  • 2.Despite Kyle Tianshi being only a 15-year-old US high schooler,he has published five sci-fi novels. His fifth book Eventide was released in July. However, this may not be his most impressive achievement as Kyle just received the"Hero Award",a ﹩20,000 grand prize. It is the top honor in the California Youth Sustainability Awards. The competition aims to encourage and support young community leaders who are making a difference for sustainability in their communities by taking action for the planet.
Kyle,a sophomore from the Cambridge School in the US,received the honor for his portable invention called NEREID.The device can detect microscopic particles(粒子)in water by using a 1 aser and microscope. These particles can be harmful to people and the environment.
Kyle came up with the idea for the invention based on his experience growing up in San Diego,California,US.People had no access to unpolluted drinking water and his parents asked him not to drink tap water.Kyle spent about ﹩60 buying the tools needed to analyze the tap water:a 1 aser,a microscope and a micro-computer."It's incredibly powerful for the price,"Kyle said. Then he used their family's garage as his laboratory, doing research on the pollution of drinking water caused by micro-plastics.
Kyle hopes to bring to market a low-cost alternative tool for detecting micro-plastic pollution levels in drinking water. In this way,he can offer help to people who don't have access to water filtration(過(guò)濾) systems. He has applied for a patent.
Kyle said his sister Emily,a freshman at Stanford University, inspired his interest in environmental research. She was recognized nationally for developing a water collection device. They have founded the Clearwater Innovation program to advocate for clean water through social media platforms and organize community cleanup events.

  • 3."Human activity has wiped out two-thirds of the world's wildlife since 1970," CNN reported on September 10,2020.Later that month, the Guardian reported that "40 percent of the worlds plant species are at risk of extinction".Stanford biologist Paul Ehrlich and his colleagues argued that "the ongoing sixth mass extinction may be the most serious environmental threat to the persistence of civilization".Around the same time, the Daily Mail warned that "human civilization stands a 90 percent chance of collapse (崩潰)within decades due to deforestation".
These horrible calculations and projections come from authoritative-sounding reports issued by international agencies, conservation groups, and peer-reviewed scientific journals. But is the future of wild nature and human civilization really so poor?
Data from uncontroversial mainstream sources strongly indicate that both humanity and the natural world are likely to be flourishing (繁榮)rather than collapsing at the end of this century.Humanity is becoming an urban species, and that's good for the environment, since urban dwellers (居民)generally use less electricity, produce less globe-warming carbon dioxide, and have smaller land footprints than people living in the countryside.By 2100,it is estimated that 85 percent of people will be city dwellers, which would leave only 1.2 billion still living in the countryside. That means more space for the wildlife and less pollution from the agriculture.
The global tree-covering area increased by 865,000 square miles between 1982 and 2016.The researchers found that gains in forest area in the mild, subtropical and northern climatic zones are offsetting (抵消)declines in the tropics. The Maryland researchers owe much of that increase to "natural afforestation on abandoned agricultural land". "Furthermore, forests in mountainous regions are expanding as climate warming enables trees to grow at higher altitudes, they added.
Humanity does face big environmental challenges in the coming century. But the scientific and economic evidence shows that most of the trends are positive or can be turned in positive direction by human wisdom.Rather than an age of extinction, the 21st century promises to be an era of environmental renewal.

(1)Why does the author mention the reports in Paragraph 1?

    A.To give examples.
    B.To introduce the topic.
    C.To make a contrast.
    D.To support his opinion.
(2)What will happen according to Paragraph 3?

A.No one will choose to live in the countryside.
B.More space will be available for the wildlife.
C.Neither humanity nor the natural world will develop quickly.
D.Urban residents will do more walking than those in the countryside.
(3)Which of the following statements will the researchers agree with about forest area?

A.The expanding and disappearance in forest area aren't evenly matched.
B.The forest area in the mild, tropic and northern zones is increasing.
C.There are more forests in mountainous regions due to the climate warming.
D.The plan of "natural afforestation on abandoned agricultural land" is unfavorable.
(4)What might be the best title of the passage?

    A.The Bright Future of Humanity.
B.The Challenges in the Coming Century.
    C.Better Environment,Better Future of Human.
D.21st Century:An Era of Environmental Renewal.

The Nunes's family lived in a friendly community near the woods. It was a normal Wednesday afternoon Mom Araceli Nunes returned home from selling food and drinks along the roadside in Plantersville,Texas. Her business had been fairly profitable and she was happy to see her husband preparing dinner in the kitchen and her 3-year-old son,Christopher Ramirez, playing in the yard. However, when she turned to unload her car,she didn't notice the kid followed a neighbor's dog into the woods.
When they couldn't find Christopher, the panicky family called for help, and within a few hours,48 different agencies arrived to comb through the area around their home.Their entire community started to help find Christopher. Some walked into the forest and others drove farther away.
After days with no sign of the kid, rescuers feared the worst, but Araceli never stopped hoping for her son's safe return. At long last, after four long days and nights, the sheriff received a phone call from a man named Tim Halfin.
Tim Halfin's house was about three miles away.He had heard of the missing boy when he returned home from a business trip.He didn't think a three-year-old could walk that far to where he lived. However,as all the previous searching efforts were in vain,he decided to try his luck around his own house.
Not long after he went out into the woods,he was surprised by what came into his sight. There was Christopher!Aside from being dehydrated and very hungry, the kid was completely unharmed. He was found outside the range where authorities were looking for him,so it's pretty amazing that Tim discovered him.
