17．I am an American college student here．I met with Carl Baker and started a conversation with him at the bar．After 30 minutes of talking，I found out about his recent hardships and his rent return from the war in Iraq．It seemed that he had been saying the same thing to people for the past year．He was on his way to Albrook shopping center and left his money and his camera in the taxi．He was on R & R （修養(yǎng)與恢復）waiting for his family to meet him here．He showed me the pictures of his wife，kids，and his best friends who died in Iraq．
Since I was a college student with a lot of friends in the army，I felt it was my duty to help him．After a long talk，I then lent him＄50 to live off for the next couple of days．He kept saying that he was going to pay me back as soon as his family got here and how he believed in karma．He explained that meant he would be punished by God in the future if he did not return my money．After a couple of
days，he told me that he needed to go to the neared Air Force base which was in Honduras to get a new passport．Since I was an inexperienced college student，I offered to lend him＄350 for his plane ticket to Honduras．
He assured（向?保證）me again and again，so I had to trust him．He-left for Honduras on October 29 and then we spoke on Thursday after he returned．Later，I didn't receive a call from him．As you can tell，this was very difficult for me to write．I feel rather stupid．I understand now I can stop praying （祈禱）for him to get back in touch with me．I want to share this to hopefully prevent him from doing this again．Also，I want to get this off my chest，since I can't tell my parents．
