19．It was late afternoon on Basse-Terre Island in the French West Indies.A few hours before sunset，Christina and I decided to hike to Acomat Falls，about half a mile into the rainforested mountains near Guadeloupe National Park.
Heavy rain began to fall as we arrived at the trailhead，so we decided to wait for five minutes.Sure enough，it stopped and we set off down the muddy path.Expecting to spend no more than an hour at the falls，we wore T-shirts and swimsuits.I carried my phone and camera.We were visiting a well-known spot，so I hadn't told anyone where we were going except Mae，our vacation rental host.
We hiked for 15 minutes through mud and roots.After crossing a 10-foot-wide river and walking upstream about 100 yards，we finally reached the falls.It was around 4 p.m.jye.ai only one other couple was there.We dove into the green pool and floated on our backs，looking up at the canyon（周圍有懸崖峭壁的峽谷） walls.
By 4：30，the other couple had left.We knew we needed to leave，but I was waist-deep in the river trying to photograph the falls.Christina was sitting on a rock.I finally got a good shot-and then she shouted.
With a crack like thunder，a wall of brown water rushed over the top of the falls，carrying fragments of trees and plants with it. "Flash flood!" I jumped out of the river immediately and Christina scrambled（爬） barefoot off the rock toward higher ground.We clawed our way up the canyon on all fours.After climbing about 200 feet，we stopped to catch our breath.I looked over my shoulder and saw that the water had risen by about 20 feet.Now we had a different problem：Our car were on the other side of the swollen river.We were stuck.
