3.Nowadays,the food that you buy comes from many different countries.Have a look in your fridge, cupboard, and fruit bowl and check the origins (來源) of the food.Perhaps there are apples from California, lamb from New Zealand,or potatoes from Egypt. You will probably be surprised how far food travels to get to your plate. This journey, from "field to plate",is called "food miles".A food mile is the distance that food travels from the farmer's field to the person who buys the food.Nowadays, food often travels thousands of miles to get to the consumer (消費者).Why is this, and what are the effects of these long distances?
Traditionally, farmers sold their food in the local market,so the food didn't have to travel very far.The consumers also did not travel very far because they went to their local markets to buy the food. This was a good system for farmers and consumers. However, there were some disadvantages. For example, consumers could only buy food that farmers produced locally. In addition, they could only get food that was in season. Now,because of modern technology, food comes from all over the world. We do not have to wait for spring or summer to buy strawberries or tomatoes. They are available (可購得的) in winter if we want.
Some countries have to import (進口) most of their food. This because they have difficult climates (氣候).The United Arab Emirates (UAE),for example, gets 85% of its food from other countries.Even food made in the UAE often uses imported materials.
What's wrong with "food miles"?Is this not a good way of increasing international trade?I believe these miles are worrying for a number of reasons.First of all, because food travels such long distances,we need more planes, lorries, and ships to move the food. This means we use more oil or petrol,so there is more pollution and more global warmjye.aig.In addition, food that travels a long way is not fresh and usually not very tasty.Tomatoes, for example, are picked early and stored for their long journeys. For this reason, they are usually tasteless when they get to the consumer.Local food has a better taste, and it also reduces (減少) the amount of global pollution,We need to buy more local food.
(1)What is called "food miles" according to this passage?
A.The origins of the food.
B.The effects of long distances.
C.The journey from field to plate.
D.The disadvantages of imported food.
(2)Some countries, like the United Arab Emirates, have to import most of their food because of
A.long distances
B.difficult weather
C.fresh and tasty food
D.modern technology
(3)The writer uses the LAST paragraph mostly to encourage readers to
A.buy more local food
B.increase international trade
C.travel long distances
D.use imported materials組卷:7引用:1難度:0.5 -
4.It may be hard to believe, but the American Revolution (革命)- the war that freed the American states from British control---began over a cup of jye.ai.Tea was not the only thing that caused the war,of course, but it played a very big part.
The British people's love of tea is well-known.When the British won control over much of North America in the early 1700s,they brought their tea-drinking habits with them.Tea quickly became the continent's most popular drink. As tea could not be grown locally, just as in Britain,it was shipped into the country-mostly from India.
In the early 1700s,the Britain government made a special deal with the East India Company,as an English trading company. They agreed that no other company was allowed to bring tea to Britain or any country controlled by Britain, including America. It was a great deal for the East India Company, since it meant that the company could decide whatever price it wanted for its products. And it always decided on a high price!
In North America, the local people did not like having to pay such high prices.Instead of overpaying for tea from the British, they turned to Dutch traders, who secretly brought tea to the country that was just as good-and much less expensive.Although this broke the law,the American people didn't care. They got the same cup of tea at a much lower price.
The East India Company, however, didn't like this at all.By the 1760s,they were losing millions of pounds each year to Dutch traders---a huge amount of money in a time when £60 a year was considered a good income.Instead of reducing their prices to compete with the Dutch, the company asked the British government for help and the government agreed.
In 1767,the British introduced new laws that increased the prices of all goods which were brought into America. These laws helped make the East India Company even richer and forced local people to pay much more for everything. The American leaders asked the British government not to do so,but the British refused to listen. These unfair laws increased Americans' anger about British rule and the rest,as they say,is history.

5.You may have heard this saying many times:Not to pocket the property one picks up is a virtue (拾金不昧是一種美德).But how about offering something for such good behavior?
According to CCTV News, authorities in Guangzhou,Guangdong have announced new rules to encourage more people to return lost things.
The rules say that people who hand in lost belongings will get 10 percent of the item's value (商品的價值) as a reward (報酬) from the police.Items that are not claimed within one year will be auctioned (拍賣) if it is necessary.Even so,the finder will still be rewarded the same. The rewards will come from government funding (資金).Also,if items are claimed, the rules encourage the owners to give the finders certain money.
The rules have caused heated public debate.People who disagree with it say that it could take away the nobility (高尚) of the act and are concerned it will lower people's moral character,Qianjiang Evening News reported.
Zhang Xusheng,17,a student at Qingyun No.1 High School in Shandong province, remembered how he felt when he once returned a lost wallet. "I felt proud of myself and happy for the owner.Such good thing should be done out of selflessness," he said.
However,Wang Yidi,an 18-year-old girl from Anhui province, said that there is no argument (爭論) between nobility and reward. "The difference is the person who does it," she said. "A good person will do good things, regardless of reward."
Many people welcome the regulation (規(guī)定),saying it will encourage more people to do the right thing,Beijing Daily reported. After all,not everybody is willing to return lost property to its owner.Finders also need to take care of lost items and spend time looking for their owners. The regulation gives finders the right to ask for a reward, which is in the best interest of both parts.
Countries like Japan and Germany already have similar laws.According to Japan's Lost Goods Law,people who find a lost item should quickly return it to the owner or turn it over to the police. The owner should provide the finder with a reward of 5 to 20 percent of the item's value. In Germany, people who hand in lost property worth less than 1,000 euros (7,756 yuan) are awarded 5 percent of the value, while those who return lost pets receive 3 percent of the pets' value.
(1)Why do some disagree with the new rules?
A.It is hard to make the rules work.
B.Returning lost items is our responsibility (責任).
C.It is difficult for the government to offer reward.
D.We can't measure (衡量) selflessness (無私) by money.
