3.The local people of La Gomera can carry on conversations by whistling(吹口哨) from far away. For face-to-face conversations, they speak Spanish. But when they need to speak over a distance(距離),they whistle.
La Gomera is a small island. This island is almost shaped like a circle. It has many mountains.Walking from one place to another may be a slow and difficult job. That is why whistling is so useful to the local people.A message can easily be whistled over a couple of miles, while to travel that same distance on foot might take an hour.
A good whistler can be heard and understood five miles away. His whistling can be heard even farther away when it is windless. It is said that the record is about nine miles.Anyone who has heard a top whistler will agree that this record is quite possible.
A whistle travels farther than a shout, and is easier to understand. When a person shouts,he cannot pronounce his words well. But if a whistle is heard,it will be heard clearly.
Whistling is popular at La Gomera, and many methods of whistling are used…

4.Michael Todd wore the same clothes every day for the first three weeks of school. When the other kids began to notice that he was wearing the same black pants and blue and gray long-sleeve shirt day after day,Todd,a fresh man at Jr.College Preparatory High School in Memphis, became the target(對(duì)象)of taunts and laughter. But there was little Todd could do.His mother was simply not able to buy him new clothes.
Two of the kids were Antwan Garrett and Kristopher Graham,a pair of freshman football players. But over time, they realized that their hurtful words felt like bullying(霸凌)and Todd seemed to slowly fall apart.Something finally became clear.
"I felt like I needed to do something",Graham told CBS News.So he and Garrett made a plan. They went home and hunted through their own rooms. The next day at school, they met Todd at their third-period class and asked him to come into the hall.Todd was surely afraid about being called out by the larger boys.
"He wasn't smiling or anything, and I was like, 'I think this is going to make you smile,' Graham says, "I told him, 'We're in the same third period, and I am sorry for laughing at you and I want to give something to you to make it up." He then handed Todd a large heavy bag.Inside were clean shirts and shorts, plus a brand-new pair of New Balance sneakers.
Todd was blown away. "I was very happy," he told WATN-TV, "Shocked, completely." And Todd got much more than a new wardrobe(衣櫥).He no longer sits alone at lunch. Now,he eats with his new friends,Garrett and Graham.

5.Every summer, the Serengeti plains (平原) of Africa are worth visiting.Millions of wild animals begin their 1,800-mile journey northwards on their migratory (遷移的) route every year.
In the month of November, polar bears in their thousands cross the Canadian Arctic,as they head towards the ice sheets of Hudson Bay.The sea ice that forms every winter is the key to the bear's managing to be alive, for here they hunt for seals (海豹).
The Great Bustard, one of the heaviest flying birds, migrates each year across Europe and Asia to its wintering grounds.Unluckily, these and other migratory animals are in danger from human activity.
We have written several articles on climate change and the influence of rising ocean temperatures.Since 1979,ice sheets in the Arctic have gone down by 30 percent. What does this mean for polar bears? They are forced to stay on land for longer periods of time, which delays their search for food.As a result, bears today are 60 pounds lighter than what they were.Besides, smaller bears also produce weaker babies, and their chances of survival are at risk.In the plains of Africa, migratory animals like gazelles are traveling long distances for food, just to avoid falling prey (犧牲品) to humans who hunt them.
In an unusual step, experts from 120 countries have agreed to protect 31 migratory mammals, fish and birds. The United Nation's 11th annual Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) was held in Quito,Ecuador. For the first time,900 experts attended the conference, and the enthusiastic support shows the world is united in conservation (保護(hù)) efforts.
What does getting on a protected list mean?Countries that have signed the agreement will be required to pass laws locally and work with other countries that fall within the animal's migratory path.Only one animal did not make the list. The African lion was rejected (拒絕) for lack of information of the countries where it lives.
(1)What can we learn from the passage?
A.The Great Bustard is one of the largest flying birds.
B.The weight of polar bears today is lighter than what it was.
C.In the 1970s,ice sheets went down by 30 percent.
D.120 experts have agreed to protect 21 migratory animals.
(2)Why was the African lion not included in the list from the passage?
A.We don't know which countries it lives in.
B.It isn't a migratory animal.
C.Experts were not interested in this animal.
D.It was not traveling long distances for food.
(3)The writer writes this passage aiming to
A.let us know about the animals
B.prevent the endangered animals from dying out
C.warn us about the influence of climate change
D.draw our attention to helping the migratory animals
(4)All these reasons have probably led the migratory animals to danger EXCEPT
A.some human activity
B.the support from experts
C.rising ocean temperatures
D.the climate change組卷:1引用:1難度:0.7
