1.What's best to read this year? Secrets I Know(Random House Children's Books,ages 3-7)
This tale written by Kallie George and pictured by Paola Zakimi follows a young girl and her little friend as they move from rain to sunshine, from pleasant loneliness to sweet friendship, and finally from adventures on earth to an exploration of the sky above. The colors of Zakimi's pencildrawings are calming and George's poetic text tells her story with simple language.
Pandora (Clarion Books,ages 3-7)
The award-winning author Victoria Turnbull tells the story of a little fox Pandora.Pandora lives alone. She makes herself a handsome home, but no one ever comes to visit. Then one day something falls from the sky -- a bird with a broken wing.Little by little, the bird helps Pandora feel less lonely.Turnbull's watercolor and colored pencil drawings make this story of friendship and growth an atmospheric delight.
Prince and Pirate(G.P.Putnam's Sons Books for Younger Readers, ages 5-8)
A different kind of friendship is described in this book,by Charlotte Gunnufson with pictures by Mike Lowery.Prince and Pirate are a pair of mismatched fish put into the same aquarium(水族館).At first it seems that they'll never learn to be friends. It's only when both take pity on a frightened dogfish that they learn the benefits of cooperation, and soon all three fish become good friends.
The Giant Jumperee(Dinal Books,ages 3-5)
The story was written by the award-winning British author Julia Donaldson. When Rabbit hears a loud voice bellowing(吼叫)threateningly from inside a cave,he gathers Cat,Bear and Elephant to help him decide what to do.But it's Mama Frog who fearlessly confronts(面對)the unknown creature.Helen Oxenbury's soft watercolors creat a beautiful countryside and her characterizations of the animals are impressive.

2."Keep your eyes open. This is where the Ewoks(伊沃克人)live." The one-hour drive outside of San Francisco, covered in clouds along windy roads, has inspired my husband to say this sentence at least a dozen times.
We finally arrive at Muir Woods National Park.I explain the strange green stuff on trunks of trees as we pass by moss (苔蘚),something my 5-year-old son Cole has never seen in the desert where we live.
"Mom,are Ewoks real?I think they maybe aren't real." There's a question in Cole's voice,like he's trying on this idea.
We've been down the road of pretending versus reality before, what with all the talk of superheroes and such around our house. "I think you are right.Ewoks are just in the movies. But it would be cool if they were real, right ?"
Cole's silent for a while, thinking. "I just saw an Ewok's ear back there!" Cole spotted an additional Ewok arm and one full body of the tiny hairy creatures. It does indeed look like we are in the Ewok forest of Star Wars.
Cole's imagination is more than I can understand. What do plants eat?Which is the best planet?Which rocks float? He loves life.He loves his inner world and outer existence equally.
I hear a lot of worry from parents about media sucking the souls from our children, taking away their time for creative play. For us,this hasn't been the case.Cole and his brother are quite knowledgeable in the realities of life when it comes to Angry Birds,Curious George, and the adventures of Indiana Jones. These characters, and others of their own invention, live in my home like visitors, joining us on walks and outings.I appreciate them, though not all the time, for the company they give my sons and their busy minds.
I think of media characters as an add-on to already busy minds, and they become part of the parenting team. They teach loyalty,curiosity......-lessons I'm trying to convey, but in a much cooler way than I can.
(1)Where are the family heading for?
A.The cinema.
B.A park.
C.San Francisco.
D.A desert.

A.He is proud of himself.
B.He is full of curiosity.

(3)What do many parents think of their children playing via media?
A.It wastes children's time.
B.It can make their children relaxed.
C.It can engage their children in learning actively.
D.It can accompany their children in their absence.
(4)What's most likely to be the authors attitude to the media characters in parenting children?
A.Indifferent.
B.Critical.
C.Supportive.
D.Disapproving.組卷:5引用:3難度:0.6 -
3.The bad health effects of sleep loss during the week can't be repaid by longer weekend sleep, according to a new study.
Researchers have long known that sleep deprivation(剝奪)can cause weight gain and increase other health risks. But for those who force themselves out of bed every weekday after too few hours of shuteye, they hope turning off the alarm on Saturday and Sunday will repay the weekly sleep debt and remove any ill effects.
The research, published in Current Biology, crushes those hopes.Despite complete freedom to sleep during a weekend recovery period, people in a sleep lab who were limited to five hours of sleep on weekdays gained nearly three pounds over two weeks and experienced disorders that would increase their risk for diabetes over the long term. While weekend recovery sleep had some benefits after a single week of sleep loss, those gains were wiped out when people fell right back into their same sleep-deprived schedule the next Monday.
"If there are benefits of catch-up sleep, they're gone when you go back to your daily schedule. It's very short lived," said Kenneth Wright, director of the sleep and chronobiology lab at the University of Colorado at Boulder. "These health effects are long term. It's kind of like smoking once was — people would smoke and wouldn't see an immediate effect on their health, but people will say now that smoking is not a healthy lifestyle choice.I think sleep is in the early stage of where smoking used to be."
Wright said that the study suggests people should put sleep in the first place cutting out the "sleep stealers" such as watching television shows or spending time on their phones.Even when people don't have a choice about losing sleep because of child-care responsibilities or job schedules, they should think about getting sleep in the same way they would get a healthy diet or exercise.
(1)What does the underlined word "crushes" mean?
A.Ruins.
B.Guarantees.
C.Deepens.
D.Arouses.
(2)What will Kenneth Wright agree with?
A.Smoking is more harmful than sleep loss.
B.Weekend recovery sleep has many benefits.
C.Smoking and sleep loss have the same bad effects.
D.It takes long for people to see the effects of sleep loss.
(3)What does Kenneth Wright advise people to do?
A.Take regular exercise every day.
B.Reduce the screen time before sleep.
C.Watch some TV shows before bedtime.
D.Sleep as long as possible during weekdays.
(4)What is the main purpose of this passage?
A.To share some unhappy experiences.
B.To show some unknown facts.
C.To promote a healthy lifestyle.
D.To introduce a new study.組卷:1引用:1難度:0.7
