  • 4.Craig Blackburn,a father and car fan, built a Batmobile for his son's hope for using the vehicle to brighten the lives of sick children. And now he hopes to use it for more than just his son's hope after seeing the children's reaction to the Batmobile.
Based on the number of failures he had seen in car groups,he estimated that only about one in 50 attempted constructions was actually finished and he realized what an incredible opportunity he had.
Mr.Blackburn started the project at the beginning of 2018 after hearing a friend in the US was doing the same thing. It started with importing an outer shell overseas, before picking brains of a friend who had a background as a worker in a car factory to gain knowledge of how to build the car. With the help of his friend,Mr.Blackburn built the Batmobile in 18 months with the cost reaching six figures.
Mr.Blackburn hoped to add a flamethrower onto the back of the vehicle and said he had thought about building the more recent Batman Tumbler from the series film Dark Knight.Though Mr.Blackburn encountered plenty of difficulties to get over during the construction,in September 2019,the car made its first show at the Carnival of Flowers in Toowoomba, before being used by Blackburn's son for his hope.
"It was great. It was so good to see the kids' and adults' excitement at seeing the Batmobile." Mr.Blackburn said.As a result, the car lovers hope to make the car work on the roads as soon as possible,so he can visit sick children and take them out with his son.

(1)What is Craig Blackburn's initial purpose of constructing the Batmobile?

    A.To realise his son's dream.
B.To donate it to sick children.
C.To pay his respects to the film Dark Knight.
D.To show off at the Carnival of Flowers in Toowoomba.
(2)How did Blackburn's friend help him?

A.By making an outer shell for him.
    B.By offering him financial support.
C.By sharing the knowledge of building cars.
D.By telling him the background of the car factory.
(3)What is the car lovers' expectation of the Batmobile?

A.It will be put to practical use soon.
B.It can be displayed around the world.
C.It can change the lives of sick children.
D.It will appear in the next film about Batman.

  • 5.A lot of us lose life's tough battles by starting a frontal attack - when a touch of humor might well enable us to win.Consider the case of a young friend of mine who was trapped in a traffic jam on his way to work shortly after receiving a warning about being late for the job.Although there was a good reason for Sam's a being late - serious illness at home - he decided that this by now-familiar excuse wouldn't work any longer. His boss was probably already pacing up and down preparing a dismissal speech.
Yes the boss was.Sam entered the office at 9:35.The place was as quiet as a locker room (更衣室);everyone was hard at work.Sam's boss came up to him.Suddenly Sam smiled and stretched out his hand. "How do you do!" he said. "I'm Sam Maynard.I'm applying for a job which I understand became available just 35
minutes ago.Does the early bird get the worm?"
The room exploded in laughter. However, the boss clamped off a smile and walked back to his office.Sam Maynard had saved his job - with the only tool that could win a laugh.
Humor is a most effective yet frequently neglected means of handling the difficult situations in our lives. It can be used for patching up differences, apologizing, saying "no",criticizing, getting the other fellow to do what you want without his losing face.
For some jobs it's the only tool that can succeed. It is a way to discuss subjects so sensitive that serious dialogue may start a quarrel. For example, many believe that comedians on television are doing more today for racial and religious tolerance than people in any other field.

(1)Why was Sam late for his job?

    A.He was ill.B
    B.He got up late.
C.He was busy applying for a new job.
D.He was caught in a traffic jam.
(2)What does the underlined phrase "clamped off " in paragraph 3 probably mean?

    A.Burst into.
    B.Gave out.
    C.Tried to hold back.
    D.Tried to set up.
(3)What can we infer from the last paragraph?

A.Humor is embarrassing in difficult situations.
B.Comedians may use humor to avoid a quarrel.
C.All people lose faces without a sense of humor.
D.Humor is the most effective way of solving problems.

  • 6.An online supermarket company-Ocado in the UK,has recently displayed a robotic hand that can pick fruits and vegetables!
When an embryo is in the womb (子宮),the very first sense it develops is touch.
The sense of touch is also the one that lasts the longest—as we get older and our vision and hearing begins to weaken, touch still remains.Humans use their touch to protect themselves,to create emotional relationships with other people and to experience pleasure. Can you imagine life without it?
The sense of touch comes from a net work of nerve endings (神經(jīng)末梢) and special touch receptors on the surface of the skin. While there are different kinds of touch receptors, they help us judge pressure, texture and vibrations (震動(dòng)).They are located in our fingertips, palms, soles of our feet, face, lips and tongue.
When we touch something, the mechano-receptors feel the touch and through a network of nerves send signals to the brain. This informs the brain about the location of the touch, the amount of force used, and the speed at which it was used.
Several different techniques have been tried in the past few years to create such a robotic hand—using three fingers. But this latest design by Soma copies the human hand. The gripper (鉗子) is made up of flexible materials which grasp the thing based on its size and shape. Then air pressure is used to control the movement of the robotic fingers to pick objects safely and without causing damage.
The next step would be for the robot to judge how ripe the fruits and vegetables are,and apply pressure accordingly.Members of the research team are currently working on adding computerized vision to the robots,so that they can see what they are grasping.
Does all this mean robots can replace people?According to Ocado,it helps improve productivity by removing some of the repetitive tasks done by humans.

(1)What is focused on in the second paragraph?

    A.The origin of touch.
    B.The importance of touch.
    C.The development of touch.
    D.The process of transporting touch.
(2)What does the underlined word "it" in Paragraph 4 refer to?

    A.The brain.
    B.The touch.
    C.The nerve.
    D.The signal.
(3)What is the typical feature of the latest robots?

A.They can see what they're taking hold of.
B.They can take the place of people in work places.
C.They can tell whether the fruits and vegetables are ripe.
D.They can hold things firmly according to their outer features.
(4)What can be a suitable title for the text?

A.A Sense of Touch for Robots.
B.A Robotic Hand for Classifying Fruits.
C.A Robotic Hand with a Gentle Touch.
D.A Robot Made of Flexible Materials.

  • 8.Some people may mistake college as a simple step above high school, but an examination of the two levels of study reveals that there are indeed numerous differences between the two.
One of the differences is the nature of classes in college and in high school. In high school classes, tasks and learning materials that are to be used to complete the tasks are provided for the students.(1)

In college, the situation is very different because it is the students who are charged with the responsibility to decide the kinds of classes that they should take until they graduate.(2)
If a student has challenges in selecting a unit, the student may make an appointment with a professor.Even so,college students are rarely given the materials that they need for their study and therefore, unlike high school, they must purchase the necessary texts and other learning materials by themselves.
       (3)
For instance, high school teachers tend to be more interested in knowing the name of every student in their class while college professors rarely relate names to the faces of their students. Also, high school teachers are more likely to closely monitor the grades of their students. They will find out why a student may have missed a class. They even remind the students of assignments and future examinations.
       (4)
They do not make any effort to ensure that all their students pass or score good grades in their subjects. If a student misses a class,a college professor is unlikely to follow up and give the student the notes he missed.
Finally,it is not uncommon not to be recognized by a college professor after graduating from college, unlike the case of high school teachers who remember some students long after graduation. (5)
In college, one has to book an appointment in order to have a one-on-one time with a professor.

A.College professors do not contact students a lot after class.
B.Colleges do have guidance offices to help students plan accordingly.
C.Another difference is that high school teachers are closer to students.
D.On the other hand college professors rarely care the attendance habits.
E.It is easy for high school students to get one-on-one time with a teacher.
F.High school teachers pay more attention to their students' learning habits.
G.In high schools, students also have counselors to help determine courses.
