearby.Very early in the morning,Uncle Paul woke us up to have breakfast."The day starts at dawn on my farm," he said. After breakfast,I went to help Aunt Tina feed the chickens, while my dad went with Uncle Paul to take the sheep out to graze(吃草).I was impressed to see my dad and Uncle Paul riding horses. They looked really cool.
In the afternoon,I asked Uncle Paul if I could take a horse ride, and he said yes,as long as my dad went with me.I wasn't going to take a horse ride by myself anyway. So,my dad and I put on our new cowboy hats, got on our horses, and headed slowly towards the mountains. "Don't be late for supper,"Uncle Paul cried," and keep to the track so that you don't get lost!" "OK!" my dad cried back. After a while Uncle Paul and his farm house were out of sight. It was so peaceful and quiet and the colors of the brown rocks, the deep green pine trees, and the late afternoon sun mixed to create a magic scene. It looked like beautiful woven(編織的)blanket spread out upon the ground just for us.
