  • 2.Being compared to great people like Stephen Hawking and Albert Einstein is not something that happens to the average person. At the age of just 23,Sabrina Gonzalez Pasterski has already achieved much more goals than most of us ever will in our lifetime.
When she was only 14 years old,the Chicago girl made her own single engine airplane—by herself. She then flew it across Lake Michigan, becoming the youngest person to ever fly their own plane.
She graduated from Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy (IMSA) in 2010 and entered Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
At first, she had to wait to be accepted into the school, but once Professors Allen Haggerty and Earll Murman watched her video they had no doubt.Femalista quoted Haggerty as saying:After just three years at MIT she has already achieved the highest possible grade point average of 5.0.
She is now studying further at Harvard University, with full academic freedom.Once again she is only 23 years old.
What's even more impressive is that she is no longer interested in building planes but has turned her attention to physics, namely black holes and how gravity (重力)affects space and time—that is why she is being compared to Einstein and Hawking.
Pasterski records all of her work on her website Physics Girl, but if you are a little shocked by her achievements, she has some words for you.
During an interview with Marie Claire earlier this year she said, "Being optimistic about what you believe you can do.When you're little, you say a lot of things about what you'll do or be when you're older—I think it's important not to forget those dreams."

(1)Why does the author mention Einstein and Hawking at the beginning?

    A.To honour the two scientists.
    B.To compare the two scientists.
C.To bring out the key character.
    D.To introduce their achievements.
(2)What can we infer from Haggerty's words?

A.Pasterski had to wait three months.
    B.He thought highly of Pasterski.
C.He had some doubt about Pasterski.
D.Pasterski had average grades at college.
(3)What is even more impressive about Pasterski?

A.She has full academic freedom at Harvard.
B.She records all of her work on her website.
C.She becomes the youngest person to fly a plane.
D.She is interested in some special fields of physics.
(4)According to Pasterski, which are the important qualities that people need to succeed?

    A.Independence and concentration.
    B.Concentration and optimism.
    C.Optimism and determination.
    D.Friendliness and determination.

  • 3.Body Language in the United States
Most people shake hands and make eye contact when they meet people for the first time.Among very good friends,a woman may give another woman a little hug,and a man may kiss a woman quickly on the cheek.Males don't hug one another, which, however,is changing.Men usually shake hands with the right hand.Sometimes they use the left hand to either cover the handshake or lightly hold the other person's arm. This shows greater warmth and friendship. Most people wave hello or good-bye by extending the palm(手掌) facing outward, and twisting the hand at the wrist(手腕).Another way is to raise the arm, palm outward, and move the whole arm and hand back and forth. This is important to know because in many other countries, the same movements mean "no".
When people are waiting in a public place, such as the post office, they usually form lines. Some people get angry and complain if someone pushes their way into a line or jumps ahead of other people. Moreover, many women like men to open doors for them. They also like men to give up their seats on public transportation. However, some women do not like this type of behavior. They feel that men and women should be treated in the same way.
In the United States,it's important to make direct eye contact in business and social situations. If you don't make eye contact, people will probably think that you are bored or not interested. If there is silence in these situations, people usually try to make conversation.Periods of silence make many people uncomfortable.People in the United States usually stand about one arm's length away from each other while talking or standing together. This space is called "the comfort zone".
In the United States, mothers sometimes show that they are angry with children by shaking an index finger(食指) at them.People may show that they like children by patting them on the head.

(1)It can be inferred from Paragraph 1 that in the United States
    .
A.men begin to hug each other now
B.a(chǎn) man always kisses a woman for greeting
C.people only use left hands to shake hands
D.people wave good-bye as people in many other countries do
(2)Some women don't like to be offered a seat by men because
    .
A.they think sitting is harmful for health
B.they prefer to stand rather than sit
C.they like to be treated equally
    D.they don't need men's favor
(3)The third paragraph is mainly about
    .
    A.body language in public places
    B.impolite body language
    C.the comfort zone
D.body language in business and social life
(4)In the United States,a mother sometimes shakes an index finger at her kids to show
    .
    A.boredom
    B.a(chǎn)nger
    C.love
    D.satisfaction

  • 4.COVID herd immunity (群體免疫) will not happen in 2021 World Health Organization (WHO) chief scientist Soumya Swaminathan said Monday that herd immunity to coronavirus would not be achieved in 2021,despite the growing availability of vaccines(疫苗產(chǎn)量).
Factors that delay herd immunity include limited access to vaccines in developing countries, skepticism(懷疑) over vaccination, and the potential for virus mutations(變異),according to health experts.
A growing number of countries around the world, including the United States, the United Kingdom,Singapore,Germany and other European Union countries, are in the first stages of mass-vaccination campaigns.
Herd immunity occurs when enough people in a population have immunity to an infection(感染)so that it prevents the disease from spreading.
"We are not going to achieve any levels of population immunity or herd immunity in 2021," Swaminathan said, while emphasizing that measures like physical distancing, hand washing and mask wearing continue to be necessary in controlling COVID's spread for the rest of the year.
However,Swaminathan praised the "incredible progress" made by vaccine researchers to develop several safe and effective vaccines at unprecedented (空前的) speed.Countries are currently administering vaccines developed by BioNTech-Pfizer,Oxford University AstraZeneca and Moderna.
"The vaccines are going to come," she said. "They are going to go to all countries, but meanwhile we mustn't forget that there are measures that work," she added, referring to hygiene(衛(wèi)生) and social distancing.
"We won't get back to normal quickly," Dale Fisher, chairman of the WHO's Outbreak Alert and Response Network, told a conference hosted by Reuters news agency. "We know we need to get to herd immunity and we need that in a majority of countries, but we are not going to see that in 2021," Fisher said. "There might be some countries that might achieve it but even then that will not create normal especially in terms of border controls," he added.

(1)Which of the following are not the factors that delay herd immunity?

    A.People are skeptical about vaccination.
B.Access to vaccines in developing countries is limited.
C.A growing number of countries begin mass-vaccination campaigns.
D.Virus mutations are likely to happen.
(2)As for the first stages of mass-vaccination campaigns, which country is not mentioned in the passage?

    A.Vietnam
    B.Germany
    C.Singapore
    D.the United Kingdom
(3)What can we learn from what Fisher said?

A.In many countries in 2021,people will live a normal' life in terms of border controls.
B.If some countries might achieve herd immunity, people will live a "normal" life.
C.In terms of good border controls,we can achieve herd immunity.
D.There maybe a long way to get to herd immunity all over the world.
(4)What is the attitude of Swaminathan to the progress of vaccine development?

    A.positive
    B.negative
    C.critical
    D.neutral
