The mothers' Weekend Workshop, coordinated by Disability Services Queensland's Mount Gravatt Family and Early Childhood Services team, was held at Binna Burra in the Gold Coast hinterland.
Disability Services Queensland speech pathologist Jenny Henley says the weekend, attended by nine women, was a highly positive and rewarding experience for all involved.
"Parents and carers of children with a disability often have to deal with stressful and difficult situations," she says."They seldom have the opportunity to take a break from the daily pressures of everyday life."
"This workshop was designed to give them some well-earned respite(暫時的休息) in a supportive and stress-free environment.

Following the weekend retreat (靜修),most participants, their partners and children met again socially, eager to continue and develop their new support network.

  • 3.Hamburgers,F(xiàn)rench fries, potato chips, popcorn, and pizza. There is no denying these foods are tasty. But often,it's the added salt that makes them so appealing. One result:U.S.jye.ai are eating too much salty fare.
Table salt is about 40% sodium(鈉).Our bodies need some sodium to work properly. But too much of it is not healthy.
A recent study by the Centers for Disease Control(CDC)looked at the eating habits of 2,142 children between the ages of 6 and 18.It found that their average sodium intake was 3,256 milligrams per day. That equals nearly 1.5 teaspoons each day, which is 50% more than current guidelines recommend.
Zerleen Quader is the study's lead author. "Eating too much sodium now can set kids up for health problems later," she said.
Much of the sodium that kids eat comes from processed foods. But potato chips and other salty snacks aren't the only culprits. There are other sodium sources - like bread and cold cuts - adding to the salt overload.
All this added salt can raise blood pressure and, with it,the risk of a heart attack and other health problems.Today,1 in 9 children has raised blood pressure. There's good news though.Lowering salt intake can lower blood pressure.
That,of course,is easier said than done. The more salty foods you eat,the more you develop a taste for jye.aim.The key to changing your diet is to start small. "Small changes in sodium in foods are not usually noticed," Quader says.Eventually, she adds, the effort will reset a kid's taste buds(味蕾)so the salt desires stop.
Need a little inspiration?Dietitian Bridget Murphy advises focusing on the immediate effects of a diet that is high in sodium.High blood pressure can make it difficult to be active. "Do you want to be able to think clearly and perform well in school?" she asks. "If you're an athlete,do you want to run faster?" If you answered yes to these questions, then it's time to shake the salt habit.

(1)What did the recent CDC study find?

A.The present advised salt intake is too high.
    B.Teenagers have good dietary habits.
C.American kids have too much salt.
D.Proper sodium intake benefits human health.
(2)Which of the following is closest in meaning to the underlined word "culprits" in Paragraph 5?

    A.Criminals.
    B.Results.
    C.Types.
    D.Surprises.
(3)What is Quader's advice for kids?

    A.Eat salt-free foods.
    B.Have a low-sodium diet.
    C.Keep away from junk food.
    D.Take enough exercise regularly.
(4)According to Murphy,a salty diet will probably
    .
A.help you have a quick mind
    B.increase your running speed
    C.make you relatively inactive
    D.keep you hungry but spirited

  • 4.For all those who agree with Neil Gaiman's motto in American Gods that "a town isn't a town without a bookstore," what might be the perfect holiday choice has just been listed on Airbnb:the chance to become a bookseller for a week or two.
For the total cost of £150 a week, guests at The Open Book in Wigtown,Scotland's national book town, will be expected to sell books for 40 hours a week while living in the flat above the shop.Given training in bookselling from Wigtown's community of booksellers, they will also have the chance to put their "own stamp" on the store while they're there. "The Open Book's aim is to celebrate bookshops, encourage education in running independent bookshops and welcome people around the world to Scotland's national book town," says the Airbnb listing.
The Open Book is leased(出租)by the Wigtown Book Festival from a local family.Organisers have been letting paying volunteers run the shop for a week or two at a time, and opened the experience up to the world at large.
"I wouldn't call it a working holiday," said Adrian Turpin, director of the Wigtown Book Festival. "It's not about cheap labour(體力勞動) - it's about offering people an experience." The money is "just necessary to cover our costs," said Turpin, admitting that "it can be a hard life, selling books in a small town,so it's not a holiday for everybody."
"I think the shop would have closed, without this," he said. "So part of the idea was to get new people in people who would hopefully end up having a good time and a long-standing relationship with the town."
The idea comes at a difficult moment for independent booksellers. In 2005,there were 1,535 independent bookshops in the UK,with the number dropping to 939 by 2014.
So far,The Open Book has been leased around 10 times, with guests including those from The Bookshop Band,a librarian from Portland,a Dutch government employee, and an 80-year-old couple.

  • 19.Mai Lin wasn't doing well enough at school,or at least she wasn't satisfied with herself. She wished she could do better.
"Let's review the material we learned in the last unit," the history teacher said. "Who can tell us what caused the War of 1812?" Mai Lin sat at her desk, staring ahead. She hoped the teacher wouldn't call her name. They hadn't studied the War of 1812 at her old school and she didn't know the answer.
"Alison?" the teacher asked instead.Oh,perfect,Mai Lin thought.Of course Alison would have the answer. She seemed to have all the answers.Alison was the most popular girl in school - always surrounded by millions of boyfriends, best friends, and others. She was like a brilliant sun.
Mai Lin hadn't made one or two friends of her own so far.Her old school was small and low-key,but a shy person like Mai Lin had a chance there. This new school, however, seemed as big as an airport to Mai Lin,and it seemed very hard to get around in it.She still got lost sometimes in the school.
Mai Lin frowned(皺眉)as Alison answered the teacher's question.Alison probably never got lost,Mai Lin thought to herself. You could probably put Alison down in the middle of a desert, and within five minutes she'd be able to tell you the best way to get home.
History class finally ended, and Mai Lin headed for the gym.The class had been playing basketball.Alison, who was as tall and thin and attractive as a tree, was very good at it.Beside her,Mai Lin felt like a very small and foolish ant.Today, however, the gym teacher pointed to a thick rope hanging from the ceiling and said, "Everybody! You're going to climb this rope today."
