  • 2.I remember the day during our first week of class when we were informed about our semester(學(xué)期)project of volunteering at a non-profit organization. When the teacher introduced us to the different organizations that needed our help,my last choice was Operation Iraqi Children(OIC).My first impression of the organization was that it was not going to make enough of a difference with the plans I had in mind.
Then,an OIC representative gave us some details, which somewhat interested me.
After doing some research,I believed that we could really do something for those kids.
When I went online to the OIC website,I saw pictures of the Iraqi children.Their faces were so powerful in sending a message of their despair(絕望)and need that I joined this project without hesitation. We decided to collect as many school supplies as possible, and make them into kits—one kit,one child.
The most rewarding day for our group was project day, when all the efforts we put into collecting the items finally came together. When I saw the various supplies we had collected,it hit me that every kit we were to build that day would eventually be in the hands of an Iraqi child.Over the past four months,I had never imagined how I would feel once our project was completed. While making the kits,I realized that I had lost sight of the true meaning behind it.I had only focused on the fact that it was another school project and one I wanted to get a good grade on.When the kits were completed, and ready to be sent overseas, the warm feeling I had was one I would never forget.
In the beginning,I dared myself to make a difference in the life of another person.
Now that our project is over,I realize that I have affected not only one life, but ten. With our efforts, ten young boys and girls will now be able to further their education.

(1)How did the author feel about joining the OIC project in the beginning?

A.It would affect his/her initial plans.
    B.It would involve traveling overseas.
C.It would not bring him/her a good grade.
D.It would not live up to his/her expectations.
(2)What mainly helped the author change his/her attitude toward the project?

    A.Images of Iraqi children.
    B.Research by his/her classmates.
    C.A teacher's introduction.
    D.A representative's comments.
(3)The author's OIC project group would help ten Iraqi children to
    .
    A.become OIC volunteers
    B.further their education
    C.study in foreign countries
    D.influence other children
(4)What can we conclude from this passage?

A.One's potential cannot always be underrated.
B.First impression cannot always be trusted.
    C.Actions speak louder than words.
    D.He who hesitates is lost.

  • 3.A.green sea turtle(海龜) struggled to move in the cold water off the coast of Texas in the Gulf of Mexico. The water was normally warm, but an extreme cold front from the Arctic swept the area, dropping the air temperature below freezing. The cold-blooded sea turtle became almost frozen:Its body stopped moving, and it couldn't get a breath of air.Without help, these sea turtles would have died underwater.
A conservation group on South Padre Island was ready to help.On the first day of the storm, staff and volunteers from Sea Turtle,Inc.,headed out on boats to rescue the sea turtles. They loaded them onto trucks and transported them to the organization's rescue center.
The group usually rescued only about a hundred turtles on days when the weather briefly got cold. But this February storm was different:By the second day, volunteers had already pulled more than 600 frozen sea turtles from the water.
Over the next five days, new sea turtles arrived during the daytime. At night, the volunteers wore headbands with flashlights to provide medical care in the dark building. They tried to keep the sea turtles clean while they were out of the water.
Eight days after the storm began, the water was finally warm enough to release the sea turtles.About 30 miles offshore, the boat stopped, and the workers put over 2,300 sea turtles back into the ocean.
If the workers and volunteers hadn't rescued these sea turtles, none of them would have survived. "We were up all night, every night, and the release was exhausting, too," a volunteer said. "But it was worth it to watch those sea turtles go down the slides back where they belong."

(1)Why did the green sea turtles struggle to move in the water?

A.They were about to sleep in winter.
B.The water around was usually warm.
C.They became trapped by fishing nets.
D.A freezing cold front suddenly occurred.
(2)What does paragraph 4 mainly tell us?

A.What kind of care the sea turtles received.
B.Why the volunteers went to the dark center.
C.How the volunteers looked after the turtles.
D.Whether it was necessary to keep turtles clean.
(3)What may be the direct result of the act of releasing?

A.More sea turtles will be born in this area.
B.Many sea turtles had died before releasing.
C.The volunteers had a sense of achievement.
D.A lot of green sea turtles were finally rescued.
(4)What does this text want to convey?

A.We should live in harmony with nature.
B.Great things may be done by mass efforts.
C.Nature is a mirror reflecting human activities.
D.It is crucial to improve the habitat of sea turtles.

