  • 2.Somewhere in the warm, clear waters off the coast of Australia,a mature bottlenose dolphin is swimming with her daughter. It's dinnertime. But,instead of chasing down a fish in open waters like she usually does, mom swims over to a basket sponge (海綿)growing on the ocean floor. In a quick move, she breaks off a piece of the sponge, then fits it closely over her mouth. It's hard not to wonder what that watchful youngster might be thinking about all this. Are you going to eat that sponge? Are we playing?
With the sponge secured on her beak, the older dolphin starts sweeping her head back and forth across the ocean floor. She's looking for fish like the sand perch(沙鱸),which hide themselves on the floor of the sea under the sand.As for the sponge stuck onto her mouth,it allows her to clear away the sand without injuring herself on broken pieces of coral,or maybe even suffering the sting (刺痛)of the scorpion fish. The extra work it takes to catch a fish like the sand perch is worth it because they tend to be fattier. And for a dolphin, fattier means more nutritious.
Sure enough, after a few minutes,a sand perch comes out.The fish dashes off for a few yards and then hesitates, waiting for a moment before burying itself in the sand agajye.ai.In that brief pause, the elder dolphin shakes off the sponge, surfaces for a breath, and then comes down and catches the sand perch before it can rebury itself. She then passes it to her daughter. And with that, the younger dolphin hasn't just gotten a good meal;more importantly, she's learned a powerful hunting technique - one that years from now, she'll pass along to her own children.

(1)Which word best describes the young dolphin's feeling in the first paragraph?

    A.Anxious.
    B.Curious.
    C.Scared.
    D.Relaxed.
(2)Why does the mother dolphin need a piece of sponge?

    A.To chase down fattier fish.
    B.To play with her children.
C.To protect herself from being hurt.
D.To hide herself under the sand.
(3)How does the older dolphin catch the sand perch?

A.She waits for the right time.
    B.She hides under the sand.
C.She sets a trap for it.
    D.She makes use of space.
(4)What is the text mainly about?

    A.Guidance of an experienced elder.
B.Reliance of a young dolphin on her mom.
C.The process of catching fat fish.
    D.The powerful hunting technique.

  • 3.Have you ever lined up?How do you feel? Most of us line up a large number of times during our lives.Waiting lines are such a thorn in our sides at popular destinations - Disney World, the Empire State Building - that many of us are willing to pay to avoid lines.
Culture has much to do with how we handle waiting lines. The British are the best people in the world at waiting in lines.I've never seen a people less concerned with lines than the British.
If you've been to Wimbledon you know what I mean. There are no online ticket sales for this fortnight of tennis. You queue up for hours, often a half day or more with 8,0000 others on a golf course near the stadium, suffering whatever rain, wind or sun.
It is an unwritten but ever present rule at Wimbledon that you never talk about or even admit that the queue exists. You'll hear and participate in every conversation imaginable while wajye.aiing.It's not really possible to jump or break-in a queue at Wimbledon because of the stewards and the time-dated stamps they hand out,and it's considered bad behavior anywhere by the British.
Some places such as restaurants in Canada and in the States are getting wise. The host or hostess greets you,and says politely. "Sorry, but it will be about 45 minutes!" Almost always you'll be seated in just 20 to 30 minutes. It's called managing expectations. But,now you're very happy as if you had something to do with getting a table earlier.
Finally, technology promises to save some queuing time.In the years ahead, stores will adopt Apple's methods, with every salesperson capable of taking payments. Then the lines will disappear.
With age, perhaps, comes wisdom.I do whatever I can to avoid activities where queues are quite common. But you can't always avoid lines,so I make the best of them.I usually start conversations with total strangers in a queue...at the very least you open yourself up to an opportunity for an engaging conversation.Queues, like life, have a lot to do with attitudes.

(1)Why does the author say that waiting lines are a thorn in our sides?

    A.Lining up makes us hurt.
B.We have to pay to avoid lines.
C.We spend most of our life queuing.
D.Waiting lines are unavoidable in our life.
    (2)While queuing in Wimbledon
    .
A.you will be fined if you break in
B.everybody is used to waiting long
C.people prove the existence of queues
D.the waiting time depends on the weather
(3)What does the underlined part "managing expectations" in Paragraph 5 refer to?

A.Reducing waiting times at queue lines.
    B.Haring high expectation for customers.
C.Tying lo live up to customers' expectations.
D.Letting customers wait shorter than they expected.
(4)What is the author's attitude towards line?

    A.Positive.
    B.Unclear.
    C.Annoyed.
    D.Indifferent.

There was once a boy in ragged clothes running to ask a building contractor(包工頭)who wore elegant clothes in a construction site of a skyscraper(摩天大樓),"How could I become as rich as you when I grow up?"
With a glance at the boy,the tall and strong-build contractor replied,"I would like to tell you a story first about three diggers. The first digger liked holding a spade(鍬)without doing anything but saying that he wanted to be a boss in the future. The second digger liked complaining about the long-time work and his low salary. The third digger always quietly devoted himself to digging without making any claims.Several years later, the first digger was still holding his spade in the original place and the second took an excuse of work injury for early retirement.Only the third digger became the boss of the building company.Do you understand the moral of this story?Just go to buy a red shirt and work hard."
The little boy was puzzled and could not figure out the implication of the story. So he asked the contractor to explain further.Pointing to the builders who were working on the scaffold(腳手架),the contractor talked to the little boy,"Look at those people! They are all my workers.I can't remember all of their names, and even I have no impression of some of them. But if you look carefully, you will notice a sunburned man in red among them.I notice him very early. He seems to be working harder with higher spirits than otjye.airs.He is always the first one to work every day while the last one to leave. It is exactly his red shirt that makes him stand out among all the workers. Now I am about to ask him to be my taskmaster and I believe he will work even much harder from now on.Maybe he will soon be promoted to my assistant."
    注意:1.續(xù)寫詞數(shù)應(yīng)為150左右;
    2.請按如下格式在答題卡的相應(yīng)位置作答。
