2.When I began planning to move to Auckland to study,my mother was a little worried about the uncertainty of living in a place that was so different from India, where we lived. She worried particularly about the lack of jobs, the cultural differences and the chance that I would face racism.
Despite these worries,I came to New Zealand in July 2009.I have found the place and people very nice and supportive.Soon after I arrived,I realized the importance of getting a job to supply my living expenses.
Determined to do this on my own,I spent a whole day going from door to door asking for a job. However,I received little or no response. This became my routine every day after college for a few weeks.
One afternoon,I walked into a building to ask if there were any job opportunities.People there were very surprised, and advised me not to continue my job search in that manner. As I was about to leave,a clerk in the building, who had been listening to what the others had said, approached me and asked if I would wait outside.Fifteen minutes later,he returned. He asked me what my plans were and encouraged me to stay confident. He then offered to take me to the Royal Oak area to search for a job.
I was a little surprised, but had a good feeling about him,so I went jye.ai.Along the way,I realized that I had run out of copies of my resume (簡(jiǎn)歷).The man stopped at his business partner's office to make me 15 extra copies. He also gave me tips on dressing and speaking, and added that I should give him a call if I ever needed anything.I handed out my resumes and went home feeling very satisfied. The following day,I received a call from a store in Royal Oak offering me a job.
It seems that the world always gives back to you when you need it.And this time,it was a complete stranger who turned out to be a real blessing.

3.Most of the 20th century has been a development on the Industrial Revolution taken to an extreme(極端):people now own more products than ever before;there are enough nuclear weapons to destroy the earth several times over;there is hardly any forest left and pollution has got to the point where we buy water.Within a few years I predict you will be able to buy air—there once was a time when you didn't need to buy food or shelter either.
Important developments in the last century are the breaking down of the class structures left over from the Industrial Revolution stage, bringing with it the empowerment(授權(quán))of the "common man":the working day is set by law to only 8 hours a day;everyone has the vote;the media has less obvious government control;people have landed on the moon, sent spacecraft to Mars and so on.Families have also been shrinking;the nuclear family came about, and especially in the last half of the 20th century,one-parent families are becoming more common. The smaller size of the family shows the increased independence of people—once upon a time people had to live in large groups to survive.
Humans have realized their personality and independence and taken their control of the world to an extreme. In many countries the land is almost completely used in the production of food and as living space.People live in small cities which are entirely human constructed ,made from materials which are also entirely human constructed(concrete bricks)with hardly any remains of nature.Weeds are poisoned because they are messy;even parks have trees grown in tidy lines;grass is mowed to keep it short and soon.I think the massive drug "problem" troubling people is a result of too much of this influence, humans needing to escape the dull world they have created by entering fantasy worlds.
Over the last 100 years, the 20th century consciousness has spread throughout the world. Most of Asia has been thoroughly "Westernized",and most of the Third World is being over-run by Western ways of doing things and living.

4.You accidentally step into quicksand(流沙).You begin to sink. Can you drown?Quicksand is sand with so much water between its particles (顆粒) that is soupy.Quicksand can no longer support weight. So does this mean one can drown in quicksand?
The truth is that it is very rare to drown in quicksand. This is because of two things. The first reason is that most quicksand pools are not deep.Usually,a person will sink only a few inches before hitting solid ground. If it is a deep pool,an adult will usually hit solid ground after sinking only to his or her waist.Deeper pools are rare, but even then, there is a reason why people are not swallowed(吞沒)up after accidentally stepping into quicksand.
The reason is that quicksand is dense(稠密).When something is dense, its particles are crowded close together.Quicksand is denser than the human body. This means that humans will naturally float in quicksand! The upward push of quicksand is greater than the downward push of the human body.
Usually you will sink to your chest before you begin to float.Your lungs, acting like giant balloons, help you float. You will only sink further if you are loaded down, perhaps with a heavy pack.Take off your pack, and you cannot drown. You cannot be swallowed.
One man escaped from quicksand after he sank up to his chest. How did he do it?He swam.People can swim in quicksand if they move slowly enough. The man slowly made swimming motions with his arms and legs.He swam slowly and carefully for an hour.He did not stop making the swimming motions once. Finally,he reached the edge of the quicksand pool.He did not drown. He climbed out unharmed.

C.Only fat people can be trapped in quicksand.
D.People won't be swallowed up even in deep quicksand pools.
(3)Why do people float in quicksand?
A.Quicksand pools are usually not deep.
B.Quicksand can support heavy weight.
C.Quicksand is denser than the human body.
D.The downward push of quicksand is greater.

A.quicksand pools.
