  • 3.Can you build a robot that opens a door,picks things up,knocks things down or even scores a goal(進球)?
Students on the robotics team at Discovery School in Oklahoma have already done these things. They have just won the first place at the State Robotics Championship.
In the competition, there were 66 teams from middle schools around the state. They got a box of Lego(樂高)pieces, wheels and motors.Besides building, the team also needed to program their robots.
Each team had the same tasks to perform. So what made the Discovery team so special? And how did they score(得分) 564 out of 590,the best score?
"We use Bluetooth,so we can download information from computer to robot,"said Hugo Reyna,an eighth-grader from the Discovery robotics team. For most teams, wires(電線)were the common tool they used to transfer(傳輸)information between computer and robot. But the Discovery team started studying Bluetooth transfer,a faster and more convenient way, about one year ago. Then they applied(應用)the new technology in the competition. And it performed as well as the students thought.
In one of the tasks, robots had to throw a ball into the goal.Although lots of the robots tripped over(絆倒) the wires as they moved, the Discovery team's robot was as flexible as a professional basketball player. It scored the most goals and won the highest mark from the judges.
In the end,the team from Discovery received a certificate(證書) from Google, showing their achievements in robot technology(技術).

  • 4.When the air is polluted,we wear masks(口罩) to protect our lungs(肺).What about bees and butterflies? They can't wear masks.
James Ryalls and his team at the University of Reading,UK reported their new findings.Their study found that air pollution can influence(影響) pollinators(傳花粉者) - insects like bees and butterflies.
Pollinators are important. They spread pollen(花粉) among plants with flowers. This helps the flower produce(產出)seed and fruit.Without pollinators, farms cannot make food.
To do their study,Ryalls' team built eight areas. Then, they piped(吹送)nitrogen oxide(氧化氮)and ozone(臭氧) into six of these areas. The other two areas had normal air. "The results were much more severe than we thought,"said Ryalls. The levels of pollution in their tests were similar to "normal road traffic".In those six areas,70 percent fewer insects went to the area.Once they were there, they didn't hang around.Visits to flowers decreased(降低) by up to 90 percent.
Scientists explained that gases like nitrogen oxide and ozone can break down the scents(氣味) of flowers. So pollinators can't smell flowers because of the pollution. This makes it hard for them to find their food.
Maybe the most terrible thing is that the pollution levels were legal(合法的)in the UK.Shannon Olsson,a scientist in India, called the results "important" because they show that "safe" levels of pollution keep pollinators away.
"Air pollution is another stress on insects,"said Ryalls."That adds to all the other stresses…causing their numbers to decrease."
(1)How did Ryalls' team do the research?

A.They compared(比較)insects in areas with polluted and normal air.
B.They brought clean air to the areas with serious air pollution.
C.They piped nitrogen oxide and ozone into eight areas.
(2)What happened to pollinators in areas with air pollution?

A.They could not find each other.
    B.They hung around more often.
    C.They visited flowers less.
(3)What does the underlined word "severe" mean in Chinese?

    A.樂觀的
    B.嚴重的
    C.有效的
(4)Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

A.Bees and butterflies are important pollinators.
B.The pollution levels were legal in India.

A.Pollinators are important for making food.
