1.I was born and raised in Minnesota, the USA,but as an adult I have mostly lived in Europe and Africa.I teach cross-cultural management at the International Business School near Paris. For the last 15 years,I've studied how people in different parts of the world build trust, communicate, and make decisions especially in the workplace.
While traveling in Tokyo recently with a colleague,I gave a short talk to a group of 20 managers. At the end,I asked whether there were any questions or comments. No hands went up,so I went to sit down.My colleague whispered to me, "I think there actually were some comments,Erin.Do you mind if I try?" I agreed, but I guessed it a waste of breath. He asked the group again, "Any comments or questions?"
Still,no one raised a hand, but this time he looked very carefully at each person in the silent audience.Gesturing to one of them,he said, "Do you have something to add?" To my amazement, she responded "Yes,thank you." and asked me a very interesting question. My colleague repeated this several times, looking directly at the audience and asking for more questions or comments.
After the session,I asked my colleague, "How do you know that those people had questions?" He hesitated, not sure how to explain it,and then said, "It has to do with how bright their eyes are."
He continued, "In Japan,we don't make as much direct eye contact as you do in the West.So when you asked if there were any comments, most people were not looking directly at you.But a few people in the group were looking right at you,and their eyes were bright. That indicates that they would be happy to have you call on them."
I thought to myself I would never have learned from my upbringing in Minnesota.Since then,I try to focus on understanding behavior in other cultures I encounter, and keep finding the bright eyes in the room.

2.Lindsay Renwick, the mayor of Deniliquin,a country town in New South Wales, misses the constant whir (嗡嗡聲) of the rice mill(磨坊)whose giant fans dried the rice. The Deniliquin mill, the largest rice mill in the Southern Hemisphere (南半球),once processed enough grain to meet the needs of 20 million people globally. But six years of drought have had a destructive effect, reducing Australia's rice crop by 98 percent and leading to the mothballing of the mill last December.
Drought affects every agriculture industry based in Australia, not just rice - from sheep farming, the country's other backbone,to the cultivation of grapes for wine, the fastest-growing crop there, with that expansion often coming at the expense of rice. The drought's effect on rice has produced the greatest impact on the rest of the world,so far.It is one factor contributing to skyrocketing prices, and many scientists believe it is among the earliest signs that a warming planet is starting to affect food production.
Researchers are looking for solutions to global rice shortages - for example, rice that blooms earlier in the day, when it is cooler,to fight against global warming.Rice plants that happen to bloom on hot days are less likely to produce grains of rice,a difficulty that is already starting to emerge in inland areas of China and other Asian countries as temperatures begin to climb. "There will be problems very soon unless we have new varieties of rice in place," said Reiner Wassmann, climate change director at the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI).The recent reports on climate change carried a warning that could make the news even worse:that existing models for the effects of climate change on agriculture did not yet include newer findings that global warming could reduce rainfall and make it more variable.
Yet the effects of climate change are not uniformly bad for rice.Rising concentrations of carbon dioxide, the main greenhouse gas,can actually help rice - although the effect reduces or disappears if the plants face unnecessary heat, inadequate water, severe pollution or other stresses.Still, the flexibility of farmers here has persuaded some climate experts that, particularly in developed countries, the effects of climate change may be relieved,if not completely avoided. "I'm not as negative as most people," said Will Steffen, director of the Fenner School of Environment and Society at Australian National University. "Farmers are learning how to do things differently."
Meanwhile, changes like the use of water to grow wine grapes instead of rice carry their own costs,as the developing world is discovering. "Rice is an essential food," said Graeme Haley, the general manager of the town of Deniliquin. "Wine is not."

A.seeking new types of rice which could bloom at a lower temperature
B.building greenhouses which could provide more heat for rice to grow
C.studying climate changes in China which may affect rice growing in Asia
D.looking for alternative agriculture industries which may take the place of rice
(3)Which of the following can be learned from the passage?
A.Most people look on the bright side of the flexibility of farmers.
B.Rice prices are rising steadily owing to the crop failure in Australia.
C.The rice production has threatened wine grape cultivation of Australia.
D.Global warming may contribute to more complicated weather conditions.
(4)Which of the following best serves as the title of the passage?
A.Rice crisis and its solution
B.Rice shortage and wine boom

3.Scientists have found living organisms trapped in crystals (晶體) that could be 50,000 years old.The organisms were found in a hot,but beautiful cave system in Naica,Mexico. These ancient life forms can be seen only with a microscope.Penelope Boston, who leads the Astrobiology Institute at NASA,the space agency of the United States, says the ancient microbes were able to live by eating minerals such as iron.
She spoke about the discovery recently at a meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. If the findings are confirmed, they will show how microbes can survive in extreme conditions.Forty different kinds of microbes and some viruses were found in the underground area. The genetic structures of these organisms are 10 percent different from those of their nearest relatives.
The caves in Naica are 800 kilometers deep. They were once used for mining lead. Before the miners began working in the caves, the area was separated from the surface and the outside world. Some of the caves are as big as the large religious centers built during Europe's Middle Ages. There are crystals covering the walls. The caves are so hot that scientists must wear special clothing to keep cool. The clothing keeps the crystals safe from human germs (病菌) or other damage.Boston said the researchers could only work for about 20 minutes at a time before they had to go to a room that was 38 degrees Celsius to cool down.
NASA officials would not let Boston share her findings with scientific experts before last week's announcement. So scientists could not say much about the findings. But Norine Noonan,a biologist with the University of South Florida, said she believed them. "Why are we surprised?" Noonan asked. "As a biologist,I would say life on earth is extremely tough and extremely colorful."
Boston is also studying microbes commonly found inside caves in other countries, such as Ukraine and the United States. These microbes appear to be impossible to kill.Boston said they show how difficult life on earth can be.

4.In the mid-2000s,Waze Mobile co-founder Ehud Shabtai received a cutting-edge(尖端的)gift from his girlfriend:a GPS.The expensive gift was supposed to be helpful. But straight out of the box,it was already out of date.
Shabtai,a coding enthusiast, had an immediate reaction to reinvent.Shabtai's solution? To build an app. With 50 million monthly active users globally and nearly 400,000 super users who function much like Wikipedia volunteer editors (editing maps rather than words),Waze Mobile caught the eye of Google as a revolutionary approach to navigation(導航)
Acquired by Google in 2013,Waze's value mainly lies in its high rate of user involvement.Unlike traditional navigation Apps that simply show directions,Waze asks its users to report accidents and other road conditions in real time,so other users can avoid the traffic by using an alternative route.
The goal behind Waze's approach is an ambitious one:not just avoid traffic, but end it altogether.Waze is finding new ways to put its loyal and active user base to use to make that vision a reality, including a plan to make carpooling(拼車)cool.
To be sure, traffic jams are troubling people all over the world.Waze has been quietly ahead of the game for some time.In 2013,when Waze was just a small digital-mapping business with limited resources,it had something Google Maps and other competitors didn't:richer GPS guidance thanks to its stream of live traffic reports from users.
These users were the basis of Shabtai's plan to solve for his GPS device's "silent" hardware:he grounded the app in software that could be perpetually updated by users, anywhere and anytime.
Waze Carpool is going straight to the heart of traffic jams, trying to get more drivers off the road and into carpools. The app has already connected tens of thousands of ride seekers with drivers willing to ferry them along a shared route, and that trend could be the answer to a traffic-free future.