  • 4.No doubt that humans have widely changed, developed, and exploited (開發(fā)) much of the natural world for our own ends. But how much of the land surface remains free of our often-harmful influence?
In a new study, scientists compared figures from four different sets of data using different kinds of methods and classification (分類) systems to answer this questijye.ai.On average, the researchers say roughly half (48 to 56 percent) of the world's land shows"low"influence of humans. While the figures may inspire many - stressing the vast expanse of significantly untouched lands that can still be protected through conservation measures一the study also shows just how much of the Earth has already been occupied and used by humans.
In fact, only about a quarter (20 to 34 percent) of the plane's ice-free land surface shows"very low" signs of human influence, the researchers say,and the parts of the planet that we have left alone up until now constitute (構(gòu)成) some of the least livable places on Earth. In other words, whether through urbanization, forestry, agriculture or other means, humans have applied the most influence on biodiverse land that presented ripe and easy opportunities for immediate human needs in contrast, roasting deserts in the world's hottest places,or frozen wastelands in its coldest spots, have been ignored.
Even so,the researchers say the results shown here give us a strong, clear marker that we can use to help structure existing and future conservation efforts by preventing disturbance on existing low influenced areas, meanwhile, recovering areas for conservation in land that has already been exploited too much.
"The encouraging takeaway from this study is that if we act quickly and decisively (果斷地),there is a slim window in which we can still conserve roughly half of the Earth's land in a relatively untouched state," says biologist and lead author of the study,Jason Riggio.
       There's a chance,right now,to draw a line in the sand,and say"no more".

(1)Why was the new study carried out?

A.To find out why humans exploit nature.
B.To figure out the land free from human influence.
C.To prove humans are harmful to nature.
D.To clarify the Earth is not occupied by humans completely.
(2)Which places are influenced most by humans?

    A.Woodless lands.
    B.Ice-free lands.
    C.Places with biodiversity.
    D.Places with warmth.
(3)What can we do based on the research?

A.Make use of the unlivable area through different means.
B.Remove the influence on the previous disturbed area.
C.Attempt to have no bad effect on the"untouched" land.
D.Reconstruct the overexploited land with forest and agriculture.
(4)What's the writer's attitude towards the untouched land?

    A.It should be urbanized immediately.
B.It should be covered with plants.
C.It should be free from humans and animals.
D.It should be undisturbed and preserved.

  • 5.World in a dish:The garden path Imagine a plate holding two strawberries, identical in appearance. One came from the supermarket, meaning it was probably harvested when it was still unripe, loaded onto a refrigerated truck and driven hundreds of miles.(1)
The other strawberry was picked from a garden minutes before being eaten.
The first one will probably taste like a slightly soft cucumber, with light berry flavors and strong sour tastes. The second is likely to be sweet and floral;the flavor will stay in the mouth,as the pleasant smell will on the hands.(2)
They are convenient and available in the northern hemisphere(北半球) in February.
    (3)
This attitude misunderstands the ultimate appeal of gardening. It mistakes the product for the purpose. It is true that a garden can produce peas that offer a taste of spring while finding tomatoes in the shops can take some time ,effort and expense.
A garden, especially in the early years, can also produce little but frustration.Beginning gardeners may plant the wrong crops for their soil.Squirrels have an annoying habit of taking single bites of cucumbers ,beans and tomatoes ,then leaving the rest on the vine(藤) to rot.(4)

       No matter.(5)
The deepest pleasure - as with cooking, writing, bringing up children or almost anything worthwhile- is in the work itself. To garden is to patiently, lovingly and diligently help life flourish,in the ground and above it.

A.The real joy of gardening is the time spent doing it.
B.Growing your own vegetables ensures a reliable supply.
C.Well-stocked supermarket shelves are available all week.
D.Some columnists long considered gardening waste of time.
E.However, supermarket strawberries are not entirely without advantages.
F.By the time it reached the plate it may have been off the vine for two weeks.
G.And even expert gardeners can lose a season's harvest to uncooperative weather.

  • 19."Were you Mark's math teacher?" An old man came to my office and asked.I nodded. "Mark talked about you a lot.I want to show you something," he said, taking a wallet out of his pocket. "They found this on him when he was killed in the battle. We thought you might recognize it."
Opening the wallet,he carefully removed two worn pieces of notebook paper that had obviously been taped, folded and refolded many times.I knew without looking that the papers were the ones on which I had listed all the good things each of Mark's classmates had said about him.And that happened 20 years ago.
Mark was in the third grade class I taught. All 34 of my students were dear to me,but Mark was one in a million.Very neat in appearance,he had that happy-to-be-alive attitude that made even his occasional misbehavior delightful.
Mark also talked without stopping.I tried to remind him again and again that talking without permission was unacceptable. What impressed me so much, though, was the.sincere response every time I had to correct him for misbehaving." Thank you for correcting me,Sister!" I didn't know what to make of it at first but before long I became accustomed to hearing it many times a day.
One morning my patience was growing thin when Mark talked once too often.I made a new-teacher's mistake.I looked at Mark and said, "If you say one more word,I am going to tape your mouth shut!"
It wasn't ten seconds later when Chuck shouted, "Mark is talking again." I hadn't asked any of the students to help me watch Mark, but since I had stated the punishment in front of the class,I had to act on it.
I walked to my desk and took out a roll of tape.Very deliberately,I proceeded to Mark's desk, tore off two pieces of the tape and made a big X with them over his mouth.I then returned to the front of the room.As I glanced at Mark to see how he was doing,he winked at me.I started laughing. The entire class cheered as I walked back to Mark's desk, removed the tape and shrugged my shoulders. His first words were, "Thank you for correcting me,Sister."
